Sorry if this has already been covered. I am really interested in Elite Dangerous. As I wait until my Rift arrives (cough...August...cough), I would like to learn the game and get the hang of the HOTAS controls.
How can I buy the game, play on my desktop and then be able to continue in VR once the Rift arrives? If I buy through Oculus Home, will it let me play without a Rift hooked up? Should I buy through Steam and then get a key for Oculus Home?
Being a noob about this, I'm afraid I'll do something dumb like buying a non-VR version and then be forced to purchase the game again to play in VR.

So - ED and DCS are the HOTAS VR experiences.......
I have a DK2 and bought ED - was completely blown away.
Had a pretty crap joystick and really struggled with the buttons - and kept having to remove my DK2 to look at the keyboard - awful!!
Bought Voice Attack and that sorted those problems out - trouble is, I just encountered another one, as my Mrs would take the pi55 as I sat there with a Rift on and barking out "Landing Gear" and "Warp Drive"!
As the joystick was really bad, I bought an X55 HOTAS and mapped the buttons in the game. I did not use the X 55 profiler. Once I learnt where the switches and buttons were and what did what, I stopped using voice attack and now fly without any problems and the muscle memory means I can do anything I want without taking my hands off the HOTAS or removing the Rift.......apart from the Galaxy map. But I use a mini KB with a mousepad for that....
You have a really good opportunity to do things in the right order.....
1) Buy ED (Horizons if you can afford it) 2) Buy a HOTAS - I own a Saitek X55 and love it. 3) Learn to fly the ships in ED and map the buttons on the HOTAS - in no time at all, you will be flying without taking your eyes off the screen.... 4) Plug your CV1 in when you get it and load up ED - and prepare to be blown away........
Fly safe Nosh
PS - In DCS, knowing how to program the X55 with the profiler is a MUST - and excellent when done properly....
