Question about playing Elite Dangerous before Rift arrives

Sorry if this has already been covered.  I am really interested in Elite Dangerous.  As I wait until my Rift arrives (cough...August...cough), I would like to learn the game and get the hang of the HOTAS controls.

How can I buy the game, play on my desktop and then be able to continue in VR once the Rift arrives?  If I buy through Oculus Home, will it let me play without a Rift hooked up?  Should I buy through Steam and then get a key for Oculus Home?

Being a noob about this, I'm afraid I'll do something dumb like buying a non-VR version and then be forced to purchase the game again to play in VR.

Can anyone provide some advice?

Thanks.

All versions play in the rift steam, oculus or direct from frontier

No problem playing on a screen then going to vr.

You are in for a vr treat. In 18 months of dk2 ownership ED was the jewel for me.
The game itself  I also love but it is an acquired taste do some YouTube research

Having a hotas is half the battle espif it is a decent one with a few buttons.  With the right hotas voice attack is not really needed but at 6 quid or so it is worth it just for the cool factor.....if you get voice attack search for KICS4

There are loads of voice attack profiles for the game which are paid as well

Thanks!  So buying through Oculus Home will let me play on my monitor until my Rift arrives?  I had heard that Oculus does a device check and if you didn't have an HMD, it wouldn't let you launch the game.  Is that true?

Ahhcnever thought of that.

I tell you what I will install it now for you. May take a few hrs tho so will keep an eye out here in case someone else answers

Edit installing now on oculus home. I have all oculus software installed but not picking up my hmd till Tuesday.

If you really can't wait just buy direct from frontier ( still get full rift support and frontier get the full cut of the money) of course it wont be in your rift library then, but it will support the vive as well which I do not think the oculus build does unless they fixed that.

Frontier were giving away oculus keys to all users but they may not be doing that with new purchases.

@Gherron ok sorry for the delay. I can confirm ED works fine in desktop mode without having a rift, RMB on the game icon and select load from desktop.  of all my other games and apps on the store, the only other one I have which can do this is blazerush.

I will uninstall for now, as my main version is on my SSD and until oculus update their software I cant select different drives for games.

Can y'all confirm that the STEAM version works in the Oculus?  I recently got a STEAM gift card and was going to buy the Horizons expansion, but don't want to waste the money if I'll just have to rebuy it all again when my Rift shows.

Yep all work the only one you MAY have trouble with is using the vive on the oculus version but even that MAY be fixed now (frontier mentioned it but it sounded like a temporary issue)
TBH from what I can tell no matter the version you have all the link does , be it from oculus , steam or frontier directly is open up the frontier launcher which is then the same for all versions. You still have to log in and hit play anyway so it's not really an oculus version as such.
(My CV 1 has not arrived yet so it is possible the launcher reacts differently if the rift is detected but it was not like that with my dk2 a few months back)
