Space Station View

:!: UPDATE: I am creating a second spacecraft diorama! Please visit http://rift-vr.com/blog/ for details. :!:

*[PROGRESS CANCELLED]*
I had planned to update this to allow for watching movies on the computer screen, but I couldn't get the code to work and my trial ran out.

I plan to move to UE4 in the upcoming weeks and possibly remake this in an engine that isn't so....challenged.

Anyway, this is an environmental demo. There is no movement, and you are fixed in a chair. Ever since falling in love with sci fi, I've been trying to digitally create their atmosphere. I've always thought the isolation of space and the cramped dwellings of these sci fi classics to be exceptionally cozy, and since I've gotten the Rift, I realized this would be a great way to make them a bit more real.

This is a thrown-together version of those environments. It's a single room that has a window looking out into part of what's imaginably a gigantic space station. You are fixed in a chair in front of some computer equipment, and are surrounded by mismatched personal belongings and equipment. I've thrown in a lot of great sound effects from freesound.org to add to the atmosphere as well.

Here is a video that AntoineR was courteous enough to record!

Let me know what you think! I hope it's as relaxing as I find it. Great ambiance to listen to some music with.

NOTE - If you find the FPS dropping when you look straight out the window, trying playing at a lower graphical setting and run it at 1280x800 rather than 1080.

NOTE - Please experience this with decent-quality headphones!

(Darker, real time shadows, so-so performance)

was very nice demo. loved the lighting and the radar outside the ship. was nice to sit there and enjoy pretending I was in some scifi movie (so can't wait for these type of games).

couple of things though.

- The scale of some of the objects was about 1.5 times larger than I see them in real life.

- (this is the first time this has happened to me) my eyes started aching after about 3-4 mins sitting there, and I had to exit. I have no idea why I'm fine sitting in the "blocked in" demo for ages and the other's I've tried.

just though I'd mention those things.

No love for 32bit Win users? Would love to try this 🙂

..so would Linux users 😉

I don't understand why people still choose to use a 32bit OS in this day and age.

That was nice : )

Could I throw 0.50c for an idea?

Have a few keys on the keyboard make that screen in front of you do various things (check shields/ammo/staff etc)..

Didn't think I would enjoy that but I spent ages just looking around, good job 😄

As mentioned, the scale is off here and there (for example, the big xbox controller), but overall it was a nice demo! A good first demo in Unity. 🙂

Thanks for the responses guys.

Unfortunately I don't have the experience quite yet to do any programming or triggers - this was just a first test where I wanted to make a relatively static environment alone....besides the basic animations of the space craft and the satellite dish I guess.

Exactly what I was going for 🙂

Good point! I was focusing on getting it all done and over with that some scales were off. It's pretty tedious stuff doing Build & Run over and over and taking off my glasses and putting the Rift on and seeing if things 'look' right, so I did miss a few. Please see below about the scale -

I'm sorry that's happening! I'm not sure what might cause it though. The IPD is default I'm pretty sure. It might have to do with bad ghosting or fps issues when looking outside? Try running it (if still interested) at minimal settings/resolution and see if the same thing occurs.

Thanks for checking it out! As I mentioned above though, and despite programming and game creation experience, I don't have the time at the moment to learn how to do these things as I am very new to Unity, but maybe in the future!

I am currently having Unity spit out a Windows x86 version and a Linux version. In it I also scaled down a few items that did look a bit big. I'll upload them and throw them on here when that's done! Mega takes a while to upload for me though.

The 32 bit Windows and Linux versions were generated without real time shadows and I found I suddenly got 60fps and didn't see ghosting/choppiness issues anymore. These might be better alternatives if people still wanted to check this out but had eye problems. I'll put the links up when they're done uploading.

Hello!
Really nice Demo!

I love these little "Games" where you don't have to do anything besides sitting there and looking around. They just really show what the Rift is made for, Immersion. Just sitting there and convincing yourself that you really ARE there. And this Demo is one of the best I have seen so far.

I think what personally great for me was, is the Desk with the monitor in front of me because that's just how my Desk looks right now 😄

I can't wait until someone does something like this with a monitor that plays a Twitch Stream or YouTube Video or somethinkg like that. That would really be a reason to just sit in the Demo for a while.

Thanks for the response!

While building it I had the exact same idea, but I'm oblivious about how to program that. I think it would be cool to have someone with a bigger brain than mine program (if it's even a possibility) a downloadable Unity prefab with some parameters that allows a side of the cube to become a render target for an internet browser or even for youtube videos. Obviously the screen would have to be closer to your face. I even thought about finding a way to allow the user to throw music files into a folder. They would then play out of the little radio on your right that plays the intro synth music.

Basically I just want to nerd out in immersive environments. To have something distracting within them so that they become more real. This is why the "Alone" horror demo is so great.
