Star Wars: Squadrons (Impressions)

As of now, I've spent over 3 hours in SW:S, and I'm really enjoying the heck out of this flight shooter!

I won't be attempting a comprehensive review (yet) since I haven't finished the full single story campaign, but I do want to call out some great first impressions.

In particular, the character models and realism is rather amazing and rare in VR. Some of the character models are convincingly realistic.

Experiencing VR's "presence" with these characters is quite the special treat. I go out of my way to engage in one-on-one dialogue with each character (as available).

Now, if I had a complaint, it would be that there is no free-form movement. Everything is fixed in place, with Teleportation to predetermined areas. Very much on par with Wilson's Heart (another personal VR favorite). However, there are multiple areas that open up for exploration, and there are quite a few times where I truly felt like I was in a Star Wars universe (or on the set of a Star Wars film).

Note that all of these images are coming straight from my machine, and I'm playing this on the classic Rift CV1, with a mere GTX 980.

One of my favorite aspects of this game are the nuances. I love how they load an R2 unit in to the back of your ship. And this droid is very vocal and animated. You can turn your head behind you any time to see the droid being fully animated.

Other minor details include the use of the Holo-comm inside the ship; where your Commander can pop in to give you orders in classic Star Wars fashion.

As for the flight combat itself,

I would simply compare this more directly with Eve Valkyrie. It has a strong "flight arcade shooter" feel to it; with a heavy emphasize on arcade-style. But once you get the hang of the controls, taking out enemy fighters, blasting turrets off huge ships, dodging missiles, and taking on larger than life vessels feels like this title is well worth the price of admission.

Might have to redo one level, sitting there trying to play a level while constantly checking fpsVR and changing settings kinda heavily reduce focus and immersion 😄

Did complete the level though  o:)

What is the consensus on which version is best for Oculus users? Steam, Epic or Origin?

Origin supports native Oculus drivers, Steam does not.

Epic works through Origin - some said that they had trouble toggling VR in the Epic version, but for some it works fine.

Steam VR vs Origin compared (Oculus)

First let me preface I am aware of the 60hz bug the game has. Because of this, I am seeing that people that bought the game on Origin seem to think that they too are having the poor performance and "stuttering" as people complaining using an Oculus headset on Steam VR, this is simply not the case, they are different issues.

So I decided to also purchase the game on Origin to compare performance with Steam VR on my Oculus CV1 as I was getting terrible performance with Steam VR. Tons of stuttering when turning my head and sub 45 FPS on Medium VR Settings.

Performance through Origin (Oculus SDK) is considerably better vs Steam VR. The weird blurry 60hz issue is still there, looks bad, and is still a major problem, but now I am getting a solid 90 in the same scene at Medium VR. I am completely stutter free when quickly moving my head around unlike on Steam VR. Even when it does drop to 45 in intense scenes the transition is seamless and no stuttering. (monitoring performance with Oculus Tray Tool while playing)

Needless to say this is very unfortunate as I was super happy to learn EA games were returning to Steam. Now I have to refund my steam version and stick with stupid Origin, at least until I get an Index or Reverb G2 😞

I bought Steam version and play for 7 hours then read in discussion that Origin is better for Oculus Head set. I bought Origin one and yes its a lot far better than Steam. Auto setting detect my hardware for VR as ultra. Overall graphic are a lot better smoother. By the way my Steam refund request was rejected for that 7 hours play, understandable. Plus start new game on Origin even though with the same EA id, I lost all my progression and upgrades. But its a lot better.

My gears are Quest (1) with official link cable i7 gen 9, rtx 2060, ram 40gb, ssd 512gb and Thrustmaster Hotas x, xbox one wireless gamepad for some sessions.

Ps, I sub Origin Play Pro to get Squadrons and lot of good games I didn't play yet.

Steam auto sets the super-sampling, Origin version does not and so it looks blurrier by default. You need to download Oculus tray tools and set super-sampling to 1.0 to get the base 100% rendering resolution (note OTT is quadratic, see: https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimvr/comments/8afsmm/psa_super_sampling_values_in_steamvr_are_not/). And be careful because the Steam and OTT values are CUMULATIVE.. so you want to set the steam value to 100%/1.0 if using OTT, or vice-versa ~

Managed to get a refund on my Steam version after 3.1 hours of play time and have now switched to Origin. Better performance. I absolutely DESPISE SteamVR. I'm sure Valve fuck things up for Oculus headset owners on purpose!!!

Also played and completed the first proper Rebel mission whilst having a hypo last night and only died twice. Did a blood test after I'd finished playing (because I was about to go to bed) and saw that my sugar levels were 2.1 mmol/L. I thought my flying was a bit off 😄 😄 😄

Basically anything between 3.9 and 3.0 is a reasonable hypo, 2.9 to 2.0 is a bad one, 1.9 to 1.0 is VERY bad and lower than 1.0 is SERIOUS. 0.0 is a corpse 😄

Worst I've ever had was 0.1, and that was after I had the good sense to collapse in front of a Red Cross Shop and had my life saved by a policeman shovelling sugar and water down my throat. 😮

Thanks for the feedback folks. Looks like Origin is the one to get

I spend way too much time in the training section flying through holes in the debris like a hotshot Rebel pilot. I also like spawning a rebel ship and trying to shoot the turrets. I can do that forever it's so much fun.

I can get 90fps but it's still not smooth possibly because of the fps cap issue. But I suggest choose the low presets in VR cranking up the supersampling and taa then adjusting up the other options.

I'm using the Index. I lent my Rift S to my brother otherwise I would buy on Origin and play it on the Rift S.

Anyway, still having a blast with this game. I haven't even touched the multiplayer. I'm just not good enough yet.

Ah! Glad I'm not the only one.

I make missions drag out extra long because I spend all my time on the Turrets instead of completing the objective. lol

Now i have finished campaign on pilot difficulty and also done some pvp. I really enjoyed this game. I am actually still enjoying, because im gonna keep up playing pvp and i try to get all medals on campaign.

There are few things missing in this game for my liking.
- Custom scenarios. I want to make my own battles ship by ship and put different goals for them.
- Bigger pvp battles. I think that fleet squadron battles would have been better with 10 vs 10 instead of 5 vs 5.

I have been mainly flying practice missions for both sides trying to get my arms wrapped around everything.
I am running the Steam version and apparently have been pretty lucky in the performance department, the game both looks and runs great for me.

So far loving the game.
