I spent some time playing Stray in VR:
To play this in VR you need UEVR:
- and you'll need a very fast rig. Using Index res 200% (18 million pixels per frame) seems about the minimum for great non-blurry image quality, and I usually get between 40 - 70 fps with an RTX 3090, but motion smoothing makes it look like solid 80 fps. Motion smoothing in SteamVR works wonder for this game - feels even more smooth than ASW 2.0.
The following are all copies of images sent to the Index hmd lenses - but the images are here reduced in size. The game looks similar through the lenses, but has higher res in the hmd and is in full 3D effects when your brain turns two 2D images into one frame:
Using 80 Hz, I'm basically running the game in 160 fps and forcing a software rendering way beyond 4k res per eye
The lighting and high poly count make my RTX 3090 sweat - but it still runs great and feels like solid 80 fps in 80 Hz
Looks like real daylight - but is of course some HDR-ish effect
I do not recall more beautiful VR experiences. Apart from Call of the Mountain, not even Alyx has this kind of leaves and plants
The ground textures look amazing - and kinda show you what is possible if devs targeted full PC capabilities in VR games, like they once used to do... Many VR games are designed for the Quest hmds these days, which use very weak phone gpus (like the Adreno 740 in Quest 3), and this is greatly limiting the full potential of PCVR
You can push many elements like cans - physics are great - and the realtime lighting too
I'm still thinking UEVR would greatly benefit from an RTX 5090 Ti, but at least Stray plays great - that said, I would not want to use a much slower video card than RTX 3090 for this game.

Btw, Paradise Decay here gives a nice intro to Stray in VR - using a Quest 3 hmd:
Using UEVR, you can choose between OpenVR or OpenXR drivers, so Meta users can avoid Steam-specific drivers and use OpenXR for optimal performance.

I don't think words can explain how much I need to experience this. Just ask any of the other moderators, I'm obsessed with cats. 😻 Now I really need to start saving to upgrade my set up! 😸
What's your favorite part of Stray in VR?

Not really sure I've got a favorite part - it's a very coherent experience and oozes of quality. I do like exploring the different locations, I'm not much into the action and jumping puzzles.
With UEVR, controls are much like other 3rd person games - but the camera is more sensitive, does not feel as calm as in Moss. This means Stray probably requires some VR legs - probably by far not beginners first choice of a VR game 🙂
