SuperHyperCube - an awesome game in VR (one of my most frequently played games right now)

The game does not support Oculus or WMR hmds though, and therefore I earlier did only post about SuperHyperCube in the Index thread. I'm sure the devs can need all the attention the game can get - and maybe everything is easier to find in a thread. Furthermore, even if not officially supported, I read than several Rift users were able to play the game just fine:

"Works well with Rift & Xbox One controller. A perfect "just one more quick go" game - you can dip in and out easily."

Another user also got the game working with Rift and an XBox controller: https://steamcommunity.com/id/FastLawyer/recommended/554870/

It seems Rift users need to use a gamepad. For Index and Vive users tracked motion controllers are fully supported. Note than even if the Index and Vive are officially supported, it's probably only Vive being fully supported, thus Knuckles are shown as Wands, but work perfectly (Index controllers are designed to work perfectly as Wands).

The game is also available for PSVR if some users in here have that system.

The game looks simply stunning/gorgeous with the large Index fov, and a few weeks ago this game was the 6th top-selling SteamVR game - which was when the game caught my attention (never noticed the game before).

The game may look simple like Thumper, but surely the content isn't. IGN rated the game a solid 90 %:

"Superhypercube is simple, but thankfully the comprehensible premise doesn't confuse simplicity with shallowness. As your skill improves and the challenge increases, rotating and dropping the ever-changing three-dimensional shapes gets ever more engaging. When I eventually, inevitably crashed, I was always hammering restart the moment the prompt appeared. That’s the mark of an amazing puzzle game."

This game really is mindblowingly awesome in VR, even if it's a simple idea based on Tetris. But this is truly 3D and greatly benefits from VR. It's also a difficult game and might be great for some visual cognitive stimulation and training to build some cognitive reserve, lol.

This game being in full 3D feels like the one and only true Tetris VR.

The game may not be greatly optimized though, I got re-projections with res 250% in 120 Hz, but solid 120 fps with res 200% - and that's using an oc'ed RTX 3090. This looks like a simple game, not sure why it's performing worse than Alyx, lol. Not sure high levels of ss are very important in this game, it didn't look bad with Index res 100%. Achieving solid 120 fps by reducing res indicates that this game might not need a fast cpu, while a fast gpu may be needed (depending on how much ss you want).

The game lets you rotate a cube (=3D figure) in order to let it pass through a tiny opening in a wall. The may sound simple at first, but for every wall you pass, more pieces are added to the cube making it more difficult to find the correct cube orientation to pass the next wall. Also you don't have unlimited time - the cube constantly moves toward the wall, so you have to think fast. Some levels even have rotating walls and more - here you may have to focus simultaneously on wall orientation and cube orientation. This is my favorite review of the game on Steam:

"This is a humbling game. I feel so much dumber after playing it."

I guess this game is for those who ate all their veggies as kids and grew big healthy brains, not sure I did, sigh

The colors are awesome/psychedelic/hallucinogenic. I've never seen anything like it in VR, can't be properly shown here and it looks like some kind of illuminated/volumetric fog in-game, maybe is has to do with the Index panels, not sure if the same color effects are shown similarly using Vive/Rift oled hmds with some SDE...

This is a game I like to play for a few minutes - not a game I'd be playing for hours. If some thinks the game is expensive at $15, the launch price was $30 (AUD 45), so it's 50% off now 🙂

I'll probably rate it 8/10 for now - which for me is an extremely high rating for a game this simple. I guess you could describe this game as a diamond in the rough.

I'd like to up my rating of this game to 10/10. It's one of those kinda perfect games that do exactly what they should, no more, no less. Pure as fire - and although graphics are limited, it looks like taking lsd and watching 2001, lol.

I've come to realize I cannot possibly show this game using 2D images, it simply does not work. The dynamic lights, the colors, the feeling of just being there - fully transcend any 2D image.

Did try to take a few shots - Index res 200% - but the shots aren't good. Feelt like I may have to take 100 shots before one might look good... But do check to nice reflections on the sides of the cubes. To me, this game is like 10 times better than The Tetris Effect - and I still think the Tetris Effect is a great game 😉 But SuperHyperCube is just a solid piece of mindblowing awesomeness 😉

Hmm, the shots I posted earlier today are somewhat ... boring ... Maybe these are better? 🤔

Looks like some Index owners aren't too happy about the fact that Knuckles are turned in to Wands:

And the following Steam review reminds me of why I end up playing standard 2D games more these days than VR Games; due to the fact that there just aren't enough compelling and original VR Games on the market right now.

I have played both Thumper and Rez, so I would have to concur with this user that those are likely better options.

Or hell, just played a 2D game inside VR using VR Desktop! 😁
