The Vanishing of Ethan Carter VR is... not very good.

I owned the regular game for I while in my Steam library, but I only played few hours because I was patiently waiting for the VR version. Yesterday I purchased the VR DLC on Steam for $10 (and I wasn't very happy about having to give them more money just for the VR support, but ok, whatever), the problem is that the game in VR is probably one of the most nausea-inducing game I've ever played (and last year I forced myself through play session of Half-Life 2 and Alien Isolation, also very nauseating). The game runs very smoothly on my machine (i7, GTX980) but I can't play it for more than 10 minutes without starting to feeling dizzy and uncomfortable. We all know that FPS games are very hard to get right in VR, but they didn't make any effort in trying to make a better navigation system. Every time you rotate the view with the right stick, is like a punch in the guts. I had to close my eyes every time I wanted to change direction, and that's really not what a game should do to you. I know there is a "comfort" play mode, but that basically turns the game into a slideshow of 360° images, without the possibility to move around freely.
I'm really disappointed, I had great expectations for the VR version of this game, but it seems I won't be able to play it. So if you plan to buy this game and play it in VR be prepared to feel sick, unless you have a very strong stomach.

@pjennes Thanks for the tips but this is what I mean there are too many rules to be following about moving where you should be just playing the game. The controller does not give you a natural feel when turning. It accelerates too fast and you end up tapping the stick to get the turn. This makes for a very jerky experience.

Hiya. They are not really rules, just steps Ive noticed that help me get thru VR motion. Within a few minutes they are natural, and worth getting used to if you plan to play other VR games. (in particular FPS style)

I just finished the game and its really a good experience, happy with this purchase...The visuals are amazing. (smouldering fire looks very kool)
Look forward to wandering around in CV1 (eventually)

Regarding the turning, I think I know the problem. Go to the menu for Ethan Carter and there is a controls area, then controller setting. Set the sensitivity to 1 and try that. I played with around 15% using a PS3 controller.
The default setting was very fast turning I agree.

Good Luck

The lack of input support is making me cancel my pre-order. Oculus has severely betrayed us. I trusted them... this gamepad requirement bullshit has reached cancerous levels.

@pjenness Thanks, I will try decreasing the speed as you suggested. I am away on business but will try this weekends. I love the keyboard and mouse though.

Hello again everyone,

I just realized that I did not respond to several of you who asked about keyboard and mouse support. Well, we did not provide it as Oculus simply did not allow for it.

Thought that was the case, I understand why early games they would positively encourage it. I will say though Elite Dangerous has the support although it is a little different in the way it launches (plus I play that with a Hotas). You should have replied on the positive thread though 🙂 you just pushed this one to the top.

Any idea with the subtitles?

Yeah the subtitles are pretty messed up... I managed to get thru by closing one eye (which is actually kinda uncomfortable in the rift for some reason)

Looking forward to trying this when I get my Rift, out of interest does moving slowly help people? (ie half thumbstick movement)

As I mentioned before, the problem with subtitles occurs only with Oculus DK2 (from what we know) and we are not able to provide support for any versions of Rift rather than the consumer one. Sorry about that! Thanks for your understanding!

Now this is an old thread and all, but could you just implement snap turning ? All it needs is a slider for how many degrees and an analogue - digital conversion for the thumbstick input, i bet thats no more than 5 minutes in ue4. It would solve all the "Turning Nausea" comments in an instant. I dont really u nderstand why u went for the long haul and implemented a completely new movement system for Vr when all we really need is snap turning.
