The Virtual Reality Firing Range | Science Fiction

Howdy folks, my name is Scott and I have been developing games for around 8 years now as a freelancer and more recently as a hobby while I am now a college lecturer. I have been mucking with the DK2 for about a year now and just want to share a project that I've been working on for a few days.

In terms of game mechanics it's extremely simple and unoriginal but over time I hope to magically come up with some innovation! I love the idea of films such as Iron man, terminator, RoboCop etc. that have these fantastic HUDs so I want to make some awesome looking first person interfaces.

This is all been made using Unity 5.2 and the HUD looks strange in the video capture. When the rift is put on there is a small field of view so the elements fit nicely.

Any suggestions is always greatly appreciated!

Scott.

Looks great! Have you thought about developing this idea further and creating an on-rails shooter as opposed to a shooting gallery instead..? Because then you could have targets popping up either side of the player. It would also allow you to offer different themes to the main game such as horror, zombies, WWII, Vietnam War etc. as DLC.

A VR Vietnam War on-rails shooter in particular would work out REALLY well imo.

Thanks. Oh yes definitely.

I'm thinking of something akin to Time Crisis where the player will move to pre determined locations as they progress through the level.

I've just finished creating another "Combat Simulator" - This time the targets can shoot at the player however the player is now equipped with an energy shield that can be activated to block incoming fire. Limited energy supply though! I'll post another video sometime soon!

Thanks for watching!

Implemented a new "training exercise level" with targets that shoot back... muhahah.. But I've given the player a shield to have fun with. Created the shield shader using ShaderForge as well.

Skip to 2:15 for the new stuff!

I'm also interested in collaborating with any 3D artists out there with a love for science fiction. I will eventually get around to doing it but most of my time I am coding this demo.

Thanks for looking.

I could do you a probe/robotic drone of some sort if you want..? I've recently been playing around with ZBrush which is awesome. Not too sure what sort of files it can export offhand but I expect it can do Wavefront .obj files. Will see if I can knock something up next week. I'll do one or two with guns but you'll have to add a skeleton and firespots to it because I've got no idea what I'm doing lololol

I can give you the model and UV map but that's as far as my skills go at the moment. 😛

that would be very generous of you 😄

I would say though, that Zbrush is best for anything that is organic like characters. There are some hard surface modelling tools in Zbrush but they are quite hard to get right. But sure see how you get on 😉

I've just incorporated bullet time into the demo as well. That's the last mechanic I'm adding in. Running out of space on the HUD haha...

thanks.
