This is just a copy of a post I made in another thread, but few read such replies, and this game deserves more attention. I consider this one of the major PCVR releases this year. Seems other Index owners agree - my post about the game has been upvoted nearly 500 times on the Index SubReddit:
Thus it seems other high-end VR enthusiast agrees that Myst PCVR is a major release. But to repeat:
The high-end Myst VR version arrives next week. More info here:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1255560/Myst/
https://www.vrfocus.com/2021/08/the-pc-vr-version-of-myst-arrives-next-week/
New trailer:
The game is 20GB and the recommended gpu is a GTX 1070. Sounds like the real deal to me!
Seems even ray-tracing is supported, and the game is now more than twice the size of the low-end Quest version:
"Built from the ground up to play both in VR as well as traditional flatscreen displays, Myst is teeming with new art, new sound, re-imagined interactions, and even optional puzzle randomization. Finally... the highly anticipated Myst 2D/VR experience has arrived! [...]
- A large number of graphics options to choose from, such as supersampling options and Ray Tracing to bring the best Myst experience out of the hardware you have."
Looks like we're getting the full 2D version in VR, which may indicate we're getting the full polygon levels and more! Hopefully we can now truly experience Myst for the very first time. We'll see.
Btw, for Quest owners already having bought the low-end standalone Myst version, the high-end PCVR version will be free in the Oculus Store (=cross-buy).

The game is out - I'm in
Get it here:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1255560/Myst/
Right now there's a live broadcasting on Stream where you can see the devs play - fun to watch! Just click the above Steam link (same broadcasting is not available in the Rift Store).
Btw, just saw that devs were quick to answer one fundamental question, lol:
I think the PCVR version is cross-buy in the Oculus Store, so should be free if you already paid for the Quest version.
WMR should work too - more details here:

Does anyone know how to download the PC version with cross-buy? I purchased the Oculus version recently, but I don't see anywhere to either download the PC version or get a Steam key.

Hmmm, read this review on Steam:
"There is no need for me to review this game because everybody knows myst.
What I am going to talk about is the performance. Everybody seen me brag about the 300% supersampling I play all my games at but there is no need for that. I do play it at 300% though.
This game provides the VR legs people ask for with options available at for you to pick at start of the game which is a BIG bonus.
The other thing is it's very optimized on EPIC settings for my rtx3090 and SUPPORTS DLSS! which is a BIG WIN!
I never finished the myst series games because I have been waiting for a VR version of a game like this for over 20 years. Now it's here, now it's time to settle an old score.
controls feel natural on the index. this is a big win!
thanks CYAN!"
Well, the dude does not state his performance (fps), but if I want just 90 fps then even res 300% is close to a no-go when using the EPIC in-game setting, DLSS or not. Actually I think performance in the game is worse the Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot, lol. Myst still works fine - but I am using a RTX 3090. If I want solid 90 fps using EPIC settings, the game works fine in res 225% with DLSS Quality. If I Increase to res 300%, then 90 fps is a no-go with no DLSS, and I need to use DLSS Performance to get anywhere near 90 fps.
The game does run fine with no DLSS and EPIC settings using res 300%, but I don't get 90 fps - and motion smoothing is my friend. Actually didn't try to turn off motion smoothing, maybe that will help? 🤔 I'll test that later.
Still the game looks and plays great using either res 225% + EPIC + DLSS Quality - or just plain vanilla res 300% + EPIC. I still think Obduction is performing much better than Myst, and for those of you knowing Obduction you get the idea.
I took some shots using Index res 300%:
Rocks could look like some tessellation was used, but maybe it's just a high poly level...
Sun, shadows, and lots of 3D grass - looks awesome - but I kinda think PCVR users just got the raw 2D version...
Wooden textures - not bad - but actually not really Alyx nor Boneworks ultramersion quality either - but you need to see it inside the game
Water quality
Stunning floor 😮
Leaves up close
Volumetric lights
There's nothing like a great floor texture 🙂
Grass close-up
More painted wooden textures - and the polygon level is great
Of course this game is worth $30, especially if you like puzzles and are new to Myst. It's a great thing I haven't played the game for 19 years, so my memory is blank (more or less) and everything is fresh 😀

I see where I can "purchase" a free copy for Rift, but I only have a Quest 2. Is there any way I can download a Mac version?
08-26-2021 02:12 PM
I just got confirmation from Cyan. The cross-buy isn't an option for a Mac copy. I would have to buy a new copy.

I guess I stand corrected. The dude using res 300% + EPIC in Myst has a point - and res 300% is actually looking fine and I get solid 90 fps using DLSS Performance and EPIC settings. But res 450% is even better! 😮With res 450% it's not solid 90 fps, but motion smoothing works like a dream in Myst with the Index - at least as great as ASW 2.0 with the CV1 - and . Res 450% with DLSS Performance + EPIC settings is fully playable and looks gorgeous.
But can you see the difference comparing res 300% and 450%? It's harder in non-moving images and much easier in VR, but let's try:
Res 300% - CLICK TO ENLARGE - hint: watch the numbers in the clock very carefully:
Res 450% - everything is actually a lot sharper
Note that the above images are heavily zoomed in - from original images looking like this:
So res 450% it is from now on - great thanks to Nvidia for DLSS!
Btw - a bonus shot, also res 450%, but maybe hard to see here 🙂

Fun to see the original game from 1993:
28 years later Myst has evolved beyond my wildest dreams. Real-time graphics not even better than pre-rendered images in 1993, but so many magnitudes better there's no comparison at all.
I guess realMyst from year 2000 didn't deserve that name at all. Real Myst was the game arriving yesterday in VR.
With Myst VR it totally feels like activating my Cyberdeck - and I'm gone into another world
(- of course I do not smoke like that dude in the image, lol - no need to accelerate atherosclerosis and lung cancer 😉 )

Btw, nice review using the Rift - rating 90%:
https://waytoomany.games/2021/08/28/review-myst-vr/
"I’ve been a fan of Myst my whole life. I was already impressed with realMyst released last year, but playing this version in VR is a whole different experience entirely. It looks better, sounds clearer, and plays smoother. If you’ve never played Myst before, then you need to check it out. If you have played Myst before, then you need to check it out in VR to experience it in a whole new way."
- and a Gold Medal awarded here (both 2D and VR versions reviewed):
https://gnd-tech.com/2021/08/myst-remake-review/
"VR is the ultimate way to experience this game, for those who don’t suffer motion sickness from it. I can’t recommend it enough. It will help enable a newer generation to experience this wonderful, iconic game."
Unfortunately things are not looking good for Myst in the Rift Store - only 10 vores, even if it's cross-buy.
Myst for Quest has 700 ratings, Myst for Rift has 10 ratings - either most Quest users don't have rigs or don't care for real VR, or PCVR users are only buying on Steam. Seems water and oil don't mix for this game, lol. The Steam version does not support native Oculus drivers though.
Since the Steam version may mostly be sold to 2D users, it's not possible to estimate amount of copies sold to VR users. The Steam version right now has 362 ratings (combining VR and 2D users).
Myst PCVR may - by far - be the biggest and most important release so far this year - and yes I'd say that covering all computer games released this year. I'm confident experiencing Myst PCVR with the RTX 3090 using res 450% + Epic + DLSS Performance is an unmatched experience. Unless you're into some Furious Seas or A Wake Inn - also using extremely high-end settings - maybe 🤔 😉
