Tinertia - surprisingly fun and challenging VR platform game

RuneSR2
Grand Champion

What are the odds - I found a VR game launched some time ago I never noticed before, and even a fun game! There aren't many platform games in VR, sure we got Moss, Lucky's Tale, Glyph, Kin (maybe) and Witchblood, but great and fast arcade-like platformers are few. Welcome to Tinertia VR - trailer:

The game is here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/311930/Tinertia/

Introduction: "TINERTIA features a unique Twinstick Movement mechanic that lets the player rocket-jump and rapidly gain speed. The game’s 3D environments are stunning and intricate, especially in Virtual Reality, where players can truly immerse themselves in the world. Tinertia’s unique mechanics deliver an exciting mix of methodical platforming and fast-twitch shooting."

Tinertia was not made for VR, but VR support was added in 2017 and the game was updated in 2019 (adding support for many motion tracked controllers, also for WMR and Index). The game now supports Oculus hmds, WMR, Vive and Index. You can use an XBox controller or tracked motion controllers. I tested the game, it works great with the Index controllers.

This is a game that might remind you of the great old platformers, when we were kids - like platformers on home computers in the 1980s ans 1990s. Unfortunately this game may also remind some of us that we're not 10 - 15 years old anymore 😅

Everything is moving, and you have to get to the top

The devs had some great sense of humor making these minimum hardware specifications:

  • OS: Windows 7
  • Processor: 1.7 GHz Intel i3
  • Memory: 2 GB RAM
  • Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
  • Storage: 2 GB available space
  • Additional Notes: Controller or 2 Button Mouse recommended.

I started the game thinking this will be a walk in the park - and used Index res 500% and Ultra in-game settings. That was not exactly 90 fps 😬 It was playable using res 300 - 400%, but I had to go all the way down to res 200% to get solid 90 fps - that's with the RTX 3090, lol.

So using highest settings, this game is about as demanding as Lone Echo 2 😁 That said, you can reduce many settings and the game will still look good.

The game is very demanding using Ultra in-game settings

The game is much harder than Lucky's Tale, Tinertia is a somewhat hardcore platformer, but still great fun to play. The game works perfectly with Index controllers, and I'd be surprised if that does not count for Touch too.
