Update:

Version 1.1.0 is up on share but for some reason it still says "pre-0.6.0" even though it has been updated to 0.7.0.0.

https://share.oculus.com/app/virtual-comics

Changelist

Updated Oculus SDK to 0.7.0.0.

Improved memory usage.

implemented first pass of multi-threaded thumbnail generation(still needs some work).

Included VirtualComicsLauncher.exe with Windows file browser for direct opening of comicbooks.

Added experimental HMD pitch reset option to setting to allow for reclined viewing.

Tested and working on runtimes 0.7.0.0 / 0.8.0.0 windows 7 & windows 10.

Update:

Beta version uploaded.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/8418lucrjvtkwp6/ComicRifter64.rar?dl=0

As I had the day off today I thought it would be interesting to experiment with a comicbook reader in the rift.
And with a zoom function it isnt as bad as I thought it would be although CV1 res would certainly help thing.

I need to try this with a comic which uses multiple sized panels next and possibly play around with a sharpen shader.

Check out the readme for controls.

Hi opamp,

I tried running from c: root but no luck.

regarding

vcomp120.dll
vcomp120d.dll

within Windows/system32

and the same within Windows/sysWOW64.

I have vcomp120.dll in both of those directories but do not have vcomp120d.dll in either.

I am in administrator mode

I tried downloading the FreeImage-64.dll from the link you posted. I renamed it and copied over the FreeImage.dll in the Virtual Comics directory with no luck.

Hope that helps narrow it down a little.

I have windows 8.1 when I first installed it crashed when trying to open the folder with free comics but if I delete every comic exept the 2000ad it works fine. Hope this helps with the debugging

That worked for me.

So it looks like it's something to do with rar permissions on Windows 8 as cbz (zipped) comics work. 2000ad was the only .cbz free comic, the rest were .cbr.

I use a free program called bandizip to unzip/unrar files:

http://www.bandisoft.com/bandizip/

It has these capabilities:

Compression and Extraction:
Zip(z01), ZipX(zx01), TAR, TGZ, LZH, ISO, 7Z(7z.001), and EXE(e01).

Extraction Only:
RAR(part1.rar, r01), ACE, AES, ALZ, APK, ARJ, BH, BIN, BZ, BZ2, CAB, EGG, GZ, J2J, JAR, IMG, IPA, ISZ, LHA, LZMA, PMA, TBZ, TBZ2, TGZ, TLZ, TXZ, UDF, WAR, WIM, XPI, XZ, and Z.

I can read .cbr comics on all of my other image/comic viewers.

I really like this.
I have a LOT of digital scans (mostly golden age stuff) and I don't want to move them so I can read them. Are you planning to provide an option so I can choose my own library location?
Also, the space bar reset works for horizontal centering, but not vertical centering. I get bad vertical drift when sitting comfortably and looking straight ahead.
And do you plan to incorporate camera positioning so I can look closer when I lean in?

Thanks for the app! This would be ideal for Gear as well.
Not a Rift fanboi. Not a Vive fanboi. I'm a VR fanboi. Get it straight.

Hello all,

Thanks for the info in regards to windows 8.0/8.1 im not entirley sures whats going on at the moment but ive created a test build with a ton of logging plus i've implemented a fix for one of the possible causes.

You can download here https://www.dropbox.com/s/71t1y5pdihrzxqe/comicDebug.rar?dl=0.

If you could all give that a go with a cbr file and let me know that would be great.
(note: ive emptied the library to try and keep the file size down so you will have to copy a cbr over to it to test.)

If it is still crashing could you post a link to the log file that should be in "ComicReader/saved/logs".
Plus any info that come up in the Crash report client,

Cheers.

Edit* Ive also uploaded an older version of unrar64.dll for people to try if the above fix doesnt work.

Sombody elese requested a file browser and im going to look into adding that to the next version.
As far as the vertical drift is concerned ill look into that in the meantime you could always increase your vertical deadzone in the settings panel.

As far as camera position that it actually on its just that the books are very large and far enough away to the point that
moving forwards makes no difference.

This looks like the kind of thing that would be way easier to implement in Java.

The problem is really with the rar file type. I unrared one of my .cbr that doesn't work, zipped it and renamed with .cbz extention and it worked perfectly.
