VR Open - Virtual Reality Tennis for the Oculus Rift

Hey all! So, I know it has been an awful long time since VR Open 0.3. I apologize for that. It seemed like there were issues with almost everything. I decided to take a break from it, and had pretty much given up hope until Cymatic Bruce played it on his Sunday Stream last month. With his support, as well as the VR community, I started the entire thing from scratch. Everything has been redone - the menus, gameplay, and even the environment. It supports both right-handed and left-handed tennis players, and even has Linux support! Keep in mind, virtual reality is only at the beginning stages right now, so the experience might be a little rough. Therefore, please make sure you read the instructions before playing so that you can have the best overall experience possible. 😄 I'm pleased to announce that VR Open will be supporting the Sixense STEM and the Virtuix Omni!! 8-) The possibilities for this type of technology are endless. I have so much more work to do, but I am very pleased with the progress I have made. I hope you guys are too. For right now, you MUST have a Razer Hydra to play!

Btw, I have cancelled my other VR project called The Rift Zone. The Rift Zone was supposed to be a virtual reality arcade, movie theater, and club. However, there are so many people working on the same thing and I don't want to steal the spotlight from anybody. So, good luck to all VR devs out there who want to make such an experience possible! Mike did a fantastic job on Riftmax Theater and I know he will continue to do so 😄 There's a karaoke event this coming Thursday! Sing a song or two, or come and support me and the rest of the singers, and get a few laughs in as well! It will be a great time, for sure.

Things I plan on adding in the near future:

Local High Score System
Some more game modes (Multiplayer, Tournament, Etc.)
Virtual Avatar
Running and jumping
Ability to choose custom soundtrack
Courts and environments
Rackets
And much more!

I can ALWAYS use someone else to work with, so if anybody thinks they can help me with anything (3d modeling, server setup, programming) please visit my website: http://www.roachtyler.com

Please leave feedback in the comments on things you liked, or even things you feel I could improve on! Constructive criticism is the best kind of feedback. Also, keep in mind that while I do know Unity pretty well, I'm only 17 years old. xD

UPDATED: Mac and Linux users were having Hydra issues, should be fixed now. Also on Linux you need to have the Sixense SDK for Linux downloaded as well. Thanks guys!

I dig the look of it.
Not a tennis or a hydra fan, but I do like TRON 😛
I'll give it a shot when everyone is out of the house and I can avoid whacking them while blind.

Hey!

I really love tennis and I think there's somewhat potential in VR.
I tried out the demo - the setup is nice - but I had some issues with the gameplay.

I didn't manage to hit at least one ball :(.
For the neighbours I am sure - it looked crazy ;).

I couldn't read what the message was - I guess something with the hydra?
First time I played in 1920x1200 - but now I could read it in 1280x800

I pressed some buttons and then the racket was controlled with the other hydra. So I switched the hydras and I could control the racket - but then the game ended...stresssss...

my suggestion:
A very, very easy and slow beginners mode would be great - without time limit and without music.
Something to just get used to it. I think it really takes some time to handle this. It's like learning playing tennis in VR.
Maybe also without any background - or just a very flat one - maybe just black?

But it's a great idea - I really want to play VR Open :).

Thanks for making it! Will be great when it's optimised.

The music stresses - makes me kind of Andre Aggressive.
I can't hit any ball - it makes me want to hit my racket to the ground!!!

But you see - I am getting in the tennis mood - so this works! 🙂

Looks good, unfortunately I'm Hydra-less so can't experience the demo!

Have you thought of expanding this and adding some other sports? Basically a wii-sports clone in the Rift. (HydraSportsVR?)

Thanks Anticleric! I put a lot of work into it, so this was really nice to hear, especially from the developer of Technolust. 😄 Make sure you close your windows befre playing...you don′t want to get any surprise visitors. 😉

@AD2003 I agree 100%. It took me a few plays until I could even hit a ball. Just like real tennis, there should be a hands on tutorial, and also a beginner′s mode to get started. Thanks for your feedback - it is greatly appreciated.

Boff, that is actually an AWESOME idea! I will definitely consider it. 🙂 I′ve been wanting to create a baseball game as well, and I play a lot of sports so I could totally see this happening! If you want to work with me, feel free. Thanks so much for the idea.

I tried the first one, and this, well done for carrying on 🙂

The racket feels huge, but somehow feels like I'm controlling it with a hand but no arm.. there's no...swing? hard to explain, I think getting the perspective correct on a first person tennis player will be a fair bit of trial and error, you might want to experiment with some different camera setups.

I didn't manage to hit the ball once either and I really tried! 😄 Would like to be able to play this but sorry the controls just don't feel right, keep it up though you'll get there!

Too bad about the Hydra - they stopped selling them, and the one I did have broke after 3 months. They just weren't very well-made products 😞

Thanks guys. Right now the demo is only in the initial stages, just like VR is. Once more devices come out, they will open many more doors for virtual reality. It feels like you're using you hand and not your arm because currently your arm cannot be tracked with the Hydra, or at least it's very difficult to achieve. Like I said, this is only in the Alpha stages. However, something like PrioVR could do the trick. I'm looking into integrating that once it comes out as well. 😄 I think I'm going to experiment with other sports and maybe start another small project too.
