Virtual Desktop 1.0 - Now available on Steam

guygodin
Protege
Virtual Desktop is a little utility that improves your VR experience on the desktop. By efficiently replicating your desktop into the Rift, the application allows you to see your desktop on a giant virtual screen. You can browse the web, watch movies or even play non-VR games. It also allows you to launch VR games and resume from them without having to take your headset off.

After you launch Virtual Desktop, a tray icon will appear in your taskbar. From there you can manage your list of games, change your settings.

You can also drag & drop executables or shortcuts to add more games to your list.

Requirements
- Windows 8 or 10
- Oculus 1.3 Runtime

Latest Changes
- Added ability to browse 360 photos
- Added mirror to monitor feature

Works on Windows 10 with the CV1 ... amazing piece of software, perfect for video playback and playing normal screen based games (more options than Steam VR).

Thank you!

I bought it and tried it and its interesting...but not fully sure what I'd actually realistically use it for. Unless, are an of these options true:

Can you set up more screen spaces than you already have monitors, And use arbitrary VR world space instead of relying on the defined monitor areas.
For example put certain folders or apps around the world space area, not locked to the desktops panels.

Can you setup linked screens or folders with friends in VR, to see or share thru them?

How do people plan to actually use this day to day?

I used it a lot with my DK2 and will buy it as soon as my Gen 1 headset gets here. Here's my take.

1.Number one
reason: It's simply nice to play games that you already play, or do
things you already do (watch your favourite music videos or whatever) on
a massive theater sized screen.

2.I don't live alone and found
it nice to have some privacy. I can take a break from work and play some
poker online for money and no one knows lol

3. Version 1.0 offers you what you called "arbitrary VR space" you can move your icons anywhere from what I know. Playing 360 degree videos with a mindblowing ease is a must-have feature. You also get virtual cinema as a bonus instead of having to buy it separately.

...and many other reasons, but I hope that's enough to put things into perspective. Why would you want to use real world monitor when you can stay in VR 24/7 😄 😄

Keyboard use.

Has anyone worked out a good way to use a keyboard in VR?

I'm having an issue when I do the "Paste URL". It says "Failed to download video: Error: Unable to download webpage..." I have the 1.3 runtime with my DK2 installed. I can do everything else with it, but not watch 3D videos from youtube. Can you help

I get 4k video downloader, que it up with about 10 or more videos to download from youtube

point the VRDesktop to the video files

This is a much faster way, the VRdesktop downloader takes a long time and I dont know why

Go to your local craft store and find a bunch of small unique stickers. Little puffy gel things that have some sort of depFor example, I have arrow stickers covering my WASD, the borders of my keyboard between PLM and {:<. My numpad has a cross on the five, and I have a few other hotkeys... 1 is a heart for potions. 2 is the letter D and that's for my bow. 3 is a skull for Krosis, etc. Even if you have gnarly guitar callouses, your fingers can "see" pretty well. You just have to have a few reminders here and there. I also recommend finding a typing tutor program like 3rd grader stuff, and just CRUSH it. The age gap will make you feel like a badass so you'll try harder to type better. It helped me. 95wpm!

What do I need to look at to get the program to run? I start it up, in VR i get a large black screen (thats the same size at my 3 spanned monitors) then the program crashes. Ive tried on both my old install and a new fresh OS install. both crash. Win10 SLI 970's

Also, Kaspersy AV totally flips out on the editor program. To the point of locking down my system then running a heavy root kit scan. Any way to get them to validate it and add it to a bypass good program file?
