VirtualReality.io 0.9.14 Released

mattsonic
Honored Guest
A new version of VirtualReality.io is now available with 41 VR apps ready for download and launch.

VirtualReality.io is an Oculus Rift application downloader and launcher. It lets you download and launch games from within the Rift, and also comment on them and give ratings. The goal of the project is to create a platform where you can jump between VR experiences without ever taking off your Rift.

Thanks to your feedback, this is the most stable and feature-rich version yet. Thanks to the app publishers and the beta testers!

Beautiful! Really enjoyed using this. It was great to see the Planet1 demo again. Pretty cool to just seamlessly be dumped into it and off you go. 🙂

Seems like it downloads at light speed, so that's awesome. Are these hosted in a central location or using the external download links that the devs provide? The download queue was fun to watch. I stopped short of trying to launch one of the games while a download was still in progress. Will that work? Once all my downloads were finished, I tried launching from the Downloads tab but seems like nothing happened. It worked fine from the "My Apps" tab.

I of course tried out Titans of Space, but found that it's launching it in non-stereoscopic mode so obviously unplayable with the Rift at that point. Is there a way for the dev (either the game's dev or you) to customize which quality level is chosen at launch time? How does it choose that right now?

And lastly, I want to thank you for the new signup option, great for people like me that have one username/password per service as a rule.

Great job on this! 🙂

Also, I'm curious where the downloads are actually stored on my system -- I usually download/install stuff like this to my HDD (E:) rather than my low-on-space SSD (on C:) so I'm curious if there is a way to know where things are being downloaded to and stored. If it's on the C: drive somewhere, is that configurable? I installed VirtualReality.io itself to my HDD, was hoping to see it store the games under that folder somewhere but I don't see them anywhere.

Awesome! Thanks Drash. Your games rock.

It's all hosted on S3. Not yet from the Cloudfront CDN, but still pretty fast if you are in the US.

Yup 🙂 You can launch apps while others download in the background. In fact, that's what I do most of the time when I'm testing big apps. I'll generally pop into another app and play around until the download is finished.

Once all my downloads were finished, I tried launching from the Downloads tab but seems like nothing happened.

Hmmm. I'll take a look at that. This is *very beta* software. But, I'm working on it all the time and it's getting much more stable.

I of course tried out Titans of Space, but found that it's launching it in non-stereoscopic mode so obviously unplayable with the Rift at that point.

That might be due to your cached Unity PlayerPrefs. I'm considering a few methods of correcting for that. Did you set Titans of Space to be non-stereoscopic during the last time you configured it?

Is there a way for the dev (either the game's dev or you) to customize which quality level is chosen at launch time? How does it choose that right now?

The quality level is set to the default. For a Unity app like Titans of Space, it's whatever you pick for your default Standalone Player settings. Currently, the best solution is to adjust graphics quality (and any other configuration settings) inside of VR after the app has loaded.

And lastly, I want to thank you for the new signup option, great for people like me that have one username/password per service as a rule.

I'm glad it worked out 🙂 It was, by far, the most requested feature. The response was overwhelming. I'm shocked at how many people thought I was trying to steal their Google passwords

I'm curious where the downloads are actually stored on my system -- I usually download/install stuff like this to my HDD (E:) rather than my low-on-space SSD (on C:) so I'm curious if there is a way to know where things are being downloaded to and stored. Great suggestion! This request in on the feedback forum. It's scheduled for an upcoming release.

Right now, everything gets stored under your AppData directory on Windows. But, you're right that it should be configurable for folks with SSDs.

Thanks for all the feedback! Also, your app has performed extremely well on VRIO. Nice work! People love it.

PS. If you want to take over admin control of the app, it's a simple process. Lemme know and I'll swap it over. You'll be able to update your app, edit the text, and be notified about its performance (e.g. how often people are downloading, playing, and commenting on it).

Oh wow, I see how that works then. Yes, the last time I fired it up was to check a translation in non-stereoscopic mode. I just cleared out playerprefs for Titans from my registry and I confirmed that the default quality level and resolution are the ones I want, so all good to go here!

That would be great! I'd like to bring it up to the newest version and clean up the description text a bit.

Nice app! 🙂

Option to choose HDD is very important for me as well since i also has a low space SSD as main drive so its pretty much a deal breaker to not be able to choose location.

I grabbed this last night and it's brilliant.
I also need configurable storage destination as using SSD.
One thing I noticed was it was quite eye straining on the loading screens. On the machine I used I hadn't run the latest Oculus SDK so didn't have the IPD set..does this use the IPD setting?

Great! I have been working two weekends on something like this (though bit different in it's implementation), but couldn't get the launching to work out right (the launched games wouldn't see the oculus rift tracker and razer hydra + I would still get the unity config dialogs, really curious how you solved that second part). Either way, looking forward to checking it out and will come back to you with either some ideas from my own project (if I decide to give up on my own thingie) or spam you with questions how you solved certain problems 😛 .

AVG ended up giving an unknown virus warning for the UWKProcess.exe~ giving you the benefit of doubt for now as it seems to be a part of uWebKit, but still kinda odd.
