YouTube 8K 360?

Hi,

I just got my new Rift S unboxed and setup.

I have no interest in games.

I do have an interest in virtual tourism and high quality (ideally 8K or better) 360 video content, the primary source for which is YouTube.

On my old Odyssey, I would just install https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/p/360-viewer/9nbb1023slzf and then click the button on the youtube website and I was in.

I see no such thing for the Rift S?

Searching here, I read there is a YouTube app for the mobile HMD's, but can't find anything for Rift S in the Oculus store? (I specifically went with the cabling of the Rift over the Quest, as I heard Quest can't do over 4K video very well).

I made sure WebVR support was working in Firefox, but navigating to YouTube, I see no way to view it in VR?

I tried the beta YouTube VR app on Stream, but it's limited to a useless 1080.

Is there really no way? Did I make a huge mistake buying this?

1) YouTube VR - tried that already, only does 1080.
2+3) Virtual Desktop/Deo - I have to copy and paste links one at a time, and download first to view? That's crap.
4) Opera - I just tried this but it didn't work. It sounds like the feature couldn't handle high-res videos and was removed.

I tried pasting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_tqK4eqelA into Deo, it's totally janky, pausing 500+ms at a time, and also doesn't display correctly...p14r8hdqpf5y.jpg

And Virtual Desktop is fail as well...

So, that leaves, let me count... zero options.

I also stitch gigapixel panoramas, and couldn't find a good viewer for those either (w zoom, NAS drive support, etc). HQ photos+video should be job one. Guess it's still just for games. I returned the Rift S to Best Buy.

So you didn't try whirligig ?

Unfortunately it seems to play those with reduced quality (1080p).

Whirligig settings in nutshell for this one:
Barrel 360 degrees
settings/playback/videopath: video lan (youtube streaming doesn't support directdraw)
To play: open "givemesomename.stm"-file* which contains link to youtube video

*) you can use notepad to edit .stm files. I linked example to this post, but had to zip it because forum is not allowing to upload .stm files

If you had linked some panoramas, would had tested them too as whirligig does have built-in image viewer.

No. I posted the link above, feel free to give it a try and report back though.

That shouldn't look blurry - you sure it's playing the 8K stream?

And, yeah, I'm striving for image quality in VR that rivals a 720p monitor, thus the 8K.

Editing an .stm file every time you wanna watch a video is no way to live one's best life.

Much Thanks for testing.
