Youtube for the Oculus Rift

I've created a Chrome extension that allows one to watch youtube videos in the Rift.

It's very new so it has quite a few requirements:

  • Chrome only with webGl enabled (looking into Firefox)

  • Youtube only (will be adding more sources)

  • You must provide youtube with HTML5 preference: https://www.youtube.com/html5

  • It requires the vr.js plugin for full support: https://github.com/benvanik/vr.js (without it you'll just get a 3D panoramic view which is still pretty cool!)

Source: https://github.com/slawrence/video-vr-extension

And finally here's the link to the extension:

Nice work. This would be great if it worked on one of my chromebooks but I bet that vr.js plugin is going to stop that.

Yes there is not currently a nice and elegant way to read Rift sensor data in a browser right now. I will look into other projects but they all require a bit of setting up (e.g. running a server).

Thanks! Again, I should probably look into the other projects related to reading Rift sensor data into the browser. vr.js is using NPAPI, which is being deprecated.

I'm not sure what the actual solution for interfacing with the browsers will be. Any thoughts?

Hi

Could you please help me get this working? I got the vr.js and managed to load that into chrome. Then I downloaded the extension and loaded that. I also downloaded video-vr-extension but when I try and load the CHROME folder under the SRC folder then it fails to load. The help says to load DIST/CHROME but I don't see that and I don't understand about the make dev- chrome thing either. Sorry, bit of a noob here.

I try and play html5 video in youtube and the extension says it sees a video but there is no headtracking and the shortcuts do not work.

Thanks.

I just found this and it's awesome with my DK1!
That being said, is there any chance of getting this to work with DK2?

I think it would be perfect with the DK2's screen.
