very late, but loving Demeo

I've played it before, but barely for long - before that, Table of Tales sold me on the concept. But Demeo is just tabletop RPG turn-based combat with cards and dice on a living board, no story besides 5 different generic scenarios. But **bleep** it's good, and extremely addictive, polished and quite hard. You really need to plan your moves, sloppy casual playing gets you nowhere - varying paths characters take, taking opportunities, retreat when necessary is key.

Today, after several different skirmish sessions, I finally beat the first scenario! The mad Elven queen has fallen... so satisfying!

so, I guess it's wholly sold mainly as a social experience, but I'm really not a social guy - I played fully offline, wifi even off to spare battery on Quest. Had full command over the entire 4-player party - felt like a Square-Enix JRPG. I'm sure the multiplayer is stellar if you have old RPG friends far away with a VR headset around and want to bring back that magic basement fun...

Tho this is not official Dungeons & Dragons (or Cages & Mages as a poster in the environment depicts) the influence is obvious. And what brought me back to it is precisely upcoming Triangle Strategy from Square-Enix, a Quest port from a Switch flat game that looks just like a spiritual sequel to classic Final Fantasy Tactics. It looks to be missing all the niceties of a true made for VR game like Demeo, but has story and production values not generally available in indie budgets.
