Hello everyone! We are a 4 people team from Agharta Studio and Blackmuffin, we worked on EpicDragon VR for 2013's VR Jam.

Our game is called SteamCrew VR and it offers players to play as treasure hunters Captain' Karkass and Ida Steele, crew of pirate steam submarine Rocketshrimp.
On a quest for the magical gems of the darkest abysses, they will face both the mysterious guardians of Yyl and vicious rival pirate submarines!

SteamCrew VR is now available for download!

The game requires 2 Gears on the same WiFi network to play.
It's not yet possible to steer the sub playing solo, we are working on that.




INSTRUCTIONS

- Pilot's seat, is responsible for navigation, steam tanks positions are marked on the Gyro Ring. STEER the ship through gaze while HOLDING on the touchpad. SWIPE FORWARD to ACCELERATE. SWIPE BACKWARD to REVERSE, engine consume steam. Check the submarine's steam level and current consumption. Toggles LIGHTS on/off by TAPPING on the button. Turning it off saves steam. At the gunner's signal, TAPPING on handles to FIRE torpedoes or rocket.

- Gunners's seat, is responsible for observation. detects enemy positions by TAPPING on the Sonar's button. AIM and lead targets with the turret through gaze while HOLDING on the touchpad. Shoot the back of enemies to score Critical hits (x2 damage) SWIPE UPWARD to CLIMB. SWIPE DOWNWARD to DIVE. Check the submarine's steam level and current consumption. Use Gyro Ring ring to communicate enemy position to the Pilot.

The game requires a lot of teamwork, communication and coordination.
So far our record is around 600.000 🙂

We'll be posting an instructional video soon to explain the gameplay in a more pleasant way.

The last jam was a very cool experience so we thought we'd enter this one!

The project will be running on Unity4; that's a big challenge for us since we have no prior Unity experience 🙂

I'll try to update this devblog is often as we can with bits of game design, visuals, screenshots and hopefully videos (once we manage to record stuff on the Gear! )

In the meantime, we wish everybody good luck and great fun 🙂

Sandra & Mathieu from Blackmuffin are doing concepts; then I use these to both model and pick colors while texturing in blender's texture paint mode.



It's been a long time since the last update so here are some news;

We've been thinking about our focuses a lot, we want to have something interesting to play that is fully fonctional at the end of the jam instead of a lot of disparate systems that barely work together.

We're going to cut the collaborative repair system as it requires too much tweaking and balancing for the time we have left.
Also we're going to keep only one "scalable" opponent, that will basically behave the same way but will be more or less armored and bear different weapons.

We added some more objectives instead of scoring only. A supplies system in order to keep the sub afloat. That's going to add an interesting social dynamic as one player might want to go hunting while the other would prefer finding supplies.

It's more important to have "readable" systems and feedback to make sure players understand what's happening and what they're supposed to do during the game.

Right now aside of the whole presentation with a title screen, tutorial and a whole game creating/joining system, it's mostly game tweaking and balancing.

We're going to work on a solid Gamemanager entity that ensures an increasing rythm in enemy's spawning along the game, a good scoring amplitude and a good game experience overall.

The game is getting closer to feature complete! (after we had to cut stuff here and there..!)
We decided to add a lot of feedbacks, old school style. It will break a little immersion but it's adding a whole lot of satisfaction!




There is a bit more tension now with the Steamtanks system, you have to keep the sub powered by picking up Steamtanks; shown on the Pilot's ring, smaller tanks can be dropped by enemies.
It's a trade between scoring and staying alive.

Tomorow we're going to work on the game manager to make the game harder as time passes, spawn harder enemies but more scoring opportunities 🙂

We also need to work on the splashscreen/lobby thing along with small tooltips to make sure people understand what they have to do. You will be able to play the game and explore the world on your own with only one gear. Player two will join as gunner when she/he connects.

Tonight we're going to an Indie Drink thing in our area so we might get a last round of very interesting feedbacks 🙂

Great news for single players! Don't know how many people have two GearVR's or are close enough to meet up!

Things are getting tense over here !

But first I have to tell you what we went through;
On Thursday evening we got out for a drink with other indies downtown, we were planning to get some feedback on settings and tweaks.
It was a disaster, the game prove far too complicated to learn without instructions and counter-intuitive in a lot of ways. I was shaken after struggling to explain our concept to players as they had trouble simply getting around.

So, we took notes with detailed feedback, I brainstormed during the night (gamedesign related nightmares!) and came up with ideas and tweaks to make the game a lot more understandable and accessible.

"No battle plan survives contact with the enemy" as they say... Cool story 😛

We made rules more visible and simplified movement. Reworked our icons and color codes to connect similar things, designed a quick tips screen with which you get all the infos you need in a single contextual view.

Here's a mockup for our menus; heavily inspired by the ones we did for EpicDragon VR, we'll try to get a video of these ingame tonight 🙂

Had a go of this but all I got was a black screen after starting as the pilot.
The gunner couldn't connect because the pilot mode never started.
Tapping back you see a little bit of the cog model before it shows the Oculus menu but backing out of that just goes back to the black screen again.

Thanks a lot for reporting the issue, we are working on a fix right now, you can get in by tapping to join as gunner right before the Pilot holds to create a game (I know it's a little weird 😛 )
