PhaseShift is a 2.5D Cinematic platformer action/adventure featuring unique stylized 3D retro pixel art.
In the spirit of titles such as "Another World", "Braid", "Oddworld", or "Limbo" - PhaseShift offers an exciting new take on a classic genre!

Our game tells the story of Dr. Hoffman, a brilliant chemist who, as a result of a breakthrough discovery - accidentally synthesizes a compound which activates latent receptors within the human brain. Eventually, this discovery allows him access to a mysterious alien realm, in which he finds that a superior race of beings has been observing and shaping the course of humanity since it's very beginning.
Join Dr. Hoffman as he unravels the true nature of reality, and help him reveal the secrets of this strange new hidden dimension.

PhaseShift is an atmospheric side-scroller featuring traditional cinematic platforming gameplay - but with an innovative VR twist: "Phase-Shifting"!
This ground-breaking platformer mechanic brings completely new gameplay possibilities to platforming, by letting players peer into simultaneously existing parallel dimensions using an innovative 'looking-glass' feature.

I really look forward to trying this one out. I'm a note 4 lollipop so I'll have to wait, but this is high on my want list.

Hey guys,

In celebration of making it into the finalists of the VRJam, we'd like to offer you a DK2 version of PhaseShift! It was a tough crunch with all of the assets being made by hand and we're honored to move on in the judging.

This version is best played with a gamepad, tested mostly with an XBox 360 controller.

Download the DK2 version of PhaseShift
Download Mirror

For those without a controller, the keyboard controls are:

  • WASD - Move

  • F - Toggle lens

  • Shift - Run

  • Space - Jump

  • Ctrl - Interact

  • Tab - Reset HMD Orientation

We look forward to hearing any feedback you guys may have, and if you like PhaseShift, please vote for us here!

I'll leave you with some Carmack...

Just letting you know... from my point of view you should probably be the winner of the jam 🙂
This is an awesome job and very creative.

Finally got around to playing this on DK1 (don't have a bluetooth controller)
It's really fun and you add a nice twist on the dimension hopping mechanic.
I did notice a bug when you get the lens that you can skip a lot of the platforming by pressing right and flicking the lens on and off to clip through walls you're not supposed to.

Well done on the entry and good luck with the judging. 😄

Thanks man, that means a lot - there were and are a ton of other great entries though!

Thank you sir, there's definitely a ton of things we have in mind for the lens in the future. It has a ton of versatility and possibilities. I was wondering if someone would try to break the collisions like that, haha, there's a good bit of tweaking to be done still. We mostly need an easier level to show off the mechanics as it takes a few tries to get used too and some people struggle with the moving platforms.

We have a lot of VR-specific elements in mind for future iterations as well.

The concept is interesting and it looks like a fun game based on videos. I didn't play it yet, but will as soon as I get a bluetooth controller.

I wonder: how did you make that "interdimensional lens"? Is it a quad with a texture in front of main OVR cameras, where a second pair of OVR cameras render themselves on that texture?

Hey, sorry, must've missed this. Yes, we use extra cameras to render to the texture in front of the main cameras. We have other ideas for the full game to improve performance but we've been able to maintain a pretty steady 60fps with this method so far - and I, personally, think our game looks fantastic. Speaking of...

We did win a bronze prize, so that's awesome.

Overall I'm quite disappointed with that though. Not to take away from other games, but I really feel that PhaseShift would have been higher on the list had the correct build been used for judging and not the fourth to last one submitted before the deadline.

So! For anyone that wants to try the Gear version that we wanted to get into the hands of the judges, please check out our winner's page build here: http://vrjam.challengepost.com/submissions/36904-phaseshift

We REALLY appreciate ANY feedback!

We have big plans for PhaseShift in the future and intend to bring a full game to multiple VR platforms.

I was pretty upset when I saw PhaseShift so low on the list. I haven't even been able to play it myself and I can still tell that that's not quite right. Is there anywhere I can follow your progress with making a Google Cardboard capable version? I'm really anxious to try the game for myself!
