Endless Elevator

Jose

Not meant for end-user consumption.

This game isn't done. I had to submit an old incomplete build because I accidentally broke my Unity project folder and did not have time to recreate the game.

If you understand that, but still want to try it out, then follow the directions below. Feel free to contact me or post in this thread if you can't get it to work and I will try my best to help you.

The best experience for this demo is with Razer Hydras.

Endless Elevator

A simple and looping VR experience

Originally created for the Oculus and IndieCade VR Jam, Endless Elevator is a simple 60 second VR experience where you stand in an elevator that is ascending an infinitely long shaft.

Optionally, it is also a tech demo showing Razer Hydra positional head and hand tracking, and an in-game web page viewer.

Please read these instructions, because none are included in the download.

How to Experience

  • Download the file -- Windows only -- Hosted by OculusVR

  • Unzip the file to a location on your hard drive

  • Run the executable

  • Once inside the experience, press spacebar to toggle the configuration menu

  • Set your "eye height" to something around 0.5m

  • Experience the Endless Elevator

  • Press escape to exit

How to Enable Positional Head and Hand Tracking

Make sure the Hydras are connected before you launch the game. Mount the left hydra to the top strap of the Oculus Rift e.g. using tape or bands. The left and right hydras look identical, but they're different in the labels on the trigger and bumper. The left hydra has the markings "LT" and "Lb" when looking at the trigger with the thumbstick pointing down.

Once you're inside Endless Elevator, press the trigger on the left/head tracker, and then the trigger on the right/hand tracker. Then, relax and sit up or stand up straight. Press the start button on the left/head tracker.

The floating Hydra object with a plane on it (which is the web page viewer) can be taken control of by pressing start on the right hydra controller.

How to Enable The In-Game Web Page Viewer

In the VRJam build, there's limited functionality for viewing a specific web page on the internet. This functionality is dependent on the presence of some files that I removed in order reduce the file size of the VRJam submission.

To re-enable the missing functionality, download the addon zip file (hosted on Box) and extract its contents to the folder: endless-elevator-VRJAM-2013-08-12_Data\Plugins

These files are from Awesomium SDK 1.6.2, which is the Unity plugin I'm using to enable the web page viewing.

Hi

"Endless Elevator" is my WIP VR Jam entry. I will update the OP whenever I have something new I want to share.

I will also bump this thread once for each milestone.

Would be cool to put an Endless (fractal) Elevator in Outerra ( http://www.outerra.com ) as a space elevator

Starting from ground level up into space and away into the solar system

It would just keep going and going, what a view! 😉

3D planetary engine for seamless planet rendering from space down to the surface. Can use arbitrary resolution of elevation data, refining it to centimeter resolution using fractal algorithms.

Unlimited visibility, progressive download of data, procedural content generation.

You could even add jumping from the elevator to skydive

The OP has been updated for Milestone 1.

I submitted my milestone screenshot on time on Friday. Here is a screenshot of my submission:

Thank you Harley, Arowx, whoisonline, inmediastudio, for the comments, suggestions, and offers.

If you want to help me playtest, or if you just want early access, post here in this thread (or PM me) saying that you want to help test, and I might PM you back if I have something I need tested. I have no playable demos yet, but I aim to have at least one before Milestone 2.

I will bump this thread again after I submit my Milestone 2.

Hi. I updated the OP with a download link to my VR Jam submission and some instructions on how to get it working.

Here's a screenshot of my Jam portal showing that I completed all the VR Jam requirements.

This is still fun. I'm going to continue making Endless Elevator.
