We are happy to announce that our entry in the Oculus VR Jam “Space Marine Boot Camp” has been successfully uploaded and is ready for judging!

You can download and play here:

Here's what you get:

Space Marine Boot Camp (SMBC)

“I’m gonna push you ’til you puke!”

Do you have what it takes to become a Space Marine? You’ll find out soon enough in this humorous look at the future of space training!

“Listen up Privates! I am your virtual drill sergeant – ‘Sarge A-H01E’. You are now entering Space Marine Boot Camp! This may be the future, and you may be used to all the soft technological luxuries that progress has provided you – all up ’til now that is! Other than your VR headset, you won’t be enjoying any luxuries here. You’ll do as I say, when I say! As you are no doubt aware the extraterrestrial enemy is upon us. We must eliminate these slime-covered terrors before they eliminate us. That’s where you come in. Currently you are the dregs of mankind, but, when I’ve finished training you, moulding you – the privates who endure will prove that they are the Best-of-the-Best! The Soldiers of Tomorrow!

“From the dizzying Human-Centrifuge, the chaotic Target Practice, right up until the intense Search & Destroy mission, we will see who has what it takes to pass Boot Camp and prove they are Space Marine material!”

“So eyes forward! Pay attention! And prepare for the ultimate test of stomach-churning resilience!”

In Space Marine Boot Camp you are challenged to six unique missions which each highlight a feature of the Oculus Rift and 3D VR gaming. SMBC is best played with an Oculus Rift headset and headphones so you can enjoy the atmospheric environments, realistic 3D sounds, jump scares, asteroid fields, flying missions, free-falls, probing aliens and of course the satisfaction of relieving space-sickness!

SMBC uses the head-tracking feature of the Oculus Rift to drive all the menus and gameplay, with a single button press (either spacebar or gamepad button) for interactions. This makes for a very natural and intuitive experience that can be enjoyed by a range of players of different skill levels. To push the more competitive players you get awarded bronze, silver or gold depending on performance for each mission – or a real bad result might have Sarge ejecting you into space…

Can you score gold in all six missions and unlock the Space Marine’s secret weapon?

Good luck, and remember:

“In space, no-one can hear you puke.”

The various mini-games are fun and the overall aesthetic/sense of humor is great. Nice job!

Thanks Tummler! I think the mini-game format worked out really well for the jam - plus we've got a lot more ideas for future missions if the game resonates with players and we decide to expand it.

Are there any other missions you'd like to see us add?

Argh, cannot get gold on that last mission. I always seem to take just a bit too long...

Thanks for trying it out Fluke. The last mission is pretty hard to get gold in! First off you need to learn where all the targets are. Then you need to spam heaps of bullets from a distance and peal off to the next target with the confidence that your shots will take the target down. I can do a game play video and put it up if you'd like - let me know!

That was the approach I was taking in the end, but I always ended up at a point where they wouldn't connect on one target or another, and if that happens it takes too long to correct it.

Certainly a fun demo, but that spike in difficulty on the sixth game is massive compared to the first five.

Fair enough! If this ends up going anywhere after the game jam in addition to more missions we'd do a lot more testing and tweak the difficulty/reward settings. Thanks again for checking it out!

I really enjoyed this, games with replay value are all ways great! The centrifuge mission was epic, this is the fastest I have ever moved in the rift and I don't get vr sickness so it was really fun to do. The humor of Sargent A Ho1e was great too it really adds a lot to the game it self. Virtual Puking is so much better then puking in real life as well! 😄

The flying mission was a bit of a pain because I had to rotate all the way around in the chair to turn in game. There are a few games like Epic Dragon that use the rift to fly and it would be a lot easier if it was like that. A reset Rift orientation button would be nice, mine got messed up a few times. Other then that I really enjoyed this game. Thanks for sharing and I hope to see more!

Really enjoyed it, thanks. I was feeling a little nauteous from changing between too many programs at once, my brain got a bit addled. I figured it was time to try bootcamp centrifuge for the first time to see if I could actually make myself puke!! I managed it just fine and then went on to complete all the games with bronze or greater, few golds. By the time I finished I no longer felt queezy, even with the amusing puking intervals. That's fun to point directly upwards!

Search and Destroy needs to orient like Elite Dragon VR. I was spinning around in my chair, at one point with my arm reaching out behind me to jam the space bar!

I think changing between demos/games should be done with caution but this game is great fun and not as nauseating as I thought it might be!

I dunno for whatever reason people would say this game gets you nauseatic, I didn't encountered any place where it would do such things. Except centrifuge, which I have to notice has cool actually perceivable motion effect, but only until certain speed at which strobing start being noticeable and illusion of motion breaks. Having bigger texture tile size would help a lot.

Vomiting all over the bathroom was fun, but it didn't stuck to the ceiling which was a bit disappointing.

Hey guys, we are just uploading a DK2 version to the oculus share site. It might take a few days for it to get thru the system, but if you need an OSX version now you can download here: http://goo.gl/52yog2

I'll post again when the update has been approved. Cheers!
