What is the best way to approach a VR Jam project?

Ok, so here is the deal.

1-I am somewhat experienced in doing simple vr stuff (have a demo for oculus dk1/2 on share).
2-Already have a concept and idea for a gear vr demo
3-in fact, i already cooked up a sample scene for it, with assets and concepts in place. runs smoothly for the most part, and it is a HUGE interactive environment.
(from what I understand, I can't start building stuff yet (just assets), so this scene is not for the demo, but more to gauge if the hardware can roughly handle what I want to do)
4-I feel i might be able to develop it own my own, but perhaps in a team i can deliver a much better product
5-Yet, i am self taught. not a real programmer nor project manager so my questions are:

-Should I develop on my own or a team?
-Will sharing my idea open things up for someone to copy my idea, or improving upon it, making my efforts to compete harder?
-If i have a simple scene demo already for VR, should i share in here, to get feedback... again at the risk of revealing too much?

Keep in mind, my idea ain't that great or groundbreaking. in fact, probably there are 20 just as good and similar. My intent on asking is because i have never done a jam before, and I want to be prepared in order to do things right 🙂

on reddit I was told to just start since they can't prevent it anyway ... so just saying you should not wait, they want awesome jam titles 🙂

Yes, you can start working on your game right now. There's no problem with that.

ok, guess ill start getting more serious now 🙂
still, any thoughts of sharing vs keeping secret? how did it worked out for the peeps at the regular oculus vr from last year?

It's up to you. If you go solo, you're in full control and you have to do everything.

If you form a team, you will probably end up with a higher quality product, especially if you team up with people who are skilled in areas that you are not. But that's only if you can find a team of trustworthy people with compatible workflows and work ethic. If you team up with random internet strangers, there's a real possibility that they might bail in the middle of the project.

There's always the possibility that someone with higher skill will like your idea and implement it better than you. But also keep in mind that last vr jam's crowd favorite, Dreadhalls, had a very active WIP thread in which the developer shared his progress.

It's up to you. If you believe that you have no chances of winning any prizes, and your main goal is to improve as a developer/creator, then you might learn a lot if you share everything and be open to feedback and criticisms.

My intent on asking is because i have never done a jam before, and I want to be prepared in order to do things right 🙂

Don't worry about that too much. As long as you don't disqualify yourself, there's really no "right" way to do a jam.

thank you very much for all the feedback. Specially jose, your detailed reply really gave me all the info that I wanted/needed. I am not sure if I got anything that can really be considered as a wining contender, but looking at some of the game demos on gearvr marketplace, I would dare to say that I might have a very minimal slight chance 🙂
Will keep everyone posted. Thanks again 🙂

Ok, so I have decided that I want to post my first sample to see if I get any interest or feedback. again, all I am doing with it now is testing to see how far I can push the hardware (so my idea/story/concept is still kind of safe). So, if I wanted to share the APK, where would I post it? here as a link to my onedrive? share? a different forum area?

ill just put the link in here. admins, feel free to delete/move, etc the post as needed. If I messed up, my apologies, I just was not sure where to post this.

here is the link http://1drv.ms/1zSusdP

the file is called, flight2.apk

it requires a Bluetooth controller. You fly around, the a button is for turbo thrusters, the stick will pitch and roll.

I recommend you sue thrusters all the way while in the outside environment, and just go with regular speed while inside environments (the tube like structure is the only object you can go into), and if you do thrusters youll certainly smack into a wall.

again, my objective was to make a very large environment. if you get stuck in a wall, you have to remove the note 4 and put it back in.. again, I am just starting to tinker with my ideas... just wanted to put something out there to see if anyone wants to team up/help out/ or just criticize (constructively or destructively).

anyways, enjoy 🙂
