In the short to medium term future at minimum, they're two niche
products which will serve significantly different purposes with
significantly different technology. In the long-term, there might be
more crossover.

3D effect should be very good for things that are reasonably close, such
as a room you are in. It gets drama...
The tech is nowhere near for full immersion. There's a bunch of unproven
kick-starters out there which at best will give you some basic virtual
body control. And then a HMD which will be a consumer grade product, but
even that is still VR in its infa...
