PSA: A hacky attempt to alleviate the atrocity that is the audio in the Rift S
I just got my Rift S and while I had my expectations set low, nothing could have prepared me for the appalling audio in this thing. So here's this: while little can be done to alleviate the overall low volume without screwing up sound positionality, you can use your desktop speakers to fill in for the base this thing doesn't deliver. The only special requirement is a sound card that has equalization. Also, ideally, the equalization should be so that setting it to the minimum no sound should come out. I'm not getting there yet with my Realtek onboard, but I'll keep trying. To set this up, first go to the Oculus app, go to Devices, click the > to the right of where it says "Rift and Touch" and enable "Hear VR audio from computer". Then go to your sound card's control panel, and set all bands below 120 Hz to the maximum, and all above that to the minimum. Usually, that'd be the first three bars at max level and all others to the minimum. Then enter a VR game, and you'll have audio coming from both your headset and the speakers. You'll now have to adjust the volume in your desktop speakers in order to get things balanced between the headset and the speakers. In doing this we are taking advantage of the non-positionality of bass, which allows us to get this filler bass without screwing positional cues. It's a really crappy fix, and your mileage will certainly vary, but you lose nothing by trying, and the result may more bearable than the tinny nonexistent sound in the Rift S. Hope this helps someone. Cheers.893Views0likes2Comments
