How to fix Rift S USB reconnect issues

Even though I have a quest 2 I decided to get a Rift S to connect to my PC instead, I had problems where it required the USB port to be changed each time I turned on the PC. I read all the forums I could find including Reddit and nothing worked.

So my aim is for those people that are or will be using the Rift S, I found by going into the bios and turning off the option to keep power turned on to USB ports fixed the problem forever. Not all mother boards have this option and to test for myself I have a rechargeable battery in my mouse and before changing bios setting the mouse would be charging after the PC was turned of. After changing the bios setting my mouse does not stay charging when PC is off.

So to those of you that are still having this problem (very few now I guess) I hope it helps.

Thanks everyone for the kudos but alas the fix did not last, so back to the drawing board. After a lot of searching and playing around I concluded it was not actually the displayport not working or the USB 3 port itself but a lack of a good supply voltage.

During my search a lot of people were also eluding to not enough power and to use a powered USB hub but that did not work for me. I read somewhere that using USB-3.1 Gen 2 was preferred which I had on my system motherboard already and was already using - but I still went back to power issues.

I decided to buy an ASmedia USB-3.1 pce-e x4 card with power input via a sata power connector but it came with outdated drivers and still had problems. So back on the search trail I found a Dell driver that installed and bingo its now working perfectly. And today windows 11 update finally updated the drivers via windows update - which would not do when I installed the card - typical microsoft.

So even though I read in one post that ASmedia was not recommended (2 year old post) I still took the gamble and it paid off - so I hope this helps someone. I get no stuttering, black screen of death, steam VR and oculus (Meta) dash works fine, as soon as I pick up the headset I get the front blue light and get stuck in.

Yet another twist, yesterday the headset went into either black screen or black screen with 3 dots in the middle. After reinstalling everything and starting again nothing changed. This only happened after a driver update for the ASmedia USB card by windows update. I uninstalled the windows drivers and re-installed the DELL drivers and I have been playing all afternoon.

Typical microsoft - again.

Cya I hope this helps anyone still using the Rift S
