Pro controllers won't connect to quest 3 after v65 update

Piv0t

Ugh.. this just started happening.  I assume it is a problem that came with one of the updates to the headset?

After putting my Quest 3 headset to sleep after playing, the pro controllers no longer automatically connect when it wakes up.

The only thing that fixes it is restarted the headset.

It just so happens that I have two pairs of pro controllers.  This problem occurs with both.

Restarting controllers doesn't fix it.

Factory reset of controllers doesn't fix it.

Turning headset on/off doesn't fix it.

Have to restart the dumb headset every time I play now. 😞

Hello again everyone, I just got an update from the team saying the engineers were testing it on v66 and it was successful to not have the disconnecting issue. I know some of you are still on v65, but once v66 is at 100% rolled out, I hope your able to use the controllers again! 😊

In case you need it, here are the steps to factory reset your controllers only:

  • Right Controller: Hold A and Oculus buttons until the LED begins flashing red/white.
Left Controller: Hold X and Menu buttons until the LED begins flashing red/white.
  • Release the buttons immediately after the LED begins blinking red/white.
  • Perform a manual pairing and check if controller LED would flash blue and white to signal pairing state.
  • Once paired, controllers may take a while to update and stay unresponsive until they finish, and LED would be purple during the update.

If you still run into any issues, please feel free to contact support (@MetaQuestSupport) through private messages to have your warranty options looked into. If that is the case, I ask that you please submit a bug report as detailed as you can with what you are experiencing.

Hi, so my Quest Pro controllers (on Q3) were working perfectly on v63 and prior.  I held off on updating for a long time, as I heard there were problems on v64 and above.

Eventually I had to update to v65, and as I feared, I've been having problems.

Issue: When starting the headset, when you activate the controllers by pressing any face button, the headset recognises that the controllers are active by turning off hand tracking, but the 3D models of the controllers never appear and controller tracking doesn't start.  Occasionally I would get a 3DOF laser pointer from some unknown point in space, that moves unpredictably from controller motion.  The buttons on the controller are working correctly - I can hold the Meta button to recenter, for example.

This problem also occurs when you sleep the headset and wake it up again.

Expected: Previously, when activating the controllers, they would instantly appear (but in the wrong place and 3DOF) and then snap to the correct locations after one or two seconds.  6DOF tracking correctly begins at that point.

Workarounds: The only workaround that works for me, is to reboot the controllers by holding the Meta/Menu buttons, and then leave them untouched for about 2 or 3 minutes.  Then, activate them by pressing a button (eg. A/X).  If that doesn't work, repeating this one or two times usually ends up working.

Other stuff I tried, but didn't help:

- re-pairing the controllers

- factory reset the controllers

- clear all guardian data

- reboot the headset

- sleep/wake the headset

Meta, please fix this asap, I just want my controllers to work reliably like they did in earlier firmware.

Also, please add a debug log for the controllers that we can turn on in developer mode.  It seems QPro controllers are quite complex, we really need some logs so we can see what they're trying to do when they fail to start correctly.

I'm having the same problems on my Pro controllers after the update.

I am having the same exact problem.

i have a quest 3, with pro controllers. after the last update, the controllers keep not tracking. the only way to fix it is to re-pair the quest 3 controllers to the headset, then switch back to the pros, it might work for 20 min to an hour. then stop working.

their is plenty of light in the room. and there is no reflective surfaces. and the cameras are clean.

i've tried reconnecting the controllers, restarting them, and factory resetting them many times. i have also tried factory resetting the headset. i'm not opted into the PTC. and i cannot stand the occlusion of the Q3 controllers... i already know the answer but is there a way to roll back firmware on the headset? or at least do something

Hey there @admiralzeechforever! We definitely want for you to be able to enjoy your time in VR, and that is hard if your controllers are having trouble tracking! Thanks for letting us know what troubleshooting steps that you have tried so far, that helps a lot to narrow down the potential causes. One thing that can cause the symptoms that you are seeing is the environment you are playing in. If your space has mirrors, christmas lights, LED strips, sources of infrared light, or similar, that can confuse the tracking. We would recommend trying the headset in a bright indoor area that is free of numerous small pinpoint light sources.

If the issue continues under ideal conditions, the best avenue to get this reported to the developers is by submitting a bug report through the headset or Oculus mobile app. This will get your information directly to the people who can try to replicate the issue and get to working on a fix!

hi @Piv0t

Unfortunately that does seem to be a current bug as I have experienced the same. The only way around this is to go back to the Quest 3 controllers for now.

If you are on the PTC and you really want to use the pro controllers you could revert back to the public release. Unfortunately this would require a factory reset.

Hope this helps

Thanks for confirming.  At least I can stop trying to find a solution for now.  Do you know if the issue has been reported as a bug to the appropriate channel?

I also use Pro controllers with the Quest 3.

I am having a different problem where the pro controllers won't reconnect to the headset unless I reboot the headset.  Are you not having that issue?

I play Pickleball One and Eleven Table tennis mostly and my controllers have been tracking fine in those games.  I haven't repaired my Quest 3 controllers in several weeks. I am hesitant to make any suggestions given the number of things you have already tried though.  Wonder what the difference between what you are seeing and what I am seeing is.

Hey y'all! just wanted to jump in on this to get the issue looked into.

So that I may have the proper details, can y'all let me know of the following:

  • Which headset you're using:
  • Are you enrolled in the PTC?
  • Software Version Meta Quest Mobile App:
  • Software Version Meta Quest Headset:
    • The full version like this "65.0.0.xxx.xxxxx".
  • Any other workarounds?
  • Confirmation of Bug Report submitted.
  • Do these controller Factory Reset steps help:
    • Right Controller: Hold A and Oculus buttons until the LED begins flashing red/white.
Left Controller: Hold X and Menu buttons until the LED begins flashing red/white.
    • Release the buttons immediately after the LED begins blinking red/white.
    • Perform a manual pairing and check if controller LED would flash blue and white to signal pairing state.
    • Once paired, controllers may take a while to update and stay unresponsive until they finish, and LED would be purple during the update.

I hope to hear from you all!

Update: The team is informed and have already began looking into this. Any news I received will be notified in this thread.
