Quest 2 controllers showing as gen 1 in Steam VR

When I play games via steam VR (for example Payday 2), the controllers show up in the in game menu and the steam menu as the 1st Gen Oculus Touch Controllers, is there a way to make Steam Vr show the correct controllers. If I play VR games not via Steam Vr then the correct controllers show. This seems to happen whether I use Airlink or Virtual Desktop.

The controllers work, they just don't show as the correct controllers, ie they are showing as 1st Gen Oculus Touch Controllers. The solution above seems to be related to getting the controllers to work in the first place.

to be fair this is a steam problem not an oculus problem.  Mine have always shown as the touch controllers in steamVR and some games.  other games they will show as the quest 2 controllers. steam needs to update their graphical representation in the API.  it shouldnt affect functionality and never has for me so I doubt they consider this priority.  just wanted to provide some insight.
