Windows 11: Oculus Games Crash but SteamVR works

DiamondQ

So, I recently got a new computer, which, of course, comes pre-loaded with Windows 11. Moving my Rift S over, and I found that while I can launch all the Oculus Store based games, they all crash moments after loading (presumably right as the VR portions kick in). That said, all my SteamVR based games work fine.

Oculus support indicated that there's nothing they can do until Windows 11 is supported by Oculus.

Well that sucks.

Same here buddy! Windows 11 have been in the market for 6 months. Obviously, this was going to happen. Did they at least say when a new version is going to be released?

The funny thing is that everything was working until yesterday when a new Windows 11 update was released. My game started crashing right away!

Just because your new pc came loaded with win11 doesn’t mean you can’t go to Win10.  Sometimes you can do a simple rollback, sometimes you need a clean install.  A bit of google research will explain your options.  Win10 and win11 share the same product key so you can always upgrade later.  Up to you to decide what’s best.

Hey everyone! We are working to get Windows 11 supported, however, we currently have not been able finalize an update to support Windows 11. With the new updates that roll out for Windows 11, it will take us some time to get this update finalized and ready for the public. We are hoping to have the update out soon, and a good way to check for updates would be to repair your Oculus PC software often to get the update when it is ready! Steps for performing a repair on the Oculus PC software can be found below:

  1. Go to www.oculus.com/setup and click Download Oculus Rift software.
  2. Select Repair.
    • If Windows asks you if you’re sure you want to open this file, click Yes.
    • If Windows Defender prompts Windows protected your PC, click More info and then click Run anyway.
    • If your antivirus software restricts the file from opening, temporarily disable your AV and continue.
    • Please remember to re-enable your antivirus software once you've completed the repair.
  3. Allow the repair process to run, download and install.
  4. Launch the Oculus app.

Thank you very much for everyone's extended patience! We hope to have this update rolled out soon!

Hi, has an update rolled out yet for Windows 11 with the issue as it’s now July and I’m still experiencing this problem?

Hey there @david.ku.8

A bit of good news, we came out with a beta release for Windows 11 when we released our v41 update, so it's still in the works. We’ve improved performance and stability for using Link and Air Link with Windows 11 systems, the console window workaround is no longer required!

We hope that with more time we'll finally be able to fully support Windows 11 so we can meet the needs of users like you in VR!

The odd thing with this is when you use SteamVR with an Oculus headset, it actually runs on top of the Oculus SDK, making SteamVR effectively an Oculus game.

Running a SteamVR game is really running a game inside of a game.

So whatever is causing Oculus games to crash on Win11 is probably related to the store (SteamVR is an "unknown source" game, so it doesn't touch the store part of the Oculus software).

Not that this helps anyone in this thread, just a point of interest.

Then why games running from the Oculus Rift program crush but running from Steam don’t? Can’t be all the games but all of them crush within a few minutes after you start them. It just doesn’t make sense.

To be more specific, both Oculus store games and SteamVR games end up running on the Oculus SDK (doing the actual VR stuff, headset support, etc), but there's another one, the Platform SDK, that only Oculus games would use since Steam has their own equivalent. It does checks you own the game, multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, user info, friends, etc.

So it's possible the platform sdk is at fault. None of that is actually VR related. SteamVR itself has none of that, it's Steam that does the equivalent.
