Editorial - Developing on Oculus under new Conditions

A well thought out editorial on the realities and issues, (as well as some of the get arounds), for developing on the Oculus suite of platforms following the Facebook log in announcement:

All you need to know about developing and sideloading on Quest under the new Facebook account policy

So, a Test User account is the equivalent to a sandbox account.  FB could decide to "exile" non-conformists (by mutual consent of course) to this kind of account.

Agree, when I scanned that in the Dev Notes, and Tony pointed that out, I thought that this will be the "purgatory" that many questionable users will be located within.

The key issue is for users that have extensive amounts of software and material on an account that is targeted to be blocked. Fb will want to avoid off handed blocking as they will be liable to possible dispute arbitration - so a "naughty step" will be a good solution.

Now some posters are suggesting that the January 2023 date could also see the "evaluation" of software retained in a account, so like Steam, looking for users with modd'ed or illegal software retained in their account, so to activate you would have to have the Fb ID in place - seems an end to ReViVE?

Personally, I think that by 2023 the percentage of pre-October users with working Quest, Go, Rigt-S, CV1 left will be too minuscule for FB to care about.  Sort of like how Apple doesn't care anymore if you jailbreak your iPhone 3.

Thanks for this point @wuzp - I had been thinking on the timing. January 2023, why was that ringing a bell? And it hit me, the previous Facebook keynote, and the time period to achieve the 1-billion users in VR. That date set by the head of the company linked to a point now where the traditional VR community will have to "assimilate" into the Fb ID policy.

I wonder what offer will be made to the Fb community that month to try and ensure that that milestone is met and crushed? While this mark a brand new day for all Facebook-users to jump into VR?

At this point, the clock is ticking - only 862-days (74,478,800-seconds) to enjoy the current level of CV1, Rift-S and Quest engagement - then in 20,688-hours we will see a brand new VR world (more likely Mixed Reality) that will be ushered in by Fb - and to be frank, I wonder if we will be on this forum to enjoy/endure that?

Excellent summation showing valid arguments for both sides of the coin here.

My guy feeling is that this forum will stick around - but it will be replace by a new system. How it will look and function I do not know yet - but I have a feeling it will be under striker goals and rules. Want to talk bad about FB - get ready to be shutdown by all users and ban right out possibility. Im sure 100% though that we will still have good convos and be able to talk about other VR related topics or even other headsets. The only downside is we will have a lot of white-knighting and FB zealots come in and defend FB decision no matter what.

When they come out with ads in games - people will defend it saying mobile has ads.
When they come out with ads in the store - people will say other websites have it
When they come out with ads you have to watch - people will say it off sets the cost
When they start banning people for making fake accounts - they will say you should've just link your account
etc etc.... then when something finally breaks - they will say - its ok - we can just do xx...

You mean like the Developers Forum???  We know developers hide "somewhere," but not "here."  I forgot who pointed it out, in that TL;DR FB account tantrum mega-thread, but Reddit and Discord dwarfs these Oculus sponsored forums.
