Feel free to add your favorites - these are some of my "most wanted" VR games in 2024!

The most interesting games may be the surprises we get through the year. In early 2023, I had no idea we'd get The 7th Guest VR or Arizona Sunshine 2 🙂 Can't wait for the surprises in 2024! 🙂

After all these years, it really is happening - devs just released a playable demo of Pirates VR - Jolly Roger:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1443620/Pirates_VR_Jolly_Roger/

Unfortunately, it may not work well with most hmds - Index had much latency on movements. Then to my great surprise, I found out that demo supports native Oculus drivers, does not even need OpenXR.

Seems to me this game has started its development in the great old Rift times 🙂

With an oc'ed RTX 3090, I'm down to ss 1.5 for solid 90 fps with the Rift CV1, but using Ultra settings. You need 1:1 fps:hz for optimal head tracking, like 90 fps in 90 Hz. Going much beyond 12 million pixels per frame combining both eyes may be too much for an RTX 3090 to handle. This means the performance is not good, but there may a great VR game hidden here.

I greatly enjoyed the game with the Rift CV1 - and I'm also using Rift CV1 for MADiSON VR and OVRDark anyway, no big deal adding another CV1 game, lol:

Really starting to think 2024 is becoming a much greater year for PCVR than I thought possible.

EXOCars is coming with VR support August 15 - it looks quite good/great/amazing if the trailer represents VR quality 🙂

The game can be wishlisted here:

Infinite Inside arrives July 12:

It's probably a Quest port, but the game also arrives for PSVR2. So chances are the devs have enhanced the high-end PCVR and PSVR2 versions compared to the extremely low-end Vision Pro and Quest versions 🤞 Vision Pro really is a giant red flag for this game, but let's see some reviews of the PCVR version first.

I'm quite fond of the Pirates VR - Jolly Roger demo, and it's really an Oculus exclusive - it does not work correctly unless you use the old Oculus drivers. I finally got the key to the gate, got a lamp - and check out the nice real-time lighting in the cave:

OculusScreenshot1719239993.JPG

This game will be a massive failure if devs do not get the performance right using SteamVR drivers - but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The game does look much better with oled than lcd, btw - so a perfect game for Rift CV1 and Quest 1 PCVR users.

Interestingly, the playable demo was just updated on Steam today - and now it works perfectly using SteamVR. Especially motion smoothing seems flawless, 40 fps really felt like 80. I was able to play using Index res 300% (high res is needed to reduce the blur from temporal antialiasing), but only thanks to motion smoothing.

This could be another favorite game for 2024 - compared to Bootstrap Island graphics are similar, but Jolly Roger is much less stressful, and more a fun adventure trying to be a pirate and find treasure.

Riven took me by surprise - it feels like a new reference for PCVR adventure games. Ratings are sky-high on Steam with 94% average based on 400 ratings. I've created a thread for the game, as it deserves:

https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/VR-Experiences/Riven-has-launched-with-VR-support-and-has-94-p...

In the Quest Store, Riven only has 47 ratings and an 84% average rating, but Riven was never properly designed for very slow phone gpus (like Adreno 740 in Quest 3 with only 2 tflops) - as written by Scott Hayden on Road To VR:

"It also seems Cyan is throwing the entire toolbox of Quest performance tricks at you at all times, including what feels like always-on asynchronous spacewarp and glaringly obvious fixed foveated rendering. Since it was primarily developed for the flatscreen PC crowd, the PC VR version is a fair bit ahead of the Quest 3 native in terms of visuals."

Source:  https://www.roadtovr.com/riven-review-quest-2-3-steam-vr/

The PCVR version being a "fair bit ahead" may be the understatement of the decade; PCVR is lightyears ahead of Quest standalone in Riven. Riven is as high-end as you can get. Some are even whining about Cyan pushing the borders of gaming worlds too much with Riven - causing PC gpus to overheat, lol:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/1712350/discussions/0/6513974436470055142/

I've had no such overheating issues with the RTX 3090 (oc'ed and pushing about 40 tflops), but surely an RTX 4090 (84 tflops) is not wasted on Riven - not even an RTX 5090 Ti when it arrives 😎 🤓

The first post in this thread was starting to look like a mess with the dates and order of presented games. I just fixed everything - now the games appear in the order these launched or are expected to launch.

Also we did get some great surprises - like Riven VR and Blade & Sorcery, I've included those games. Especially since the first post may serve as a list of games PCVR enthusiasts should not miss out on.

Devs have shown how they so far enhanced Max Mustard for PSVR2 - and I expect the PCVR version to be even better (click to enlarge the image):

ax4zyu1yvl8d1.JPG

Note the transparent water, much more detailed water waves, dynamic shadows and higher texture res. According to devs:

"This comparison to the Quest visuals highlights upgraded water shader, which has improved reflections and depth. Other improvements include improved general shaders, real-time shadows, higher-resolution textures and lightmaps, and post-processing effects. This is a work in progress and we hope to keep these visual upgrades in the final version of the game on PSVR2!"

Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/PSVR/comments/1dnrzpb/your_first_look_at_max_mustard_running_on_psvr2/

With the poly levels (geometry) still matching the low-end Quest version, surely this game can never be the new AstroBot or close, but the enhancements do look nice.

Two delays

For those wondering about Tomb Explorer, which was expected to launch July 9 - the game has been postponed to July 26, more info here:

This is an exclusive PCVR game and is truly a high-end VR experience. I'd rather have the devs taking the time they need instead of releasing a poor quality game. I think at least some of these screenshots are new:

Probably the closest thing to Tomb Raider VR we've ever seen.

Another delay is Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate being pushed about a month to October 30 - and the devs just released a new deep dive trailer:

I think October 31 is the PSVR2 release, on Steam is says October 30. Find the game here:
