Meta Quest build v56 release notes

These features and enhancements will become available starting the week of July 24, 2023 and will be pushed to Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2 headsets.

Livestream to Facebook

If you have your Facebook account in the same Accounts Center as your Meta account, you can now livestream from VR to Facebook by selecting Start Livestream from  Camera on the universal menu.

  • This feature is launching as an experiment and may not be available to everyone.

Closed captions

We’re adding system level closed captioning for audio from 2D apps, videos, and other media. You can turn closed captions on by going to Accessibility in Settings and selecting Hearing, then Live Captions.

Note: At this time, closed captioning on Quest does not capture speech from other players.

Customize controller button mapping

You can now customize the button mapping on your Touch controllers to any layout you prefer by going to Accessibility in Settings and selecting Mobility, then Re-map Controllers.

Note: Some apps may still refer to the default button mapping.

Automatically power headset to update

To make it easier to get into the action when you put on your headset, we’re adding the ability to keep your headset software and apps updated when your headset is powered off and charging. Your headset will briefly power on to apply available app updates and power off when updates are complete. You may hear your headset’s fans during this process.

Your microphone and cameras will always remain off until you put your headset on and press the power button. You can control this feature from Software Updates in System Settings.

  • This will be rolling out gradually.

Invite to apps

You can now invite people to join you in an app from your followers list in People as well as from chats and groups.

Default microphone behavior when recording

You can now select a default option for whether or not you want your microphone audio to be included when recording a video by going to Camera in System Settings and selecting the toggle next to Include Mic Audio.

Swipe typing on virtual keyboard

We’re adding the ability to swipe to type using the virtual keyboard. You can enable this feature from Experimental in Settings.

Notification improvements

We’ve made a number of changes to notifications allowing you to better control your VR experience.

  • You can now complete more actions from notifications by selecting
  • Multiple notifications from the same source will now be grouped together for easier management

Low battery warning

Having your headset run out of battery in the middle of a session is no fun at all. That’s why we’re making it easier for you to know when your battery is running low while you’re in an immersive experience with a new and improved low battery warning notification.

Battery level on power off screen

You’ll now see your battery level on the power off screen with a reminder to charge your headset so that it’s ready to go for your next session in VR.

Local Dimming  (Meta Quest Pro only)

We’re adding the ability to enable Local Dimming across all apps on Meta Quest Pro to reduce screen brightness. You can enable this feature from Experimental in Settings.

Hand tracking 2.2

Hand Tracking 2.2 includes a number of enhancements, including:

  • Up to 40% latency reduction in typical usage and up to 75% during fast movement resulting in more responsive Hands experiences.
  • Fast Motion Mode (FMM) provides improved tracking of fast hand movements common in fitness and rhythm apps.

quest2 updated to 56.0.0.115 and I found one bug. I played through VD with a maximum item of 120 hz in the game I'm on observation duty 3, the game is not resource intensive because it works fine on my rtx 4080. After about 10 minutes of the game, the image turned black for a couple of frames, then it appeared but it began to twitch a lot, if you move horizontally, then the image ghosting effect occurs like in 3D TVs, the game does not lag and does not slow down, but everything doubles exactly like that and after about 10 minutes the image blinked black again and everything became normal. I'm sure the problem is in the firmware, because. this has never happened before and there have been no changes to my PC. Also, to the same extent, there are white ripples in PC games as it was on firmware 54. The helmet also began to start with brakes, i.e. the meta logo screen loads quickly, and goes quickly to the Oculus home, but within about a minute of going to the home, the image freezes for half a second a few times, making me very dizzy. Previously, a helmet on firmware 54 took longer to load, but when I got home everything worked smoothly and stably, but here it slows down in the house

How do I get automatic notifications of what updates contain and when they're being released, please, either email Facebook notifications, whatever.

Thanks

Hands are tracked but there's now a persistent wobbliness to their motion in VR. Like there's no filtering. It's the same in different rooms and different lighting conditions.

Is this the same for everyone?

Hi. by "subtitles" does Meta mean only in the original language or is there also real-time translation?

Sounds good. I would still like a power level overlay similar to the Move overlay that can be on-screen. And it would be better if the the low level warning was set to 20% rather than ~15%.

tAzMaNiAc73  This gets asked about a zillion times, lol!  You can't force it to update, it's rolled out at different times in different places.  You can kinda force it if you enroll into the Quest Beta program;

https://www.meta.com/en-gb/help/quest/articles/headsets-and-accessories/using-your-headset/quest-ptc/

i9 13900K water cooled, RTX4090, Z790 MB w/wifi6e, 64Gb 6400 ram, 2x2TB SSD, 1000W PSU, Win 11, QPro, Q3, w/Link and Air Link, Vive Pro1 with 2x2.0 base stations, Etsy lens mod and Index Controllers

This "wave enrollment" is a joke and destroys the community.
What's the sense about getting the update more than a month later than others?
Also a community mod has to force the devs to "release" the previous firmware to all?

And what's the sense about releasing a firmware which has may bugs in PTC to the public?
Sorry, getting the "new" firmware after anouncing the "new new" one is NONSENSE!

MetaQuest 2 is an awesome product, with my main problems always being around the app & system update experience. The power-off app update improvements in v55 were a nice band-aid to the missing auto-app updating experience. The v56 update should bring app updating on par with iPhone/XBox.

However, the MQ System Update process is still quite frustrating compared to products like iPhone/XBox.

1) Having 30 numbers after the version adds no value to users.  Why not just do v56.1 at most and distinguish between PTC & Official.

2) I've never seen a notification that a system update is ready or complete.  I always have to manually check.  Maybe I need to keep my MetaQuest2 plugged in and in sleep.  I hope that MQ will eventually automatically show a pop-up showing the release notes and new features.

3) Rolling release where the MQ sm pages announce a new update with some amazing features.  Then users must check every day for multiple weeks to only see "No updates".

4) I just found this FAQ. It says that rolling updates typically come out a few days of the release.  In this case, the release was supposed to happen on July 24th. If a week goes by and it hasn't been pushed to everyone, it would be helpful if the Community Admin post updated with post with the reason for the delayed rollout.
