Meta Quest build v56 release notes

These features and enhancements will become available starting the week of July 24, 2023 and will be pushed to Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2 headsets.

Livestream to Facebook

If you have your Facebook account in the same Accounts Center as your Meta account, you can now livestream from VR to Facebook by selecting Start Livestream from  Camera on the universal menu.

  • This feature is launching as an experiment and may not be available to everyone.

Closed captions

We’re adding system level closed captioning for audio from 2D apps, videos, and other media. You can turn closed captions on by going to Accessibility in Settings and selecting Hearing, then Live Captions.

Note: At this time, closed captioning on Quest does not capture speech from other players.

Customize controller button mapping

You can now customize the button mapping on your Touch controllers to any layout you prefer by going to Accessibility in Settings and selecting Mobility, then Re-map Controllers.

Note: Some apps may still refer to the default button mapping.

Automatically power headset to update

To make it easier to get into the action when you put on your headset, we’re adding the ability to keep your headset software and apps updated when your headset is powered off and charging. Your headset will briefly power on to apply available app updates and power off when updates are complete. You may hear your headset’s fans during this process.

Your microphone and cameras will always remain off until you put your headset on and press the power button. You can control this feature from Software Updates in System Settings.

  • This will be rolling out gradually.

Invite to apps

You can now invite people to join you in an app from your followers list in People as well as from chats and groups.

Default microphone behavior when recording

You can now select a default option for whether or not you want your microphone audio to be included when recording a video by going to Camera in System Settings and selecting the toggle next to Include Mic Audio.

Swipe typing on virtual keyboard

We’re adding the ability to swipe to type using the virtual keyboard. You can enable this feature from Experimental in Settings.

Notification improvements

We’ve made a number of changes to notifications allowing you to better control your VR experience.

  • You can now complete more actions from notifications by selecting
  • Multiple notifications from the same source will now be grouped together for easier management

Low battery warning

Having your headset run out of battery in the middle of a session is no fun at all. That’s why we’re making it easier for you to know when your battery is running low while you’re in an immersive experience with a new and improved low battery warning notification.

Battery level on power off screen

You’ll now see your battery level on the power off screen with a reminder to charge your headset so that it’s ready to go for your next session in VR.

Local Dimming  (Meta Quest Pro only)

We’re adding the ability to enable Local Dimming across all apps on Meta Quest Pro to reduce screen brightness. You can enable this feature from Experimental in Settings.

Hand tracking 2.2

Hand Tracking 2.2 includes a number of enhancements, including:

  • Up to 40% latency reduction in typical usage and up to 75% during fast movement resulting in more responsive Hands experiences.
  • Fast Motion Mode (FMM) provides improved tracking of fast hand movements common in fitness and rhythm apps.

Buetigame  I assumed that v56ptc was the same as v56 final.  That’s why I also posted the QPro version numbers so those on final can compare notes.  I intend to remain on PTC so when the next version (v47ptc?) is issued I’ll move to that section.  I hope that’s ok with you mate.  Thanks

Hi TomCgcmfc I'm also on PTC and I received your same version.
The device just works smoothly and features swipe typing feature.
For all the rest of the functions such as live captions and controller remapping not even the shadow. Visually the hand movements seem faster and smoother but I'm not in a position to confirm if hand tracking 2.2 has actually been implemented.

What annoys me is that Meta asks PTC members to be proactive, to report saying and doing...., but almost a month after the announcement of the release of stable v56 and therefore at the gates of the release of v57 ptc, is still releasing versions, evidently beta and incomplete, of v56.
For this I hope that those who are still patiently waiting for the final version of v56 find it complete and above all free of bugs on the new functions because those who are part of the PTC have not been physically put in a position to test ANYTHING that is reported in the notes of release.

can we please stop mentioning or bringing PTC related into this official final release topic to avoid confusion.

every time there is an update / new comments in here / it will trigger a new email sent to subscribers of this topic and it has been rather annoying. Please update pertaining to the topic which is the final version of 56.

REDDDDY  Sorry but I don’t see what’s so confusing mate?  Once a final version has been issued it makes more sense to me to consolidate posts on the final version thread.  Both should be the same albeit there can always be different timing of rollouts.

I do think it’s best to declare version details so you can compare apples to apples, and to state if you are PTC, including public beta with the oculus desktop app.

If you have major problems with this then maybe report this to the Forum moderators and see what they think.  Thanks mate and cheers.

I got another v56 update earlier today on both my QPro and Q2 (56.0.0.165.656) and all seems to work fine.  I can't say that I notice any differences.  This is actually v56ptc btw and I'm also on the oculus desktop app public beta (56.0.0.109.155) which remained the same.

Anyone on the v56 non-ptc (final) versions might want to check to see if they are also getting these versions rolled out as well.  While there wasn't anything I could see anything different, like always, your results may vary, lol!  Cheers.

TomCgcmfc

I didn't even got the final version of v56... so are you sure, that v56 final and v56 PTC is the same?
Confirming that "mixed" discussions are confusing...

Why don't you post at PTC v56 Release Un-Megathread - Meta Community Forums - 1065698 (atmeta.com)?

All: Does everyone else got the final (not the PTC!) v56 firmware?

Buetigame   The confusing bit is that users can’t be bothered to post current version details (56.0.0.xxx.xxx).

In the past on this forum PTC threads were suspended once the official Final release started rolling out.  This hasn’t happened for a while. Maybe @Ryanality can communicate why this no longer happens.

In any case it seems pretty clear as mud to me, lol!

Hey TomCgcmfc, v56 is in an odd place right now because we're still putting out new PTC builds and the official release was paused pending resolution of a few bugs. I believe the plan is to complete the rollout of v56 within the next couple days however and then to roll PTC on to v57. But I'll update everyone when that happens.

Ryanality  All release note threads have been odd since these were turned into blog format.  This makes it very difficult to keep up to date on what’s happening with ptc and so-called final versions.  It also changes the posting order from the latest post being up front to being buried at the last page.  I understand your reasoning of trying to only use blogs to pass on release notes and then rely on users to open separate threads concerning any particular comment or bugs.  How’s that working for you, lol!

Hey everyone, I've just gotten word that the latest build of v56 is now available for all Quest 2 and Quest Pro devices. This build has some fixes for some issues we've been working on, but a few more are still have work being done.
