Meta Quest v55 Release Notes

These features and enhancements will become available starting the week of June 21st, 2023 and will be rolling out to Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2 headsets.

Quest performance improvements

We’re continuing to move VR forward by pushing the boundaries of what Quest Pro and Quest 2 are capable of. With v55, we’re enabling higher clock speeds for the CPU and GPU for all Quest Pro and Quest 2 headsets, giving you smoother gameplay and a more responsive UI. This update also adds more power for developers to take advantage of for both existing and upcoming apps.

These performance improvements include:

  • Up to 26% increase in CPU speed for Quest Pro and Quest 2
  • Up to 19% increase in GPU for Quest 2
  • Up to 11% increase in GPU for Quest Pro

Passcode

We’re adding the ability to use a passcode to unlock your device, which will work like the unlock pattern. As this feature gradually rolls out, you’ll be able to set up a numerical passcode between 4 and 12 characters to unlock your device, enter saved passwords, and more. You’ll be able to manage your passcode from Security in Settings.

Messenger in VR

We’re updating the Messenger experience in VR to help you connect and make new friends while in the metaverse. With v55, we’re bringing the Messenger app, including messaging and audio calling to VR, so you can hang out with those who matter most regardless of which device they use.

People you follow are online indicator

You’ll now see a green circle on the People tab in the universal menu to help you know when people you follow are online.

Explore redesign

We’re gradually rolling out an experimental design with new content for the default landing page in VR, Explore, so you can effortlessly engage with your communities, compelling entertainment, and immersive experiences.

A few of the Explore changes we’re experimenting with include:

  • New layout formats
  • Reels in VR
    • Reels in VR will only be shown to users who have a Facebook or Instagram account in the same Accounts Center as their Meta account
  • Meta Avatars Store
  • Meta Horizon Worlds featured worlds
  • Media content from Peacock, YouTube VR, Pluto TV and Xtadium

Easier avatar editing in real-time

We made it easier to travel to the mirror in your Horizon Home to edit your avatar. With just one click on the mirror, you will be transported and ready to view real-time edits to your avatar in an optimal position.

  • This will be rolling out gradually.

Eye tracking improvements

We’ve improved eye tracking on Quest Pro to make it more accurate across a broader field of view and during expressions like winking. For the most accurate eye tracking, you can always recalibrate by going to Movement Tracking in Settings, then Eye tracking, then Calibrate eye tracking.

Use hands on notifications

We’re gradually rolling out a new way to interact with notifications in VR using your hands. With hand tracking turned on, you’ll be able to tap on icons or buttons, or swipe to dismiss a notification.

New virtual environments

We’re releasing two new virtual environments:

  • Futurescape: As featured in this year’s Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, Futurescape combines futurism with the beauty and tranquility of nature. You can try out this new environment by going to Personalization in Settings.

  • The Great Sand Sea: Available for download to all Meta Quest users who pre-ordered Asgard’s Wrath 2, The Great Sand Sea is a large, free roaming, living world that allows you to immerse yourself in the mysterious sands of a vast desert landscape in VR. Once you pre-order Asgard’s Wrath 2, you can download this new Home environment from the Meta Quest app or directly from your Meta Quest headset and then launch the environment from the Home screen.

Browser multi-touch support

Quest Browser now has multi-touch gesture support, allowing you to use Touch controllers or your hands to zoom in, zoom out, or interact with other web elements.

These performance improvements include:

  • Up to 26% increase in CPU speed for Quest Pro and Quest 2
  • Up to 19% increase in GPU for Quest 2
  • Up to 11% increase in GPU for Quest Pro

That sounds good. Two questions:

  1. How much will this affect battery run time?
  2. Is this solely of benefit for apps running within the headset or will it be of benefit to apps running over Link? If of benefit to apps running over the Link, how?

Thanks.

Is there any chance you could either post full runtime/os versions on these Release threads so people who are on PTC and want to opt out of it once a full public version is released can opt out of PTC without factory resetting the headset?  Or ad an option in the software to specify if OS is PTC or Not PTC.

ex: I am on PTC and not used headset for 3-4 days now, if I'm trying to use it now and an update comes up I won't know if it's the Full Public release or still a PTC update, therefore opting out of PTC without knowing if I should expect a factory reset after is not convenient.

Are the performance boosts going to fix the network lag issue? Our game is becoming unplayable and I am getting some angry emails from our players.

Will this update be pushed to active air link & virtual desktop users as a priority, considering the last update totally ruined the experience due to the wifi bug?

Does this fix airlink/overall networking issues, which you guys have ruined? or should we rather skip the quest 3 and rather buy different headsets and accept that once more you've ruined what little user-trust you guys have left?

I'm only gonna be blunt and honest, not polite. fixing the networking issues should be a massive priority... *SHOULD* be.

Great news for you on that Shadewing, the engineering team has been hard at work tracking down issues causing lag and stuttering with Air Link. There's a fix rolling out to headsets on v54 and v55 which should make some major improvements for anyone running into the issues they've been working on. Please reboot your headset to make sure that update hits and installs, it may not be visible as an update, and may not change your build number if you're on v54.

The v55 build to look for is 5004863.3140.330 or higher which is out in PTC and should be heading to people gradually as the rollout window expands.

At this time, any update is appreciated, so thanks for that update, man.

I'll keep an eye out for the update, if I can see it. I really just hope that it fixes airlink's network issues for me, because pcvr is my main driver and I have zero interest in standalone.

hello. good job.

In full screen mode of the internet browser, is there a way to remove the bottom bar? Before it was removed automatically, after a few seconds.

Greetings

Why didn't you increase the performance earlier and why are there numbers with "up to"? Will we find out tomorrow that you can increase gpu/cpu clock speed even more?

Got a small update yesterday, and once again the App Library is a frustrating user experience. Why is that so hard to get right? The almost universal complaint is that people want easier control of filtering, with an option to decide their own default filter (many people want to see “Installed” rather than “All” as the default, for example). Instead, the decision was made to take the filter options away from the main library page and hide it in Search. (Does anyone actually use Search in their own library??)

it’s not the end of the world, but it’s a couple extra clicks every time I want to go to, say, Unknown Sources.

And what’s the point now of the default setting for app filtering in Settings/Personalization? I have that set to Unknown sources/Recent, but whenever I open the app search to get to the filters section, it defaults to All and A to Z. If it doesn’t use my default preference even in the Search/Filters section, what is it for??

The App Library used to be perfectly useable a couple years ago. It had filter options right there, and when you set it, it remembered your setting and kept it applied until you next changed it. Easy, predictable, and hassle-free. I assume it was changed out of fear of people not finding their newly-purchased app because their library filter was set to Installed, but there must be a better way to handle that case than to take all personalization away from everyone.

Sorry for the rant, and thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Thanks for the TED talk! I've shared it with the team that owns that part of the app for you! Don't forget that if you or anyone else has feedback about the Mobile App Store or the VR App Store we're looking for suggestions in the ideas of the month board!

Is Horizonverse also your domain ?

Hey Ryan, I was wanting to share a few things about the Quest browser.

Some features:

  • Why can't I use 2D PWA apps with any website? It shouldn't be an opt in thing, that makes it harder for the end user. Chrome does this and it shouldn't be difficult to implement, unless I'm missing something
  • Takeover of physical keyboard and mouse - a niche feature but nice to have for some online experiences. Not sure if this is like an underlying Android problem or system issue but I can't play things like Krunker with the mouse.
  • Custom start page / making the start page more customizable - Pleaase let me add bookmarks to the start page! I know it's kind of a weird things to ask but it's another click to the bookmark menu that adds up over time.
  • Tab groups and tab history - Would be a real productivity booster to be able to at least reopen recently closed windows or have groups of tabs

Some bugs and fixes:

  • Fix for "This browser isn't supported" (Finding this on Google Docs, Slides etc.) I'm not sure if this is a platform bug or an app bug but it bothers me 😂
  • Mouse or hand tracking pointer will sometimes fail to click on the correct target - general instability with mouse scrolling and clicking
  • Not sure if this is a Quest power issue but the Speedometer scores are strangely low - performance issues in some sites
  • Smooth scroll on physical mice needs improvements

Thanks for listening to MY TED talk. I'm an avid Quest Browser user for everything from media to my work, and I'd love to see these fixes and improvements! I know as a niche user it may be a lot to ask but I'd be so jazzed if you could send this report to the team!

I forgot a few things - can't reopen recently closed tabs with Ctrl + Shift + T, that's a game changer!  Also, I left out something very important - my hand tracking sometimes clicks when I'm typing and unfocuses the text field I'm typing in. I typed this whole thing on the headset with a physical keyboard and let me tell you - it's the most annoying feeling when you're typing a large document and your hand tracking accidentally takes you to another site - thinking you may have lost all your work!

Was really hoping to see a solution for the artifacting, or at the VERY least an acknowledgement of the issue. For a platform built for immersion, such a glaring flaw kinda defeats the entire purpose. Instead it seems to be another update adding features I never asked for instead of fixes for substantial bugs introduced in the process of adding said inane features. I didn't buy a Quest to screw around in a half baked virtual bedroom, I bought it to larp with a toaster strapped to my face. Please make the toaster work as advertised.
