Meta Quest v55 Release Notes

These features and enhancements will become available starting the week of June 21st, 2023 and will be rolling out to Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2 headsets.

Quest performance improvements

We’re continuing to move VR forward by pushing the boundaries of what Quest Pro and Quest 2 are capable of. With v55, we’re enabling higher clock speeds for the CPU and GPU for all Quest Pro and Quest 2 headsets, giving you smoother gameplay and a more responsive UI. This update also adds more power for developers to take advantage of for both existing and upcoming apps.

These performance improvements include:

  • Up to 26% increase in CPU speed for Quest Pro and Quest 2
  • Up to 19% increase in GPU for Quest 2
  • Up to 11% increase in GPU for Quest Pro

Passcode

We’re adding the ability to use a passcode to unlock your device, which will work like the unlock pattern. As this feature gradually rolls out, you’ll be able to set up a numerical passcode between 4 and 12 characters to unlock your device, enter saved passwords, and more. You’ll be able to manage your passcode from Security in Settings.

Messenger in VR

We’re updating the Messenger experience in VR to help you connect and make new friends while in the metaverse. With v55, we’re bringing the Messenger app, including messaging and audio calling to VR, so you can hang out with those who matter most regardless of which device they use.

People you follow are online indicator

You’ll now see a green circle on the People tab in the universal menu to help you know when people you follow are online.

Explore redesign

We’re gradually rolling out an experimental design with new content for the default landing page in VR, Explore, so you can effortlessly engage with your communities, compelling entertainment, and immersive experiences.

A few of the Explore changes we’re experimenting with include:

  • New layout formats
  • Reels in VR
    • Reels in VR will only be shown to users who have a Facebook or Instagram account in the same Accounts Center as their Meta account
  • Meta Avatars Store
  • Meta Horizon Worlds featured worlds
  • Media content from Peacock, YouTube VR, Pluto TV and Xtadium

Easier avatar editing in real-time

We made it easier to travel to the mirror in your Horizon Home to edit your avatar. With just one click on the mirror, you will be transported and ready to view real-time edits to your avatar in an optimal position.

  • This will be rolling out gradually.

Eye tracking improvements

We’ve improved eye tracking on Quest Pro to make it more accurate across a broader field of view and during expressions like winking. For the most accurate eye tracking, you can always recalibrate by going to Movement Tracking in Settings, then Eye tracking, then Calibrate eye tracking.

Use hands on notifications

We’re gradually rolling out a new way to interact with notifications in VR using your hands. With hand tracking turned on, you’ll be able to tap on icons or buttons, or swipe to dismiss a notification.

New virtual environments

We’re releasing two new virtual environments:

  • Futurescape: As featured in this year’s Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, Futurescape combines futurism with the beauty and tranquility of nature. You can try out this new environment by going to Personalization in Settings.

  • The Great Sand Sea: Available for download to all Meta Quest users who pre-ordered Asgard’s Wrath 2, The Great Sand Sea is a large, free roaming, living world that allows you to immerse yourself in the mysterious sands of a vast desert landscape in VR. Once you pre-order Asgard’s Wrath 2, you can download this new Home environment from the Meta Quest app or directly from your Meta Quest headset and then launch the environment from the Home screen.

Browser multi-touch support

Quest Browser now has multi-touch gesture support, allowing you to use Touch controllers or your hands to zoom in, zoom out, or interact with other web elements.

Does anyone know when the update is going to be released in the UK? There's no sign of it yet for me 😪

"Does anyone know when the update is going to be released in the UK? "

The last one took a month. So probably about when Wimbledon is finished. I know what I'm going to do... watch the tennis and forget about the update.

I know I have not seen v55. So for now its no airlink or virtual desktop as it runs fine for a few seconds then has a big hiccup and lag goes up for a second or so.

Thanks for the update! I just received v55 on my Quest 2. Unfortunately, I haven't noticed a change in FPS of our app using OVR Metrics. We have some areas of our scene where FPS drops to 55, was hoping this would bump it up to at least 65, but the FPS is the exact same everywhere. We're building with Oculus Integration v54.1 in Unity 2021.3.23LTS. Building with Vulkan. We've enabled "Allow Dynamic Resolution" in our Player camera. Not sure if there is something we are missing? Appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks.

I can't tell if it's the final and stable version that was announced on 6/21/2023 or another PTC update because no info was provided by Meta.
I can only assume it's PTC based on what Ryanality  wrote on Monday:" There's a release planned this week for PTC which will include a new build of v55. Assuming everything goes as planned, you should see it on Wednesday if you're on PTC".

Reporting-wise, nothing has changed from the previous v55 version.
My device just keeps working as it should.
Room setup and physical object mapping still isn't as accurate as in previous firmwares.

I only have to point out that as soon as I received the Airlink and VD update they had stuttering problems, frame losses (the same problems as v54 to be clear).
I didn't want to do the easy thing and blame the firmware. So I started by restarting the device several times, restarting the pc, until I noticed that the batteries of my controllers were at 30%; I replaced them and everything is back to perfection, VD and Airlink fully functional, I played fluidly as luckily I've been doing since I received the first v55 ptc. I advise those who still suffer from network spikes, artifacts and stuttering to also try monitoring the state of charge of the controls and see if the problems disappear / or decrease significantly (as happened to me) with the controllers properly charged.
At this point I recommend to do these checks also to those who are still on v54 to understand if somehow the charge level of the controllers is one of the causes of the pcvr connection problems.
Meta Quest 2 256GB, GC Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060, Intel 12th Gen Intel i5-12400F, 16Gb RAM, Windows 11 home 22H2. Connected with dedicated router via ethernet cat 6 with pc and to Quest 2 on wifi 5 ch 36

Updated to v55 within the last few hours. Don't see any obvious differences from v54. Not sure how to check for performance boosts. No change in AirLink that I can see but was not experiencing stutters and whatnot.

Finally got the update. Airlink is an unusable, stuttering mess but Virtual Desktop mostly works. For some reason VD starts to stutter and choke only once I load up SteamVR, but I've been able to rather consistently get it working fine by restarting Steam processes on my PC. Did not have this problem when I was on the PTC v55 over a week ago. Once I get it running it stays smooth, though, with no sign of the v54 network latency spikes.

So you guys had the server power to launch a social network app hosting 50 million users in two days but not enough to give me the **bleep** update leaving me with a gimped device in performance compared to other users for two weeks and counting? Once again showing how you treat the consumers that have already given you their money but i swear it’s the last time. And if you think I’m joining your garbage social media just so you can track me better you’re sorely mistaken.

I have 2 Quest 2 headsets.  (I use one, my husband uses the other) One of them updated to version 55 yesterday, but the other one did not. I am the Admin on both headsets, and I have shared my apps on the second headset.

The headset that was updated, no longer has any of the apps for the games I purchased.  Is this possibly because the second headset is not on the same version?  If so, any idea why they didn’t both update yesterday?

Missing my nightly Walk About Mini Golf game.  LOL

For those having problems with PCVR please check your mixed reality portal and oculus apps have not been throttled by Windows 10/11 - You can see this if you go to task manager.  If they have been throttled (or should I say paused) you will see this sign next to the process (II) - two lines down.  If you see a leaf icon next to it that process is being run with efficiency mode - also not good for playing games.

Seems to have begun with the v55 update. Reported via feedback. What happens that after quitting an app at times the Universal Menu will not display. Pressing the "oculus" button responds with the tone but UM will not display. Holding the button down in case the UM is out of the FOV doesn't help at all. Sometimes an app can launched via Voice Commands but usually Restart is needed. Other times the screen goes blank after pressing the "oculus" button. Restart is needed. Other times apps on the recent list or pinned will not launch and all you get is the tone. Sometimes I can drag n drop the app to multi window area or use Voice Command. Otherwise restart is needed.

Doesn't happen often but often enough to be annoying say 1 out of 8 to 10 times.
