Meta Quest v55 Release Notes

These features and enhancements will become available starting the week of June 21st, 2023 and will be rolling out to Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2 headsets.

Quest performance improvements

We’re continuing to move VR forward by pushing the boundaries of what Quest Pro and Quest 2 are capable of. With v55, we’re enabling higher clock speeds for the CPU and GPU for all Quest Pro and Quest 2 headsets, giving you smoother gameplay and a more responsive UI. This update also adds more power for developers to take advantage of for both existing and upcoming apps.

These performance improvements include:

  • Up to 26% increase in CPU speed for Quest Pro and Quest 2
  • Up to 19% increase in GPU for Quest 2
  • Up to 11% increase in GPU for Quest Pro

Passcode

We’re adding the ability to use a passcode to unlock your device, which will work like the unlock pattern. As this feature gradually rolls out, you’ll be able to set up a numerical passcode between 4 and 12 characters to unlock your device, enter saved passwords, and more. You’ll be able to manage your passcode from Security in Settings.

Messenger in VR

We’re updating the Messenger experience in VR to help you connect and make new friends while in the metaverse. With v55, we’re bringing the Messenger app, including messaging and audio calling to VR, so you can hang out with those who matter most regardless of which device they use.

People you follow are online indicator

You’ll now see a green circle on the People tab in the universal menu to help you know when people you follow are online.

Explore redesign

We’re gradually rolling out an experimental design with new content for the default landing page in VR, Explore, so you can effortlessly engage with your communities, compelling entertainment, and immersive experiences.

A few of the Explore changes we’re experimenting with include:

  • New layout formats
  • Reels in VR
    • Reels in VR will only be shown to users who have a Facebook or Instagram account in the same Accounts Center as their Meta account
  • Meta Avatars Store
  • Meta Horizon Worlds featured worlds
  • Media content from Peacock, YouTube VR, Pluto TV and Xtadium

Easier avatar editing in real-time

We made it easier to travel to the mirror in your Horizon Home to edit your avatar. With just one click on the mirror, you will be transported and ready to view real-time edits to your avatar in an optimal position.

  • This will be rolling out gradually.

Eye tracking improvements

We’ve improved eye tracking on Quest Pro to make it more accurate across a broader field of view and during expressions like winking. For the most accurate eye tracking, you can always recalibrate by going to Movement Tracking in Settings, then Eye tracking, then Calibrate eye tracking.

Use hands on notifications

We’re gradually rolling out a new way to interact with notifications in VR using your hands. With hand tracking turned on, you’ll be able to tap on icons or buttons, or swipe to dismiss a notification.

New virtual environments

We’re releasing two new virtual environments:

  • Futurescape: As featured in this year’s Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, Futurescape combines futurism with the beauty and tranquility of nature. You can try out this new environment by going to Personalization in Settings.

  • The Great Sand Sea: Available for download to all Meta Quest users who pre-ordered Asgard’s Wrath 2, The Great Sand Sea is a large, free roaming, living world that allows you to immerse yourself in the mysterious sands of a vast desert landscape in VR. Once you pre-order Asgard’s Wrath 2, you can download this new Home environment from the Meta Quest app or directly from your Meta Quest headset and then launch the environment from the Home screen.

Browser multi-touch support

Quest Browser now has multi-touch gesture support, allowing you to use Touch controllers or your hands to zoom in, zoom out, or interact with other web elements.

nalex66 I mean it can't be worse than it is you know. The chances I will have that specific issue some users got during rolling out is most likely not that big and my headset is already unusable because I can't do squat with only one controller working (outside of watching movies, but I didn't buy this headset just for that). People with issues should be prioritized with the roll out regardless of the rest. First to get update always. And Like I said. It already happened to me before where it would take way longer to get new version to the point next PTC version was already being rolled out. How long are they going to make me wait for potential fix so I don't have nearly a paper weight for 1200 euro? There is no excuse.

It seems that v55 on Link software for PC side has paused? I've had v55 on my quest 2 for a bit now, but still am on v54 on PC link software....... is that happening to a lot of people?  Just curious. (especially now that I see ptc v56 already gearing up).

soulburn74 I'm the opposite. I have v55 on pc but v54 on my headset. There is some major issue with roll outs. Though they always take long, this is the second in a row where I'm nearing a month and still nothing. Last time it was over a month before I got an update.

Another day. Still no v55 update. My headset with left controller pairing issue still unusable. Yo Meta. If you don't want to roll the v55 at least roll out the part that fixes my controller. You claimed it's an issue that your engineers recognized so how about letting people use their headset already? Or incorpoprate the fix in v56 PTC. I don't understand how is it so hard to let people use their headsets. It's the 3rd major issue in last 2 months that made headset unsuable in one way or another for many. There is no excuse stalling the update. PUT PRIORITY on delivering it to people affected by issues at least and roll it out now. Not tomorrow. Not in 3 days, not in 2 weeks. Now.

Early this morning I got another small update to v55. I noticed that the version and runtime version numbers to the right of the '.' changed. I hope this is more stable, as i had a few crashes before and my quest 2 seemed to get hoter than with previous versions.

Hello Meta. ANOTHER DAY and my headset still is useless because you can't effing give me v55. Roll it out NOW FOR AFFECTED PEOPLE or STOP FORCING UPDATES DOWN PEOPLE THROATS that break their headsets/controllers. At this point anyone affected should receive financial compensation for not being able to use the headset that they paid for because your forced updates and lack of care about affected people makes the headsets unusable.

I’m still on v54 on my quest pro.  Strange behavior on PC software too - I repaired my installation, it updated me to v55, then proceeded to downgrade to v54 - PTC disabled.  If I enable PTC, I can update to v56, but I just want v55, the stable version that a select few seem to have.

No updates on the massive v55 delay. Absolutely none. Not even a thought of consideration for people who wait for v55 fixing their headsets. You know Meta. People have limited patience.Maybe you should care about customers a bit more. Bugs that make headsets unusable should be an absolute priority. If you dont' want to roll it out officially then let people choose PTC version of the software. If PTC didn't change to v56 there would be no problem either. So this is another solution or pre-emptive measure you could've taken but decided not to - Don't deploy new version on PTC untill everyone have new software version or allow new one and the rolled out one to be a choice on PTC

Hi everyone, I'm getting word from the team that as of now v55 should be available for all Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets. If you've been looking for that update, you should be able to get it now if you haven't yet.

Please note that we are still working on some issues that have come up and the public test channel (PTC) for v56 is ongoing where we are flagging issues in threads in the Get Help board with the "PTC" tag.

Help others find great discussions and answers by adding kudos and marking solutions to your questions.
