After 2026?

I understand the announcement for the Meta Quest 2 not being feature updated after 2026 and only critical updates through 2027. My question is, will the game apps that we currently have on our Quest 2 continue to be updated past 2026 and 2027?

How long is a piece of string 🤷‍♂️😁?

  • As steve_40 says..... 😁. I would imagine that if game developers update their games, then they will be updated generally unless they say they're also not supporting Q2, or I suppose some future updates might mean that a game no longer works on Q2.

  • Updating is a little tricky though.

In May 2025 Meta blocked developers from updating Quest 1 games, same as they previously did to the Oculus Go. So even if developers want to support Quest 1 games, they can't release updates via the Quest store.

Oddly, despite Meta being entirely focused on Quests, they still support the 2016 Rift better than the 2019 Quest 1.

Oh, and apparently they are going to stop selling Quest 2 accessories at the end of this year, so might be time to stock up on controllers before they go extinct.

  • Hi Wolfey.333 🙂

No one guarantees lifetime support and updates for digital content. Sometimes games stop being updated even if the Quest you bought them for is still supported.

As for updates for your Quest 2 games after 2026… even if a game is updated, you probably won't receive that update on the Quest 2. The Quest 2 will  remain on a specific version number, and game updates will probably no longer be available.

If you install the game on the Quest 3S or Quest 3, you can use the latest game update.

I'm not a developer… I'm just comparing it to Beat Saber on the Quest 1.🤷‍♀️

  • The chances are that as they go further forward old gets left behind, there is possibly one way, if you purchase something new then any updates will follow until they're phase out all of the older versions hoping you purchase a new one, all game systems have done it and will continue doing so.
