Where are the 3D movies!

Seriously—there’s now a dedicated “TV” app with a movie section, including a couple of 3D trailers for Avatar, yet there’s no section for 3D movies at all. What kind of dropped ball is this? I should be able to open that app, select 3D movies as a main option, and watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 3D on my Quest 3. VR is perfect for 3D movies—so how is this still not nailed in the Meta/Quest/Horizon/TV experience? At this point, it’s just a sick joke.

  • Wow, how unrealistic can your expectations be? Even if they had these 3D movies, you would need to pay some sort of subscription service, just like you do with Apple, Netflix, Binge, Prime Video, Disney+, etc etc. You can still watch your own 3D movies on your home network in your headset using the media player or a 3rd-party player such as Bigscreen, as long as you have the DVD, Blu-Ray or a digital copy.

steve_40 I was thinking the same thing, glad you said it! 😁 It did get me thinking though, that it would be good if the streamers had 3D movie options anyway.

Yes. I love 3D movies. It's a shame it has gone out of fashion since the first Avatar movie. TVs and BluRay players that support 3D playback practically don't exist anymore. Our major retailers in Australia no longer sell 3D BluRay movies in their stores. Our cinemas no longer show any movies in 3D over here. But my Sony Bravia TV has 3D capability, also my AOC computer monitor can do 3D display. So if there was a streamer that offered 3D movies I would be totally sold.

Is this really what stumped you? The idea is simple: Meta could offer 3D-movie selections and rentals directly within the TV app—using the account and payment information that almost everyone with a Quest headset already has set up. Or they could continue integrating with existing services while clearly listing 3D movies alongside the regular film options already in the app.

Right now, there’s no way to browse available 3D movies on the headset at all, even though the TV app already includes a movie section. I’d just like an easy way to see what 3D titles are available and have an obvious path to watch them—whether that means being redirected to another subscription service or using a built-in Meta payment option.

It really doesn’t seem like a complicated concept: select a “3D Movie” filter, see the full list of available 3D titles, and go from there.

Not to mention the painfully obvious. Meta already HAS paid content... pretty sure it's not beyond their capabilities to, I don't know... add more paid content?

Not sure your question was the problem.

I think you may have missed the point, I’m perfectly happy to pay for the movies perhaps even subscribe to a service.

Apple Vision has 3D movies both on Disney+ (subscription) and the Apple TV app (formerly iTunes - purchase or rent/pay per view). I think it’s about time that Meta came up with something.

  • Yeah, this is very disappointing.  I've said it a few times recently - Meta's core apps are just lacking.  No 3D image viewer - taking down Meta Quest TV, 3D films as you say, the ability to film in 3D from the headset (can be done with a little script).

Where is the big cinema you can open and invite friends?  Where is the large screen on a lake you can invite people to?  These should all be built-in.

      No 3D image viewer

I'm pretty sure there is a built-in 3D image viewer (Media Player), but there's no shortcut in the app library and you can't open content directly from within the player. I guess you have to click on the media in your Files app and open it that way.

Where is the big cinema you can open and invite friends?  Where is the large screen on a lake you can invite people to?  These should all be built-in.

You can watch cinema on the excellent free BigScreen app, and invite people, so what is the point of Meta making their own version?

      taking down Meta Quest TV

Meta Quest TV is still there and working.

  • This has been a problem for years.  It definitely can be done.  (Adult sites.)

ForFreedom. 😂You'll feel like you're actually there.  I think the problem is broadcasting rights, and profitability and maybe lack of content. Very few 3D movies exist. If it was making money every streamer would offer 3D movies but none of them do. Then there's the user. I have no problem spending up to 2 hours playing games and moving around but I tried watching the Frankenstein movie(not 3D admittedly) on HBO Max, I think, on the Quest and I couldn't handle just sitting on the couch with the headset strapped to my face for 2+ hours. Put it on my new 85" Samsung I bought for last Christmas. Even 3D movies played as standard it's far more comfortable on TV. I can definitely imagine a world with a super light headset watching 3d content though and I would pay for that. We're not there yet. Maybe the Bigscreen Beyond will be good for that. Very lightweight and you could wear it for hours on end I imagine.

Let's not talk about haptic accessories for VR pron 🤣.
