Question

Lists of killer apps and games by user ratings - for the Rift hmds and Quest 1 - 3 with Link

UPDATED JULY 2025

Note that due to the malfunctioning Meta phone app, you cannot find all games using the phone app. Also the PCVR Store shown in the Meta PC App may no longer include all games, but using a normal PC, this link should work:

https://www.meta.com/experiences/pcvr/

If you cannot find a game in the Store, try searching for it in the Store or using an Internet browser. Searching on the internet, to avoid Quest standalone versions, just add the word "Rift".

To get an overview, here're lists of the highest rated games and apps for the Oculus Rift hmds and for Quest 1 & 2 with (Air)Link. If you're new to PC-VR, maybe these lists can be of inspiration - and maybe even old-timers can find stuff they've overlooked...

To be included at least 40 users must have rated a game or an app, and the average user rating must be at least 4.5 stars out of 5 (= 90 % or better) - based on user ratings in the Oculus Rift Store (Steam games or apps are not included). Maybe we could call these lists for grade "A" games and apps - or simply current Rift killer games and apps  😉

And why the need for 40 user ratings? In the Oculus Rift Store there are many games and apps receiving high ratings, but to provide sound statistics it's not enough with just 3 user ratings - or 10 - or even 20. I've chosen 40 because it's close to the minimum number of individuals I'd want in a group, if I was trying to get some robust statistics after collecting answers to a questionnaire (for a medical trial and similar investigations). I've provided the current number of user ratings for each game or app, so if some readers only trust average ratings based on 100, 500 or even 1,000 user ratings, the lists will accommodate for such preferences.

Note that these lists are not influenced by my preferences - I'm just the guy counting user ratings and associated average ratings  o:)
Also note that new awesome games or apps may not yet be on the lists due to an insufficient number of user ratings.

Chroma Lab (42 ratings) - to find this game, search for "Chroma Lab Rift" on the internet

BTW, to make these lists I selected the Oculus Store category containing all games and apps, organized the items according to user ratings (highest ratings first) and then - one by one - checked the number of ratings and the average score.

Finally we could also check which game or app (with an average user rating of at least 90 %) has the most votes in total - and the winner in each category is:

Rift game with the most ratings

Rift app with the most ratings

Divine powers want me to buy Synth Riders  :o - Just got this, and I don't think I'll participate in hurting a young girl nor do I want to pursue more fishing...

The Room VR: A Dark Matter now has 90 ratings and a close to perfect average 98% rating (4.9/5)  :o

This means that The Room VR now is the number 1 Oculus Rift game with more than 40 ratings (I've updated the top spot on the page 1 games list in this thread) - quite an impressive achievement. Due to Alyx I still haven't found time to play it. If you buy the Steam version, you get to choose if your want to use native Oculus drivers or not.

Btw, this is what might happen if you're isolated at home for too long and only have 1 game on your Quest  :D

I'm getting slightly worried about both Stormland and Asgard's Wrath - they both started with really great ratings, but now they've sunk to 90 %. That's not bad - but if it get's slightly worse, I'll have to remove both games from the list on page 1 of this thread. And I'd consider that really weird - because I consider these two games at the very top of Oculus killer VR games.

Asgard's Wrath - now more than 3,000 ratings, but average rating sunk to 4.5/5 (= 90 %):
https://www.oculus.com/experiences/rift/1180401875303371/

Stormland -  now nearly 1,800 ratings, but average rating sunk to 4.5/5 (= 90 %):

So what's wrong with these games?

I just completely updated the lists on page 1 of this thread (first post). These games made the list for the first time - I'm really happy to see Merry Snowballs in the top - it's a truly awesome game - it took several years to make the list, so many may not know of this VR gem:

Spice and Wolf

I guess there's so much to do this summer  :)

Ok, I've completed all 3 chapters in Spice and Wolf, and I just don't get what this app is about - and why so many rate it high - and it's expensive too. To me it's a basic animation tech demo - you can't move, you just sit there and listen - like GearVR. The story is quite boring - not much happens, it's a story about fitting together and bonding as a couple - being different but supporting each other.  The animations are nice - but personally this is not worth more than maybe $5 to me. It's too boring even to work as an intro to VR for guests.
After completing the 3 chapters, you get some interaction and can touch "Wolf" - but she's a very young girl (maybe like 10 years old), feels close to some weird kind of pedophilia. In short - I don't really get this rather strange app.

Just updated the list on page 1 and added:

Doctor Who: The Runaway (90 %, 102 ratings):
https://youtu.be/Y9BuKcNVKPY

Chroma Lab (90%, 40 ratings):
https://youtu.be/027kIfxjnA4

Interesting that Doctor Who: The Runaway got a much better average rating than Doctor Who: The Edge of Time (84%, 99 ratings). I'll install the Runaway later!  o:)

Btw, Steam is a different beast compared to the Oculus Store, because you can only vote thumbs up or down, and then the number of thumbs ups are counted. This could mean that any rating above 50% is counted as positive - but will depend on users preferences (maybe some will only count 85% as positive etc.). We do see similar trends comparing highest rated games and apps, but we can't compare directly to the more elaborate ratings in the Oculus Store. I just tried to select Rift games corresponding to what you can find in the Oculus Store - and the top Steam VR results are:

Or here:

https://store.steampowered.com/search/?sort_by=Reviews_DESC&vrsupport=102%2C202%2C201%2C402%2C401

Apart from Alyx there's not much in the SteamVR top that interests me. I tried "Explore Fushimi Inari" yesterday, but refunded, it wasn't that bad, but it was an empty tech demo to me - and looked awful using Index (lcd, way too gray, no proper blacks).

Without the Oculus exclusives, and only having SteamVR, not sure I'd gotten into VR before Alyx, lol.

Note that free apps may be rated higher than paid apps, because often you rate the experience compared to what you paid for it. Also Steam does use some special and hidden selection criteria - because you do not see games with only 5 ratings in the top - seems like Steam automatically applies some statistical weights to the results, thus a high averate rating with many votes seems to rank much higher than same rating with few votes.

Curiosities: IronWolf is rated extremely high on Steam, in the Oculus Store it does not even get 90%. Pixel Ripped 1995 has 51 ratings on Steam, in the Oculus Store it only has 26 ratings and there not enough to make the list on page 1 of this thread. Strange not seeing Moss and Trover in the top... Some rankings on Steam do not only reflect the VR version, for example Subnautica with more than 100,000 ratings has included ratings for the 2D version (the VR version is only rated 74% based on 341 ratings in the Oculus Store).

I had people on the AV forums trying to tell me that 98% of the games on Steam being crap is an opinion and not a fact. :D

I'd like to add a few titles from my Steam library that didn't make that list. I consider these to be 95% and above (just my rating):
-Alien: Isolation (97%)*
-The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR (96%)
-Moss (96%)
-Obduction (95%)
-The Talos Principle (95%)
-Acron: Attack of the Squirrels (95%)**

*Not natively a VR game, but with the VR mod, I put it up as my third overall VR favorite, right after Lone Echo & Alyx
** Not something I play on my own, but this game alone sells VR headsets like no other. It's a perfect game to keep everyone engaged when you have a group of friends cause everyone plays on their phone while someone is in VR (and then you do turns)
