Question

Lists of killer apps and games by user ratings - for the Rift hmds and Quest 1 - 3 with Link

UPDATED JULY 2025

Note that due to the malfunctioning Meta phone app, you cannot find all games using the phone app. Also the PCVR Store shown in the Meta PC App may no longer include all games, but using a normal PC, this link should work:

https://www.meta.com/experiences/pcvr/

If you cannot find a game in the Store, try searching for it in the Store or using an Internet browser. Searching on the internet, to avoid Quest standalone versions, just add the word "Rift".

To get an overview, here're lists of the highest rated games and apps for the Oculus Rift hmds and for Quest 1 & 2 with (Air)Link. If you're new to PC-VR, maybe these lists can be of inspiration - and maybe even old-timers can find stuff they've overlooked...

To be included at least 40 users must have rated a game or an app, and the average user rating must be at least 4.5 stars out of 5 (= 90 % or better) - based on user ratings in the Oculus Rift Store (Steam games or apps are not included). Maybe we could call these lists for grade "A" games and apps - or simply current Rift killer games and apps  😉

And why the need for 40 user ratings? In the Oculus Rift Store there are many games and apps receiving high ratings, but to provide sound statistics it's not enough with just 3 user ratings - or 10 - or even 20. I've chosen 40 because it's close to the minimum number of individuals I'd want in a group, if I was trying to get some robust statistics after collecting answers to a questionnaire (for a medical trial and similar investigations). I've provided the current number of user ratings for each game or app, so if some readers only trust average ratings based on 100, 500 or even 1,000 user ratings, the lists will accommodate for such preferences.

Note that these lists are not influenced by my preferences - I'm just the guy counting user ratings and associated average ratings  o:)
Also note that new awesome games or apps may not yet be on the lists due to an insufficient number of user ratings.

Tilt Brush (268 ratings)
Arden's Wake (44 ratings)
Chroma Lab (42 ratings) - to find this game, search for "Chroma Lab Rift" on the internet

BTW, to make these lists I selected the Oculus Store category containing all games and apps, organized the items according to user ratings (highest ratings first) and then - one by one - checked the number of ratings and the average score.

Finally we could also check which game or app (with an average user rating of at least 90 %) has the most votes in total - and the winner in each category is:

Rift game with the most ratings

Rift app with the most ratings

While I am an active poster on this site, in other places - like reddit and Facebook Groups - I am more of a quiet lurker. And it feels like not a single week has gone by, since April 2016, where some discussion, blog post, or e-Article about how "VR still needs a Killer App" hasn't taken place. Because I encounter that topic so often, that is where my head is at when I see a "Killer App" list.
In my opinion, there are likely only 2 "biggest killer apps" in VR:
  • On Steam, SkyrimVR
  • On Oculus Home, Lone Echo
And I still have a problem counting SkyrimVR as a true VR title, but whatevs, that is my own uphill battle lol

Overall though, it seems that Beat Saber, in all of its simplicity, is probably the Killer App King across all platforms.

I'd fully agree - I don't know the budget of Lone Echo, but compared to what I'd consider true AAA games due to their budgets alone (like GTA V, Battlefield series, CoD-series etc.) we're probably quite a long way from true AAA games in VR, but I'd love to be wrong.

So I don't think I've used the AAA-term in my posts in this thread - although I think Lone Echo is vastly superior to any pancake AAA game ;-)

To me a killer app is a simply an awesome game or app that most people will greatly enjoy (like Beat Saber) - no matter its budget.

PS. I did mention AAA in another post ;-)

"I'll be happy to admit that my "secret" agenda making such lists is also to show that we already have many top-ranked VR killer apps and games. Instead of constantly waiting for some AAA VR games to arrive, maybe some of us can find inspiration in the lists and discover real gems that somehow have been overlooked. Currently I'm expanding my VR comfort zone to include sports games, it's been some great discoveries so far"

This is definitely an agenda I can get behind. It's this type of agenda that can have a massive impact on a massive amount of people!

The free VR movie The Bond just reached 40 ratings - and got an impressive average rating of 92%. Get the movie here:

I have of course added the app to the list on page 1 in this thread  o:) I try to enter new games or apps when they have just gotten 40 ratings - and then again maybe every 6 months or if I see they passed 100 ratings.

Wrench: Engine Building Demo
This game has so much potential! I love the idea and will buy it as soon as its released and stable.
First reaction it crashed, lets try again. Oh I have to start over. Ok hmm the engine wont start, throw a couple wrenches out the window.
Perhaps I should read and watch the video on how it works.
Snap I need to pay attention to the instructions.
I love the game but it did crash on my twice and I had to start over.

But I hope that it gets the attention it deserves and promotes more games like it.
** We need something that shows practical tool use that was lost when shop class was taken away from us.
Yes I am old and I had shop class. You "kids" that missed out should have a way to see what you missed without having to lose a finger. No I have all my fingers.
I'm rambling now. Just try the game!!!

Chronos is "Daily Deal" today - I highly recommend buying this game if you haven't already done so - and yes, it's on the list (see page 1 in this thread ;-)

Works nicely with Touch - I'd say the game hasn't aged at all, I find it much better than most titles launched this year. 2c.
