Quest 3S: system splash image loads successfully but is not visible in a minimal Unity OpenXR app
System splash images are not visible on our Quest 3S. Only three loading dots appear, followed by the Unity scene.
We reproduced this in a new minimal Unity VR project with only official Unity XR/input dependencies. It contains no company payment AAR, game framework, or original game code.
Environment:
- Device: Quest 3S
- OS incremental: 4069240023000610
- Shell: 209.0.0.568.433
- Unity: 6000.3.22f1
- Unity OpenXR Plugin: 1.18.0
- XR Management: 4.7.0
- ARM64, Vulkan, standard UnityPlayerActivity
- Package: com.suplife.minimalunityvr.splash
- App name: Minimal Unity VR Splash
Steps to reproduce:
1. Install MinimalUnityVR-RGB.apk from the attached ZIP.
2. Wear the headset and cold-launch the app from Unknown Sources.
3. Observe the loading transition before the Unity scene.
Expected:
The four-color image labelled "RGB TEST" appears as the system splash.
Actual:
Only three loading dots appear. The app then enters a blue VR scene with cyan text:
"UNITY VR SCENE / NO LOGO IN THIS SCENE".
Verified:
- The APK contains assets/vr_splash.png, byte-identical to the input image.
- The test image is a 512x512 opaque RGB PNG without an alpha channel.
- A different 512x512 RGBA logo was also tested and was not visible.
- Application metadata:
com.oculus.ossplash=true
com.oculus.ossplash.type=mono
com.oculus.ossplash.background=black
- Shell logs explicitly report:
"Splash logo found for package: com.suplife.minimalunityvr.splash"
"Successfully loaded splash logo texture (512x512)"
- Unity logs confirm XRDisplaySubsystem displayCount=1, running=True.
Several existing games, including Unity 2022 games, show the same visible symptom on this headset. A full headset restart and recentering did not resolve it. A separate stereo splash test in the original game also did not resolve it.
We suspect a system loading-transition or Unity/OpenXR compatibility issue, but have not confirmed an OS regression or the exact affected release. We do not have another headset/OS version available for comparison.
Could you investigate why the successfully loaded splash texture is not presented? Are there any known issues or restrictions affecting system splash images for sideloaded apps?
The attached ZIP includes the minimal APK, RGB image, manifest, relevant log excerpts, and reproduction source. It excludes the original game project and full device logcat.
