Question

Sony next-gen PlayStation5 VR 120Hz 4K oled hmd (=PSVR2) - can now be used for PCVR too!

EDIT: See the new specs here:

https://www.roadtovr.com/sony-playstation-vr-2-announcement-psvr-2-specs-field-of-view/

Original post:

Close to breaking news - if true - I just love oled so much more than LCD (well at least if oled gets similar ultra-low SDE like modern lcd panels):

"One important holdout remains: Sony Group Corp. plans to use Samsung Display Co. OLED panels in its next-generation PlayStation VR goggles, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The Japanese console giant sold more than 5 million units of the original PS VR, launched in 2016, and is aiming to release the successor in the holiday period next year, the people said, asking not to be named discussing internal plans."

Source: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-06-16/fading-iphone-lcd-screen-maker-pivots-to-virtual-reality

Depending on the panel, lcd could still have more subpixels and higher res (like Vive Pro 2) - there're tons of things we don't know yet. And Sony hasn't confirmed anything.

Red arrow marks the arrival (first impact) of PSVR2 oled 🙂

UploadVR just rated Resident Evil 4 Remake VR Mode 100% or 5/5 - but it is one of the most impressive VR games ever made - together with Alyx, Lone Echo 1-2 and Call of the Mountain:

https://www.uploadvr.com/resident-evil-4-remake-vr-review/

Quote: "this VR version of Resident Evil 4 doesn’t just surpass the Quest version of the classic game but is the best Resident Evil game in VR, period."

Note that there is no comparison with the severely reduced Quest remake, the new PSVR2 version is light-years ahead and gives you the full-blown PCVR/PS5 version in VR.

New PSVR2 promo vid from Sony - but I can confirm they are not lying or exaggerating 🙂

After getting Resident Evil 4 VR Mode this hmd is really starting to shine, especially the oled and big fov. Eye tracking and foveated rendering are facilitating great performance and very sharp image quality.

Call of the Mountain, Resident Evil 8 (Village) VR, Gran Turismo 7 VR and Synapse are awesome VR titles too not to be missed. I think I've finally reached to point where I'd buy a new one if my PSVR2 broke.

I think I like RE4 Remake VR Mode more than RE8 Village VR Mode, because RE8 is much more horror-oriented and scary, while RE4 Remake VR is much more like Alyx. Now, many may not notice this much, but Alyx apart from being an action shooter, also is a horror-oriented game - with all the headcrabs, mutilated/dead bodies - and especially with Jeff.

So RE4 Remake is more an action shooter placed in horror-ish and very dark environment. And in that respect this may be the VR shooter closest to Alyx. I really dislike true horror games in VR, kept me from playing RE8, but I'm fine with RE4!

A few more shots of one the very best VR games ever made:

Ultramersion textures like in Alyx

Opponents can be dismembered with the shotgun and other weapons

Nice face details - yes, this dude is very dead 🙂

This chainsaw dude had a hard time falling asleep - so I kindly helped him with my shotgun 🙂

Note the great details with the eyes and cloth material

Even the food looks real 😉 - Check out the awesome fur details here

Not really a nice doggy - really a bad doggy - but at least it stopped moving after shot number 5

A giant skull - but I'm not gonna tell if it has any alive ancestors 🙂

Awesome real-time lighting, but this is an AAA game and benefits greatly from that

The torches are nicely animated and look real-ish in the game

Another example of the light from a big fire - check out the thick black smoke and particles in the air

The level of polygons is way beyond any kind of mobile gpus - this cave is extremely impressive - and runs great thanks to foveated rendering with eye tracking

Many objects like this one has a stunning level of detail - high-res textures combined with high-polygon assets - and real-time shadows

Another example of a high-polygon location with impressive view distance

The game truly is 10/10 for the graphics - one Alyx and Lone Echo 2 can truly compete

This does mean for persons without PSVR2, you're now missing out on an Alyx-class VR shooter - and that is a major loss for those knowing the value of the finest and most impressive VR experiences.

I don't see how anyone is missing out on a game that originally came out 20 years ago and has been ported as many times as Skyrim.  Go away, bot

Seems you're completely misguided or cognitively challenged, lol - Resident Evil 4 Remake is a new game from 2023 with highest-end graphics, of course with some similarities to the old original game for the story - Resident Evil 4 Remake is one of the highest-rated games in 2023 - getting a MetaScore of 93 just like Alyx:

PS5: Metascore 93 - https://www.metacritic.com/game/resident-evil-4/critic-reviews/?platform=playstation-5

According to Capcom: "Resident Evil 4 is a remake of the 2005 original Resident Evil 4. Reimagined for 2023 to bring state-of-the-art survival horror. Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, while introducing modernized gameplay, a reimagined storyline, and vividly detailed graphics to make this the latest survival horror game where life and death, terror and catharsis intersect."

The game has 97% positive ratings on Steam based on 5,000 reviews and is the 13th most sold game on Steam in 2023:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2050650/Resident_Evil_4/

https://store.steampowered.com/sale/BestOf2023

And it is this exact game launching March 24 in 2023, which Sony and Capcom have made into VR - by far not a port of the old game from 2005. You got the full PC/PS5 version (65GB) now working in VR - but only if you got the PSVR2:

If you've read the posts in this thread, you'd know UploadVR rated the VR version 100% - and this is truly one of the best VR games ever made, read this review:

https://www.uploadvr.com/resident-evil-4-remake-vr-review/

PlayStation Universe also agreed on a 100% rating - as I will too:

https://www.psu.com/reviews/resident-evil-4-remake-vr-review-psvr2-ps5/

Quote: "Resident Evil 4 Remake's VR mode is an immersive thrill ride from beginning to end, and what was already one of the best games ever made has been elevated to new heights on the PS VR2."

I just met a girl 😍 😁 This also represents the best face quality you'll probably see in Resident Evil 4 Remake VR - and does show some PS5 muscle. I took these screenshots standing next to her while wearing the PSVR2 hmd - note the skin color tone banding is an artefact as I had to increase brightness in these very dark scoreenshots (but image quality shines in-game with oled):

She's just been out in the rain, so her skin is wet. I guess Lone Echo 2 still is my favorite for faces, but this is not bad at all - looks even better in the hmd.

Also it was Dec 24 at night - and I met some big dude - could be due to getting too much milk and cookies? - could this be ... Santa? 🤔 - Or his secret brother Santa Darkson, who always gets lumps of coal for Christmas? 🤔

Well, I did get him 🤗 The bigger they are, the harder they ...

Also got help from my nice doggy/wolfie:

Btw, I'm no expert in this kind of anatomy, and I think I made a mess here with my very powerful shotgun 🤔

Did I ever mention that the lighting is awesome?

Merry Christmas to you all - and I promise to go to Church this year on Christmas Day 😇 🤗

I'm back - after the Christmas holidays - and have to be somewhat in the mood for this game, it's not exactly a walk in the park where you spend much time enjoying the daffodils...

This image just to show size - that is a big skull

Ashley and I continued our journey - and went here

Have to say this is not the world's greatest nanny, and her twin sister I wouldn't trust with my kids either 😉

Ashley and I did set the house on fire...

Found some big castle and went in

Example of long view distance

More examples of lighting:

Realtime lighting from a few lonely lamps/bulbs

Moonlight shining through the ceiling

Another example of lighting and dynamic shadows

Hard to see here, but the fog effects look great

Just some random vase, but much effort was put into all assets in this AAA game

The game still is close to Alyx for me - Resident Evil 4 VR Mode surely is one of the best VR games you can find.

Right now about 700,000 are expected to own a PSVR2 hmd, although this is an estimate. Current number show that 74,800 have played Resident Evil 4 Remake VR Mode - and some say that's a very low number:

My good friend Bard (Google's AI) and I just discussed the subject 🙂

Me: "Some say that RE4 Remake VR Mode only has 74,800 players in total - but if that's more than 10% of current 700,000 PSVR2 owners then that's not bad right?"

Bard: "Yes, if the player count for RE4 Remake VR Mode is indeed over 10% of current PSVR2 owners, that would be a significant number. Considering that the VR market is still relatively niche, it's impressive that a single VR title has been able to capture such a large percentage of the installed base. This suggests that RE4 Remake VR Mode is a very popular game among PSVR2 owners.

Here are some factors that could be contributing to the high player count for RE4 Remake VR Mode:

  • Resident Evil 4 is a beloved and well-respected game, and many fans were eager to experience it in VR.
  • The VR mode is well-made and immersive.
  • The PSVR2 is a relatively new and exciting platform, and many people are eager to try out new VR experiences.

Of course, it's also possible that the player count for RE4 Remake VR Mode is inflated due to the way that player counts are tracked for VR games. However, even if the actual number of players is slightly lower, it's still clear that the game is a success.

Overall, the high player count for RE4 Remake VR Mode is a positive sign for the PSVR2 and the VR market in general. It suggests that there is a strong demand for high-quality VR experiences, and that VR is becoming increasingly mainstream."

Some dude wrote that only 55,000 players completed the first test in Assassin's Creed Nexus, so maybe 75k RE4 PSVR2 players is a really great number. Also if there are 20+ mil Quest 2 & 3 hmds sold, the player number should have been more than 2 million if Assassin's Creed Nexus was played by more than 10% - and then 55,000 looks like a very small number.
I guess RE4 VR Mode is a giant success with the PSVR2 😉

I've long been a great fan of Jeff Minter, who made Polybius, and seems his new game will be a VR exclusive for the PSVR2:

You can get it for PC too, but only in 2D, and where's the fun in that...

Continuing my Resident Evil 4 Remake VR Mode vacation, today I visited this enchanting and charming place:

Graphics really are jaw-droppingly good - all is full 3D

Actually the above image is cropped - a full screenshot using PSVR2 looks like this:

If you look carefully, maybe you can see where I'm looking - due to foveated rendring the res is really low in my periphery

Also I'm into religious pluralism - who am I to say that one religion is better than another - although some deities sure look ... different 🤔 😇

You'll meet exciting new religions and deities in RE4 Remake VR Mode 🤗

Found some new dudes:

You don't need paper to write!

When bondage stops being ... fun... 🤔

Monk taking an afternoon nap

Jeff in Alyx still wins, but this dude was very charming too 😁

That can't be healthy...

Not really healthy too - but maybe better than the previous dude? 🤔

Should have paid more attention in anatomy class - not even sure if it's a he or a she... 🤔

Some more effects:

Waves in the black water are nicely animated - but hard to capture

Great atmosphere and lighting - and great sculptures

Call me old-fashioned, but I greatly prefer when an old wooden door really looks like old wooden door

Nice lights - but who lits all those candles? - Looks like a fulltime job to me

Also there are nice places too - I took Ashley to a garden 🙂

Maybe time for a (prolonged drum roll) .... Castle Tour? 🤔 😊

Outside - in the Castle garden/maze - with the blood-thirsty rabid dogs (not shown)

- and I thought the mansion entrance in The 7th Guest was awesome....

Nice high-poly statues - you can see the foveated rendering cause low-res in the periphery

Dining room - there's a nice puzzle there 🙂

One of my favorite rooms - it is an awesome experience just walking around in the castle (when you've gotten rid of all opponents)

Same room as the previous one - really a gorgeous room, note the ceiling

Btw, you can get nice stuff and keep them too - just found this Butterfly Lamp

Just can insert gems in some items like here for added value

Here's a key I found, it looks great and you can rotate it in 3D to inspect it. Much effort went into creating items

Ashley is getting sick - you can see it on her skin

You get to play "Alone in the Dark" as Ashley - her infection is spreading, see the veins in her hand. Dynamic shadows look great here - but this game is getting a lot more scary now 😬
