Question

Superhot is super overrated

I know I will get a lot of flack for this post, but here goes. Sometimes it seems that rift users will fawn all over a game simply because it's touch enabled. The fact is that  Superhot is not all that hot, and not  for reasons some may think.

I don't have a problem with it because it's "too short." I find that if a short game is really compelling, you can play it over and over again and continue to get something out of it.  I also love "the Matrix" style graphics.  My main beef with the game is that the game mechanics are all wrong.

I throw an ashtray at an enemy's torso and in the next split-second he completely dodges it.  I throw a bottle at an enemy and in the blink of an eye  he shoots it, shattering it to smithereens. I shoot a bullet at an enemy that would clearly hit them head-on and he dodges it. Obviously, since bullets move much faster than people do, this would be impossible.

Then there are the times when the game won't let me pick up an object. When you reach toward an object and come within range, it should be covered with a set of thin blue lines, but sometimes this does not happen, causing the player to lose.  Most players would consider this unacceptable with other games.

The worst part is, hits that should count but don't. I will make a punch that clearly connects with the enemy's head and it goes right through.  This happens A LOT.  Plus the game seems to forget that I have arms too, not just hands. If my hand is held up at right angles to the enemy, that means that my elbow is blocking his swing! Even if you want to consider me a couple of disembodied hands, a punch that clearly connects with the enemy's head should count every time, not just when the game feels like it.

This game is supposed to make you feel like a superhero. I don't. I just feel frustrated.

If you really had the ability to slow down time, it would be no contest and your enemies wouldn't stand a chance. The developers, realizing this, put in a lot of handicaps that shouldn't exist  simply to make the game artificially challenging.

Yeah, as cyber said you really just have to try to understand the game mechanics more. The timing that you're talking about is the delay because the entire world (red guys included) is moving at the speed you choose. Time progression is the total sum of the amount you move your touch controllers and head  1controller moving + 1 controller moving + HMD strafing = time movement (note keeping in 1 spot and ONLY swiveling your neck to turn and look will not really speed up time so you have a chance to think before acting in every scene, as long as you keep your hands still and don't walk around) If you only move 1 hand and don't strafe time will move at 1/3 speed (and will barely move time at all if you slowly calmly move only 1 of the 3.)

And yes anything not a gun/knife/axe/frying pan will break if hit with a bullet, so don't throw it in the path of his gun if he's about to fire, just aim for another body part (or even better wait for him to shoot without moving anything and you can easily move your head out of the way of bullets.)

Your bullets move the same speed as the bad guys bullets (the speed which you control still) so if they're walking you need to account for how far they will move in the time it takes your bullet to travel the distance between you.

Also the ONLY reason your fist should go through his face is if you slowly move it into him (not punching) or if your hand is open and not in a fist, you actually have to give a little bit of a real life speed jab. And there is no blocking punches (unless you punch his fist as that works) or bullets without using an object you're holding or your hands to stop them; and your hands will become wavy and cannot block bullets for a set amount of time.

If you learn the dynamics of it and get the timing down, you DO feel like a superhero, actually more like neo from the matrix. You just have to free your mind, and know nobody makes the first jump, so be patient.

Here, maybe a video review from one of our fellow forum members can help you get into the groove of things. This game is pretty great if you give it some patience and adapt to how it works. Hopefully you'll give it another shot, if only so it's not a waste of money for you.

    really?

Not once through the entire game did I ever see the AI purposely dodge anything I threw at them.  I feel like I missed out because I never saw this mechanic hha

They don't dodge things, they move around as they try to kill you so they're not just sitting ducks. Some run TO you some run in set paths as they shoot at you some stand still. He's talking about if you point at a running guys head and shoot, that by the time the bullet gets there he's moved along his path and the bullet doesn't hit him.

In fact I'm surprised no one has said that about dead and buried as those are the slowest moving revolver rounds in existence, I was kinda hoping it would have hitscan shots (aka instahit like real bullets do) In fact I would love it if they added a purchasable weapon something like the pellet rifle from nvidia's funhouse, but stronger and more badass.

It seriously sounds like you just stink at the game.  Everyone single person I've shown this to loves the game.  I find it absolutely fun.

If the time slowing thing works for you why can't it work for the AI chaps just doing their jobs? Are you racist against AI?

Why do so many people not even know what the definition of racist is in this day and age?!

Thanks for the comments--I will continue to play the game. I really like the graphics and concept, I just think the mechanics need a little more refinement.

Okay, no need to be racist about it.

I agree with others that I don't think you fully understand the mechanics of the game.

That said I still think it's overated, in the first 10 minutes you've seen all the game has to offer then it's just repetitive and at times frustrating.
