Still Not Visible! Some Indie Games Being Dropped

NOTE III: I've started a reddit thread in indiedev if anyone wants to add or comment on it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/IndieDev/comments/1g8yzc4/warning_the_meta_quest_store_may_not_be_indie/

NOTE II: Meta Quest Store has no intention of helping indie developers if there is something wrong. Please see the ticket thread I have had with the team and then the response I recieved today, at or near the bottom of the comments.

NOTE: If any other developers are having this issue, reply in here, it seems there are more of us than I thought. Let's try to get one big item going.

Hey Meta Quest Team,

Yes, I did a post last week about how our game has been approved and is not visible in the store and I'm doing another one.

I appreciate that you responded, we sent an email to the support email you gave us, but it just went to the same team that we have had an open ticket with for the past two weeks.

Two weeks!!! Our game is only visible if people type in its name exactly. It never appeared in new releases. It doesn't show up in any categories or search terms we gave it. Two weeks of the same response from the team with the ticket, "we have escalated it". How in the world does it take two weeks to determine what the issue is and fix it.

Thousands of dollars went into our release strategy that we vetted at GDC with the meta employees working the space there. Thousands!! We are a small studio, everything we do we vet and determine the best course of action.

I asked if there was any way they could act like it was new so we could get on the front page under new release like we planned to be and were told that we could always delist the game and then go through the submission process again. How in the world is that an answer!

Do you know how many people can see and download your game if it isn't visible or at the very least semi-searchable. No one.  The only reason a few people have seen our game is because streamers have had to say you need to type in the name of the game directly, or people click on a sidequest link. Freaking sidequest can see it and categorize it from your store but you can't seem to do it.

Everything was geared towards this release. We did not expect it to be big, we were hopeing for luke-warm at best, we are realists. But this is insane! We have already had to tell everyone to find another place to go work because as far as we can tell, Meta is incapable of doing simple tasks like listing a game where they say they will and the last of the funds was used on a now-useless release campaign.

Another great response we got was a list of articles on how to submit and publish a game on Meta. Thanks! We read those a long time ago and then again when you started merging the stores, we talked to you, we did everything that was asked and it didn't matter.

Long winded way of asking a simple question. Why can't meta fix what is happening to our game? Can we get the email or a phone number of someone who can actually make something happen? We have asked the developer support and we just get the same response.

In the email where they said to delist the game and resubmit they said they did not recommend it. So, what, are we just supposed be like ohh well, meta said your screwed so were screwed. At this point it seems like the only viable option because I'm starting to think you don't have control of your own system.

Just in case anyone thinks I'm making something up i'm going to post the support thread in the comments

So another studio/game that is having issues. The games/apps seem too random for it to be a blocking thing. I doubt the developers are that incompetent that they can't figure this out after a month. It more seems like Meta leadership doesn't care.  The worst part is they are still selling the store to indie devs who are spending money moving in this direction.

One more thought for the day. I wonder if there is a way we could get word out to other indie developers that they need to be careful about spending money on or planning a large release around the meta quest platform as there is a chance that it will be invisible even though Meta is saying otherwise.

Going to try delisting and resubmitting - wish me luck!

So I decided to submit under a new name without delisting the original app. Mixed results so far wrt search and browse... I'm going to wait until tomorrow before drawing any conclusions or getting into the details. Don't do anything hasty in the meantime (and do check one more time though all the genres your game is listed under)!

Incurian I'd also be interested to know if you show up under new releases.

This is the problem with monopoly. They can do whatever they want, there is no competitor store, and unfortunately for us they do not prioritize indie developers by breaking the only plausible way an app with no proper advertising can be found.

Hmm, I just did a search on all of my search terms and categories. Still nothing is there.

Hey guys, I just got the following response from meta Developer support. Either they are just trolling or they don't understand the issue at all.

Hi Brion,

The Store team has provided the following information.

The Meta Horizon Store aims to match apps and games with the users who are most interested in them. Updating your app’s metadata by adding search keywords and reviewing your app’s category and genres help inform how we identify the best match for a given user.

Metadata updates may take some time to impact discoverability and are one of many factors. For additional information about how to market your app, please see our documentation on marketing best practices.

As you consider adding search keywords to your app’s metadata, remember that to distribute on the Store, an app’s metadata must match the content of the app (VRC.Content.2).

Thank you for understanding,

Michelle

I suspect they understand the issue but it's just not a priority. We are pretty small fish, and while we're probably important for the long term health of the ecosystem... they need to sell headsets and games in the short term to get the marketplace (and by marketplace, I mean Horizon Worlds) stood up at all.

It would be useful if they conducted a survey comparing team size and marketing budget to sales; it would be nice to know how viable the small/solo indie thing is. Is this a bad model, or am I just bad at it? Probably they will have a lot of good data at by the end of the year, but it's doubtful whether they'll share it or whether I can keep paying the mortgage until then. Really crummy time to be a failing solo dev, tbh, but I'm not sure having gotten hired onto a big team would have helped either given all the issues they've been having lately. I suppose they got a paycheck while it lasted, though.

Edit: sorry for weird rant.

Here are the last few responses on the my open ticket. Shows a complete disregard for what the ticket was opened for and is in all, a pretty silly response.

    Michelle,

    Are you kidding!?!

This is an insane response to what has been going on for this entire thread.

Ticket opened: "Hey meta, we released our app and did everything you said, it can only be found by searching for it by name. It didn't appear on the new releases section, in the september section or in any of the categories we listed and none of the search terms work."

One month goes by where we are told it has been pushed to the internal team and they still can't get anything done.

Meta: "Have you listed categories and search terms?"

This would be hilarious if it hadn't cost our entire release budget for nothing.

    Hi Brion,

I understand this was not the answer you were wanting, but I want to assure you that the Store's goal is to connect apps and games with users who are most likely to be interested in them. This decision was made with that goal in mind. We suggest reviewing our Marketing and Promotion overview to help you improve the discoverability of your app in the future. (https://developers.meta.com/horizon/resources/vr-marketing-channels)

Thank you again for your patience and understanding. I hope the upcoming changes will improve your experience.

  • Hi Vance,

I appreciate your continued efforts and communication regarding this issue, but I wanted to seek some clarification on a few points.

When you mention that there's no new information about the keywords, could you help me understand what this means exactly? Given that you've been in contact with the internal team since we started discussing this, I imagine there has been some insight shared, even if it's limited.

I’d like to ask a few questions to better understand the situation:

    1. Has the team confirmed whether the issue with keyword search is indeed broken, and that currently, there's no way for apps to be found using keywords?

    2. Given the importance of search functionality for app discoverability, what makes fixing the keyword search so challenging, especially as it seems to have been unresolved for over two months?

    3. Could you provide some insight into the priority this issue has been given internally? I understand that these technical issues can be complex, but given its fundamental impact on basic app searching, it would be helpful to know if it's being treated as a high priority and what the current roadblocks are.

I truly appreciate all the work you and the team are doing to resolve this, and I'm hopeful that we can find a way to address this sooner rather than later.

    Thanks again for your support,

    Kind regards,

  •

My new theory is that "they," or at least some subset of them, did not want to open up the marketplace, but could not be seen to ignore the calls for it. So what we're seeing is malicious compliance. Technically being responsive without actually making substantive change (or rather, making additional changes to achieve their own intent rather than becoming open).

Whether it's policy or the store team has gone rogue, who can say.

Ok guys, this information may be helpful to some of you indie developers.

I worked with tech support for the last 30 days or so, and got exactly nowhere with my questions and comments regarding searching for apps on the store.

However, I did some extensive testing on a Meta Quest headset and the Meta Horizon Mobile App, and here is what works, and what doesn't work, as of today:

    • Meta Quest Headset
      • Search apps using filters
        • Sort by price
        • Filter by genre
        • Show apps under $9.99
        • This search works and my app appears in the listing!
    • Meta Horizon Mobile App (iPhone, iPad, etc.)
      • Search apps using filters
        • Sort by price
        • Filter by genre
        • Show apps under $9.99
        • This filtered search returns exactly 1 app: Jungle Zoo Ocean…
      • Search apps using filters
        • Sort by price
        • Show apps under $9.99
        • This filtered search returns a small subset of available apps (my app does not appear)
      • Search apps using keywords
        • This search does not return apps with the specified keywords
          • Search apps using keywords
            • This search does not work, and apps do not appear using keywords (many developers on the meta forum are reporting this also)
      • Meta Horizon Mobile App Summary
        • Many apps are not discoverable using filters or keywords while using the Meta Horizon App on mobile devices.

I think there might be SOME improvement for Search that is better than when I tested last week.

Headset - Search using filters is still working

Mobile app - Search using filters is NOW working

Web portal - Search using filters not working

Keywords - Not working anywhere (headset, mobile, web)
