Can we get a better Unity tutorial?

The tutorial listed under "Tutorial: Build a Simple VR Unity Game" has some problems. There are 3 things I consider "errors" in the current tutorial.

  • Pre step 1 it should tell you to import "OculusUtilities.unitypackage"

  • In Step 2 references OVRCameraRig but we never were told to replace the camera with a OVRCameraRig, that likely should be pre step 1 too.

  • In Step 3 it says
Select Player in the Hierarchy view and change the Speed value in the Player Controller (Script) tab of the Inspector view from 500 to 800.
In the tutorial the speed value is 10 not 500. Also, honestly leaving it at 10 was a good speed for the ball (I was using a Steel Series XL controller on android).

Also, I think this tutorial would be a good opportunity to teach the user how to make UI elements. Taking the things taught in the blog article "Unity’s UI System in VR" to teach the user how to make a gaze locked "You Win" message and how to make the score a non gaze locked floating text.

The tutorial should also mention OVRPlatformMenu for GearVR users to get things like back button functionality working.

Lastly, not directly related to the tutorial, but in the "Utilities for Unity 5.x Developer Guide" section "Best Practices: Mobile" it says
Note: The Unity Profiler is not available for Unity Free.
This is not true, in Unity 5 the profiler is included in the free "Personal Edition".

I don't think that doc has been updated in a while, so some of it may be off.

In any case, I think we have a whole new set of example projects coming soon to replace this.

    Thanks.

Would there also be new tutorials for Gear VR too?

I was referring to PC. What kind of tutorials do you need for Gear VR?

I can't speak for Ashles but I personally would love a Gear VR specific "debugging and profiling tutorial" for code running on the Gear VR instead of inside just inside the unity player.

I think I have figured out how to do it correctly but a official tutorial would likely cover any gaps I am missing.

Hey Ashles and leftler, I'd love to hear more details about what you'd like to see in Gear VR tutorials, or topics you'd like to see covered.

lefter, could you elaborate on what you'd like to see that's not covered in the Mobile testing guide?
    https://developer.oculus.com/documentat ... k-testing/

Even if you'd just like to see similar info presented in more of a walk-through format, that would be helpful to know.

In general, our docs department is definitely interested in hearing from devs on what would help you in your work, so any other suggestions or requests, please let us know.

    Thanks!

zenshin, that is the guide I used to get to the "I think I have figured out" point.

I guess mainly I am looking for guides that go through the topics discussed in https://developer.oculus.com/documentat ... nce-intro/ and that use pre-made projects that are intentionally designed to perform badly on Gear VR hardware using common mistakes by new developers. Then walk through, in a step-by-step fashion, identifying problem areas and changing the project to deal with the problems.

Also a Unity3D focused version of the https://developer.oculus.com/documentat ... -overview/ article would also be nice to have that uses the power management features in the OculusUtilities.unitypackage.

I think my biggest problem is I just need to read more Unity tutorials. I am a long time C# developer of desktop apps but the Gear VR has made me want to start making my own games for the first time. I think I am just tripping up on "Beginner Unity Issues" not "Beginner GearVR Issues".

Oh, and a walkthrough on making in game UI would be nice. Basically a version of this blog post that would be kept up to date with the new techniques and features as new versions of the Oculus Utilities for Unity and new built in features to Unity come out.

    Hi Cyber,
A video walk through tutorial to get up and started and what are the latest required Android etc downloads would be great. There was a really good one on youTube ( here ) showing every download and stage that allowed me to create a scene from scratch for my Gear VR but that was in a previous version of Unity.
I will work through the documented stages and see how that goes, but a video version really helps.

How dare you ask Oculus for tutorials! !!! ;)

But seriously Oculus, if you guys don't have time for docs, tutorials and examples, then why not to provide OVRManager integration for Unity VR samples?

People would not bother you, since Unity's VR samples have detailed description and run on Gear VR out of the box.
