How to apply the Rift specific skybox?

Hi,

I've made the unity car-tutorial rift-ready (see here).

I want to switch to using the special Rift skybox but don't know how to go about it.

Could someone provide the steps to take the skybox from the rift-unity integration packages and apply them to another scene/project?

Thanks, Adam

Nevermind I got it to work. Didn't see that you had to attach it to an empty object. Had it on the cam.

If your skymap is a single texture, already rendered Equirectangular, Cube, Cube Cross, Mercator, or Gall-Peters... your problem is solved. Use Planettool (command line), and crop the results with Photoshop or some other image editor (Note Photoshop PNG export causes seams; import directly from PSD to avoid these).

I just wanted to say thanks! This works great with the Allsky Textures!
I created myself a Photoshop template with slices to crop the backgrounds faster.. I think it might be useful for others so here you are: http://www.bloculus.de/DL/TemplateSlicesCube.psd .

A quick Guide how to use planettool:
    1. Download Planettool
    2. Get the current type of your skybox: http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Planettool#Projections (Allsky uses Equirectangular (Latitude/Longitude)
    3. Shift + Right Click in the planettool folder and "Open Command Prompt here"
    4. Enter: planettool --input <inType> <inFilePath> --output cube <outputFilePath>
e.g. for AllSky Textures it shoud look like this:
planettool --input latlong "High Moon Or Something.png" --output cube "High Moon Or Something CUBED.png"
    5. Download my Photoshop Template to export the 6 slices easily from the CUBED.png:
    http://www.bloculus.de/DL/TemplateSlicesCube.psd
    6. done! Create a Render-FX/Skybox Material, appy the 6 textures and use it with Noras Skybox Component!

    Maybe somebody finds this helpful.

thanks for this- Nora's script works perfectly. I just used the unity skybox material, but it isn't the nicest looking - I'll try the planettool next.

Searching to Get Allsky to work with Oculus lead me here.
All the suggestions are working perfectly! I get a little bit of an artifact but im guessing i just have to tweak it now that I understand what is actually happening.

And the template will help alot!

    Kudos!

Nora I really like your script as I think we all do. Sure helps us work around the current issue. However, as with all tools, it does become difficult to ensure that we're all on the latest version. Especially if we're using the script across multiple projects. Would you consider checking your script into github? It would make it much easier for us to pull down new changes and we can fork your code if we want to make modifications to it.

Some one PM'd me to a copy of my skybox so I decided to export my skybox object as a unity package.

    Repository: https://github.com/ssshake/OculusRift_Skybox

    Direct Download: https://github.com/ssshake/OculusRift_Skybox/blob/master/Oculus_Skybox.unitypackage?raw=true

So this package contains the skybox object, materials and nora's script. Just import it, assign the space material, or you own, set it to follow your player/camera.

    Hi Nora,

could you provide some tips on how to use your script ?
For example, if I have some jpg images of my skybox, how can I use your script ?
Maybe give a description of each parameter and its effects ?

Not easy for a beginner like me...

    Thanks !

Hey man, check my post right above yours. I converted Nora's script into a working unity package specifically to help people figure out how to use it.

Did some of you try with the jpeg images from the Tuscany demo and got the edges of the cube visible ? They appear quite light gray, but still it breaks the continuity of the skybox...
Any idea what is wrong or needs to be corrected ?

    thanks
