Set up for working with DK2 in Unity

Hi all, how are you setting up your system for developing in Unity with DK2?

I love the idea of direct access, a great step forward, but until (if ever?) that works in the unity editor, the DK2 seems even more awkward to me than the DK1 was... unless I'm doing something wrong.

If I duplicate the displays, I get a maximum resolution of 1080x948, which is too small to work with - I don't understand why that's not 1920x1080, and it'd be much more useful if it was - any ideas?

If I extend displays with my main monitor as the 'primary', everything works ok, but the display in the rift is very significantly slower and more juddery.

If I extend displays with the rift as 'primary', the display in the rift is nippy, but then windows becomes practically unusable, with all the menus, icons and any new apps appearing in the rift and needing to be moved with lots of awkward one-eyed peering.

Any advice on optimizing the setup much appreciated - how do the Oculus guys have it configured? I think the main reason it seems more awkward than before is because I used to duplicate, and get a decent resolution (I think?!). Having seen how well it works, I now *really* want direct access mode to work in Unity. I guess at the moment I have to choose between slow rift, awkward windows, or really low resolution.

(BTW: I'm running Windows 8.1)

Thanks,

Dave

I just got my DK2 and i'm anxious to get back onto my projects here, so my question is this:
What kind of hardware setup do you guys have that allows for dual monitors and the rift to all be plugged in simultaneously?

I'm running a gtx460 which has two dvi ports, so whenever i want to test on the rift i have to unplug the second monitor, then plug in the rift.

This wasnt such a pain with the dk1 since i had a passive DVI extension cable sitting on my desk and i could quickly swap inputs but now i need to get down on my hands and knees to dig around the back of my tower every time, kind of a pain.

I'm assuming newer video cards have more than two inputs?

I think GeForce 660 and up generally support more than two inputs (I use two DVI monitors and the Rift through HDMI).

My personal machine has a GeForce 560, which only supports two inputs, but I added in a GeForce 460 to get a third monitor. If you go that route (adding in a lower-end graphics card), then make sure you don't use an SLI configuration. Just plug them both in and hook up your secondary monitor to the low-end card, while leaving your primary monitor and the Rift on your primary card.

Your 460 GTX is fine for working within the Unity editor where framerate is mostly irrelevant anyways, but shelling out for an upgrade to a better card might be the more reasonable option compared to investing more in outdated tech unless you have an old card lying around.

Ah, thanks for the info. Unfortunately i only have one pci-e port so i guess i'll have to upgrade. Oh well, this card's starting to show its age anyways
