UE4 QA 07_2014 (4.3) integration with Oculus SDK 0.4!

Hey guys,

Finally, it is here. Oculus SDK 0.4 integration with UE4 4.3 (July'14 QA) is released.
Licensees can download the integration package from our web-site (Developers -> Downloads). This integration will patch the codebase up to 4.3.1.
GitHub $19-subscribers can access it through https://github.com/Oculus-VR/UnrealEngine/tree/4.3 (also 4.3.1 changes are already applied).

Note, you'll need to install the latest 0.4 Runtime for this integration to work. Once you've installed the Runtime your previous UE4 + Oculus (0.3-based) will stop working, however, it is easy to restore its functionality by two simple steps:
1) Using the Oculus icon in the taskbar switch display mode to 'Extend Desktop';
2) Using the same icon, run the 'Configuration Utility', go to the 'Tools' -> 'Advanced' -> 'Pause Service...'. The service will be automatically restarted once you run 0.4-based app.

We are working with Epic to integrate this code to upcoming UE4 4.4, will see how it goes (can't promise anything; in worst case scenario we will provide our own integration for 4.4 as well).

Note, there are several known issues with this integration, the major ones are as follows:
1) OpenGL doesn't work in Windows (in both modes - "Direct HMD Access from Apps" and "Extend Desktop to HMD".
2) There is no timewarp on Mac; will be there in the next update.
3) If you have issues in "Direct HMD Access..." mode - switch to "Extend Desktop": we are still actively working on improving our display driver.

If you have any issues or questions - post them here, I'll try to monitor this thread regularly.

Thank you, completely missed that link for some reason.

Edit: One more question, how do I add a context menu for "Launch game" by right clicking the .uproject file, like in the standard UE4 installation? I do this because the framerate is unbearable with the editor running in the background. I can't build a package on my project because there is a bug with 4.3/4.4 with some sample content (I used that as my starting point)

More info on that bug here if interested: https://answers.unrealengine.com/questions/79107/cant-buildpackage-modified-content-example-maps-in.html

Have you tried turning off real-time in the editor? Look for the down arrow in the upper-left (next to "Perspective") of the viewport, uncheck "real-time" or hit Ctrl+R. Best to turn it off for thumbnails in the content browser too - "View Options", bottom-right of the browser. Doing so significantly relaxes the overhead on my system.

*Edit: Upper-left, not upper-right. My mistake.

Thank you, I had tried that and it worked. I've actually done that in the past with minimal results, but this time it worked perfectly for some reason, maybe the thumbnail thing. :) I launched as standalone and my scene showed up on the rift immediately. Very happy.

Now if only I could build the demo now without it crashing due to that bug!:(

    I can't built I tried on 2 different machine :

What a nightmare this is for me...
Installing visual studio.... installing github... all that stuff to make built....
I have no idea what I am doing or how to fix it...

I copied followed the official video, copied 1of2 and 2of2, also the oculus 4.1 req... etc...
I have no idea what is happening...
I looked for info on internet :
"It seems that the library directory has not been added. In Project Properties, Linker, General options, add the directory where atls.lib resides to the Additional Library Directories field."

    I don't see linker, I don't know how to add a directory...
    I don't see the atls.lib anywhere...

    I am so lost...

    Also in the notes :

"Apply the supplied patch (UE4-Oculus.patch) using the standard patch tool (or something you like that is compatible):
    $ patch -p0 -l --binary < UE4-Oculus.patch"

    "standard patch tool"
    What standard patch tool ?
    From where ?
    Compatible with what ?
    ....

Oh boy.... I am reaaaally on another planet....
    Help !

No problem - Kudos for trying it again instead of sticking with past experience. :) I remember doing the same early on when looking for ways to minimize the general editor greediness while working in Blueprints, and having it do little as well. Perhaps it was non-working previously, or something. I used t.maxfps 10 (or another low number) previously as well, but that causes all kinds of issues (not the least of which is low FPS, obviously)

I know another frequent request is to have the UE4 editor stop consuming so many resources when minimized. I think that's somewhere on the radar, but a quick test shows it's still just as intensive in real-time mode even minimized.

Would help if I could OlivierJT, I'm just hoping somehow the SDK makes it into 4.4, myself. Unreal devs seemed to indicate it would likely stay Github due to 4.4's feature freeze timeframe + general stability worries with a beta driver, but it looks like they're working hard to try to get it in there after all. We'll see.

    Here you go: http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/patch.htm

But that's not really going to help you. I'm getting the missing atls.lib error as well and I build my UE4 on a regular basis.

Looks like this is the problem: viewtopic.php?t=10917&p=144079
We are using the microsoft ATL library but that's not included in the express edition of VS2013.

Not helping that is for sure ^_^

I am trying to fure out the post in the link you provided... but... these guys speak "non human" too.... :

    -----------------
    My process:
    1. Install Windows Driver Kit ("Build Environment" only)
    2. Create a new libovr by building the project LibOVR.vcxproj found in LibOVR\Projects\Win32\VS2013. When doing this I had to add the include path and the library path to ATL as previously described by danielandersen.
    3. Build my own application. Here I had to add the ws2_32.lib as well as the ATL library paths.
    -----------------
I am trying..... but this is uncharted waters for me...
    2. looks so obvious... but it's not ^_^

    I did 1.
I have located the infamous atls.lib....
    Have to figure out "2"....
    will report back....
I tried the "remove the atls.lib references" :
    https://github.com/jherico/OculusSDK/commit/2368d529b5832d69f89d4167a30f7a93195d57fd
    But without success...

Olivier, I'm running into this problem too, however, the thread about the missing lib is not specific to UE4. If I figure this out I'll tell you. Step 2 of that is referring to a project that you'll find inside the standard Oculus SDK folders. I'm trying to compile my project with just the includes talked about in the first post in that thread first, after that I'm going to try that post.

Keep this thread updated with how you get on!

Knowing my luck, by the time I get this to work, they'll have updated UE4 with official support for the SDK 4.1 service ;)

Yes we'll keep updated of course !
I have given up, I am awaiting for Artyom17 answer.

I spend 14 hours on that, slept 5. I am so done...

I have a deadline because I am going to Germany especially to demo SU... this Sunday...
It would sucks to demo on DK1...

The backup plan is 0.3... but still...

I can't lose anymore time on that :(
