PTC v55 Release Megathread

The Public Test Channel (PTC) for Quest v55 is starting to roll out for Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2 soon. Thanks everyone for all your feedback on our previous builds, we several bugs were identified in the last PTC and the solutions for some have shipped, while others are on the way!

Let's use this thread for collecting feedback on v55. Share your impressions and let us know if you see any issues. Please make sure to also send in bug reports along with posting here if you notice anything going wrong.

We know it's tough when you run into a problem on a PTC build and want to thank you all again for testing out PTC and sharing your feedback! This feedback is extremely helpful to our engineering teams. We appreciate your interest and persistence in testing out the core functionality of software as we develop!

Noticed an issue with v55 only a little problem but still there never the less still a bug, when you use one of your own backgrounds (even the ones included) on your home screen when look at the menu and move your head from side to side the text blurs, this doesn't happen with the home standard background. Can someone else check this ?

Just a comment me being new to PTC.  I have owned my Q2 since October 2020.  Yet this is the first time I decided to join PTC.  With that said, I feel this is an opportunity to give good feedback to the developers.

Honestly BASHING and complaining about the past or whatever is not constructive.  You should provide good feedback with details and facts.  Not opinion and complaining.  It's how you get focus on the issues rather than making the Dev's read through a bunch of posts making them feel bad over peoples OPINIONS!

I run a team of SW developers and I am telling you good constructive feedback gets attention NOT complaining over and over again with no details.

My 2 cents....

We are getting the flashing pixels/white sparkles on playback of our h265 immersive video footage via a Unity app which we've made for this purpose (which uses exoplayer).

They are exactly as described and shown in this and other forums (sometimes called "rainbow sparkles"), appearing more to the right side of each eye display in a near random but frequent sequence - this started with v53. We have tried every possible combination of encoding options/file types/in-App render settings, and unfortunately nothing fixes it. There are a lot of people complaining about this same problem in the Virtual Desktop discord server (which uses h264 and h265 streaming/decoding), and others are reporting it on reddit with Oculus Link and VD.  The developer of VD ggodin in the discord server has said its an Oculus OS problem since v53 - when people complain he says they have to wait for a fix from Meta (which hasn't seem to have happened with PTC v55, although some report a minor improvement).

I'm really outlining this so Meta knows how many people might be affected by this problem across various apps - it's really disappointing that it was first reported in v53 and yet there is still no fix. Our immersive 7K/8K video footage was playing back beautifully on Quest 2 prior to the  v53 update.

I really hope Meta engineers look into this and make this a priority, as my research indicated this is quite a widespread problem. I'm happy to answer any questions based on our two weeks of researching it - thanks.

Ok so I have managed to fix the flashing pixels on my Quest 2 unit and our own Unity built Immersive Media Player. I can only guess at the reason for the issue and I hope the fix works also works for others, and gives some insight for Meta Engineers. I have restarted my unit about a dozen times now and the fix seems to have stuck.

First I left the PTC V55 and returned to V54. Doing this factory reset my Quest, and I reinstalled my essential apps, including the OVR Metric Tool overlay I previously downloaded from over a year ago. When I retested our app the flashing pixels remained. However I noticed that the OVR Metrics Tool Overlay graph remained on even after a restart... therefore a restart was not affecting this app overlay. I remembered a problem a few years ago where the Metric tool overlay used to cause rendering artifacts on our VR video playback if it was on while the video played - simply turning it of fixed it back then. I decided to update to the OVR Metrics Tool to the Latest (1.6.5 - May 2023). After doing this the flashing pixels on our video app has stopped.

I don't know if this will work for games or VD/ Link, as some people may not even have the OVR Metrics Overlay installed... but if you have an old version installed on your device I recommend uninstalling it and updating to the new one (and restarting). The logic I'm putting on it is that an older version of the Overlay tool is interfering with the rendering, and even if you disable the overly it will continue to interfere (as it is proven to be still running in the background - as the overlay graph remains ON if you restart with it still ON).

I hope this can help some of you get rid of the flashing pixel problem at least.

I just tried this method and really hoped it would help. But no miracle happened, the artifacts on V54 are even more noticeable than on V55 PTC. So I will continue to wait for the update. I hope that the problem with Flashing pixels/white sparkles will be fixed as soon as possible.

OK I am now also getting the random sprinkling of white pixels on both native Q2 games and PCVR.
Never had it before until V55.
It is actually pretty bad especially in dark scenes while moving.  I tried to record in the Q2 video of game play but alas the recorded video does not show the random sprinkling of pixels!

OK Meta developers.  The random flashing pixels that appear in kind of bands mostly on the right side, though I can see them all over but they are predominantly on the right side, I believe are rendering issues and the GPU.  I can recreate them in specific areas of a game consistently.  Not the random pixels consistently but in an area of a game where they will always show up..  For instance, walking from a hallway into a open room.  I can get in a spot that when I move forward, they will always happen every time.  Knowing what I know this is a rendering issue.
Now that I know I can find them in a game at specific spots where I can test, feel free to contact me and I can test anything you need to track this down.
Yes this is a issue and it can be quite annoying.  So I can see  what people are complaining about.  I never had this before ever until V54/55....  I will do anything you need me to test including a factory reset if you need.

I had the same exact issues. Do a factory restore by holding the power button and minus button. After the welcome prompt for me anyways there was a help tutorial service that didn't initiate correctly. It asked me to cancel or wait (Same as when a android service doesn't respond on a phone) I selected wait and after a while everything was great again. White pixel is the right lense gone as well as having no more wifi cutouts.

In all fairness to the complainers and maybe you are not reading, both v54 and v55 have major issues. So even on public release, its a test version. I understand reading posts about people b1tching about testing in the PTC, which i dont like to see either, but everything is a test channel now. we need new features to slow, and fix features to speed up.

PSA:    I had huge wifi cutouts along with white pixels in the right lens.  I did a full factory reset by holding the power and minus buttons.  When it first booted up and after the wlecome prompts. I saw a service that was a help tutorial service that wasn't starting. It asked me to either cancel or wait. I decided to wait. Theory is that the software is trying to start and not being initiated causing the wifi cutouts.  Anyways it worked and I no longer suffer from white pixels nor wifi cutouts. Hopefully this helps others. Also opting out or into PTC isn't the same as a factory reset. Just try it and report. I'm not saying it will fix every ones but it worked for me.

Ok, now restart your headset and confirm that wifi and pixel issues are still gone.

I'll do that tonight. I'm assuming they come back then. Should I restart or just the normal power off which I do. I'll do both for testing reasons. If it comes back then I'll factory restore again as at least I can go through a hoop and play VR for hours. Better than not playing at all.  When you did it did you get a help tutorial services  that wasn't stating.  I selected wait if that helps.

I'll tell you why there are more bugs in the software than ever ! That is because Meta are cheap and lazy ! They have got over worked Dev's trying to code for 3 different devices (Q2 Pro & Q3) all into the same software instead of having 3 separate development steams with a single core software. This is why someone just found a full demo setup for Q3 room mapping in v55 installed on a Q2 which doesn't even have the hardware needed for this code to work ! I would like to bet that all the current issues people are having are due to code for the Q3 not being fully compatible with the Q2 & Pro's hardware, don't forget the Q3 is meant to have the next gen hardware!

Hi everyone. from my last report on Monday to today everything is still fine, indeed perfectly.
I'm at 48h of mixed use between pcvr VD / AL gaming and standlone without a single white pixel or stutter.
All without having done any factory reset as already mentioned.

This obviously doesn't absolutely question the reports of those who still experience problems, but I would be inconsistent if I didn't say that in my case v55 is currently working great in terms of performance, image cleaning and connectivity.

Notwithstanding the above, a new report:
It happened to me a couple of times and never happened with previous firmware:
is to get stuck in home (standalone) after closing sideloaded 2d apps.
the teleportation points disappear, the home button no longer opens the menu, the screen slowly darkens (gradually until it is totally dark), it brightens and all this in a continuous loop.
The only way to fix it is to restart the device.
Following the restart, I reopen the 2d apps, use them, close and the problem no longer occurs. seems to only happen on first launch and exit of newly installed apps.

I have experienced this since V53.  Doesn't happen all the time and doesn't bother me all that bad.  But yes it still exists in V55

I had high hopes that my Logithec MX keyboard would switch to French QWERTY Keyboard in the Quest... But no, the keyboard is displayed with US QWERTY keys, even though I've selected the European model. In short, my Quest Pro is still effectively unusable for professional uses requiring text input.

I would love to hear how you're using your Quest Pro for productivity with a keyboard! (off topic I know, do we have DM's on here?)

I do work in Workrooms every day, but it seems like "mouse + keyboard" support in the headset itself is useless. Maybe if I 100% worked in Google Docs it might be good? But as an engineer, I bought a logitech keyboard and I tried to use it and the "windows" key is mapped to "Oculus button" and that alone ruins me as I can't do any key commands that use the windows key when connected to an app...

I tried:
Immersed (too messy)
Workrooms (pretty great now, but since I'm connected to my computer I just use THAT keyboard which unfortunately isn't rendered in VR)
Virtual Desktop (windows key opens oculus menu which I mentioned above)
Remote Desktop (works great an I love being in Oculus OS but again, I'm using my PC's keyboard here)

So I honestly can't wrap my head around WHO is using mouse/keyboard and WHY (unless Meta is just keeping software from me). Inspire me?

Totally not the place to post this.  This area is to post testing comments on V55.
