Quest 3 controllers rotate inverted on Steam

I get this on a lot of games playing with a Quest 3 via PCVR on Steam where your perspective rotation is inverted (wired or not there is no differance). When using the right joystick when I go to turn/look left in game it looks right and vice versa I turn/look right and it looks left. In games like Half-life Alyx I just remap it and there are no issues. But in so many other titles it is simply not an option which stops me from enjoying a lot of games I want to play (Skyrim VR, Metro Awakening...again on Steam..., etc etc). Is there any fix for this be via the meta app? I have tried DLing countless Steam controller profiles to no avail.

The issue has already been solved 😁. It was simply a calibration issue.

  • I have no such issue in Half Life Alyx using my Quest 3, the default controls are perfect using SteamLink, with the Meta Quest Link set as the default OpenXR.

    To do this:

    • Open the link app on the PC.
    • If it asks you, select Meta Quest Link as the default Open XR runtime
    • Now fully shut down the Link PC app from the taskbar icon.
    • Now connect your headset to your PC using SteamLink.
    • Open SteamVR, and when it asks if you want to set SteamVR as your default Open XR runtime, choose NOT TO.
    • Run Alyx and it should run great.

I don't have any controller issues with Skyrim VR either, but I forget whether I used AirLink or SteamLink or VirtualDesktop to play it 🤷‍♂️.

I can't use Steam link most of the time. It makes me sick, stutters or in most cases both...even with wifi 6 on a 5ghz channel on 2gbps+ link.

I have to wire in using the quest's native PCVR's remote desktop (though same inverted rotation happens with Steam link)  if I really want to enjoy a game on PC for more than 20 minutes.

I already set openxr as my runtime during my trouble shooting process but I'll double check the meta app in case something defaulted in my testing. Thank you for the reply. I'll update you tomorrow on my progress as I just laid down for the night.

If using SteamLink, make sure the Meta Quest Link app on your PC is not running, as it can conflict. Also, it's best to disable OpenXR and any other alternative XR runtimes you may have (I have a Vive Cosmos, for example, so I have to disable the Vive console). Also, decrease the SteamVR render resolution. If you can then get your game to run smoothly, you can increase the render resolution gradually until you get the best balance.

  • I found a fix finally. Apparently the controller was calibrated incorrectly by 120 degrees. Once I re-calibrated it works great now. Thanks for the idea's and help.

  • Most often, this inverted joystick issue occurs because SteamVR or the game is not reading the Quest 3 controller orientation correctly. I think the only reliable solution is to use a custom SteamVR controller binding. Because it globally inverts the joystick input for the corresponding games.
