Battery life and replacement

Hello, I think I overused my quest 2 the last year 😛
Battery life is less than an hour for me already, is it possible to replace it?

Thanks!

  • Hey there!

Not to worry, we can look into this for you.

    • Using cables and adapters other than the official charger can damage the battery slowly over time.
      • This is due to different chargers having different voltages and amperages.

    • Leaving the headset plugged in for days or weeks at a time can damage the battery over time, especially if the headset is on, or asleep rather than turned off.

If this sounds like your situation, don't fret we can troubleshoot your battery and potentially replace if necessary.

Let's start with the first couple ones and go from there:

    1. Attempt to charge the headset for 2 hours.
    2. Try a different Cable/Charger if possible.

Let us know if these two are unsuccessful, and we can continue!

Thanks for quick reply! I have been using the original link cable, elite strap and charger only, may be that I've played some long sessions connected to the computer?

I realised that it actually charges to 95%, but it discharges to 80 in just a couple minutes and then keeps discharging at a really quick rate by just being in the quest home.

I'm gonna try to leave it plugged for a couple of hours tomorrow and come back to you if that didn't worked.

      Thanks!

We are having the same issue with our Oculus. We have had it for almost 2 years. We use the original cord to charge and shut down completely when charging. We used to be able to play 2 full games of walkabout mini golf with 3 players but it shuts down after about 1 1/2 now.  Is there anyway to replace the batteries in these things??

Hey there! Devilin83! Unfortunately, support wouldn't be able to issue a replacement for a lost item, as it would violate the warranty guidelines. I would be happy to provide you with this link to the store page so you can see about getting another charger!

  • No luck, I tried to charge it for 2 hours and it fully charges and all, but it lost short of 20% in 15 minutes in workrooms.

So I have a couple of questions.

What would be the next steps to send the headset for repair?
How much would it cost if a replacement needs to be done?
If possible what would be the approx ETA from spain? (I use them for work)

    Thanks!

That happened to mine but rather than sending it in, I am techy so decided to replace the internal battery myself.  I do not recommend it if you are not good with tools.  My video for how to do it is on youtube.

  • OK, I think I got to the right spot. Can the battery be replaced in the oculus? I can only play 1 1/2 games of walkabout mini golf before it dies. Yesterday I noticed that after I got the first warning that the battery is low the second warning of "very low" came within a few minutes and shut off almost immediately. Whereas normally I will get the first warning and then have 10-15 min. before the second warning and then shut down.

We were not shutting the thing down the first year we had it not realizing we needed to. This past year we have shut it down completely when charging or not playing but the battery just is not the same. It looks like it still charges to 100%.

Hey there, ssshouston. We just wanted to check in since we haven't heard back from you yet. If you'd still like help with this just let us know, we'd be glad to help out!

  • Unfortunately, the warranty would not be able to cover any items that are lost. I would be happy to provide you with this link, which further explains the warranty guidelines, as well as the section which explains what the warranty is not able to cover here. You would need to see about purchasing a replacement charger instead.

I had same issue, I bought an extender off Amazon for less than $40 and it is great

  • The advise that was given to u was true but its also doesn't mean it's the only thing u can do.

1st when it comes to the charger and cord, while voltages and amp/watts vary with charges, the voltage will 99% be the same. It's the amps/wattage you really need to keep an eye on. For example, don't ever use Samsung super fast chargers with the quest. The wattage is to much and the heat builds up at the weakest connection point which usually the plug port.

When it cones to the charging cord itself and not the plug, u most certainly can use an aftermarket, infact some are even better than the manufacturer cords. As long as the ohms (resistance) is the the same as the manufacturers and your using the correct voltage charger, than the load (amps/watts) will not be effected. If the ohms is higher on the aftermarket cord than the load will go up which causes excessive heat. Will cause the charger port on the headset to get real hot, will damage the connection points which in affect causes more heat from not having a solid stable connection. Everytime the plug and port is connected and the plug moves, it can cause tiny arcs like if u unplug a vacuum while it's on u can see the arc from the contact points separating. Those arc cause heat and the more heat in the headset the higher the load can get. It's a chain reaction that becomes a loop if prob. If u do this so many times. Even with a brand new, the ports connecting points rot away.  (Had this prob with my phone. I changed the port because my phone wouldn't charge and I was shocked how bad it really was).

     (bad port) top (good. New)bottom

the black tips are to protect the medal on the new. Afterwards my phones charge lasted so much longer and charged in half the time. Using a super fast charger speeded up the process of damage to the og.

Solution to this is u need to get a good look at ur charging port to make sure the connection points are still solid copper with 0 gaps or scratches that chipped the copper. Doesn't matter if u have a new cord or not. If any copper removed from where the plugs pins contact the port in the headset will have more resistance for the electric to travel and cause more ams/watts which generates more heat which casue the amps/watts to go up more, causing more heat and so on. All this leads up to the damage it cause to the battery.  Took a long time to get here but I wanted to stress that u can use aftermarket cords as long ad the specs are the same and if u do use aftermarket, it's better to get one with thicker insulation to prevent the cable from damage cause damage cable dies the same thing I just explained. Weak points, loose connection cause extra heat and higher loads.

CONCLUSION: Your prob does sound like it could be a your battery cells aren't holding the charge but it could be from what I was talking about. If ur port is in bad shape/charging cords pins bent or no tension will heat the headset up and the quest has overload protection so it doesn't keep charging when it's full do it doesn't overcharge the battery.  This also detects the heat so it could be giving headset a false full charge reading and it stops charging at 95%. If ur battery drops to 80% that fast than the cells can't handle the load the headset is calling for to operate it.

My last suggestion is the most important I tell everyone because we all do it and thats most likely the number 1 issue that kills the batteries life, STOP PLAYING when it's at or below 20Ùª When it gets that low, the battery can't handle the heat and the high load its using and thats why it dies so fast when it gets that low. And the worst thing u can do is keep playing and having it charge if it drops lower than 20%. If it gets to 15% and ur charging while playing will cause double the heat than if it's at 20% (which is also making unwanted extra heat). At that point its only a matter of time till u notice ur battery isn't giving u what it did when new.

    -Future solution preventing battery damage;

    1. Restrict cable movements when charging and playing

    2. Useba charging cord with same ohms A original cord or what the specs call for. Quest 2 charger is 5volts & 2amps. R=E÷I R(ohms), E(volts), I(amps) so 5v-2a=2.5Ω. U want ur cord to be 2.5 ohms. No more no less. Either one will change the voltage or amps.

    3. Don't play the vr under 20% and def don't charge it while playing, especially at 15% or more. And don't use super fast charging.

Everything I mentioned here can be verified. I've been an electrician for 24 yrs now and I also do alot of work on electronics as a hobby so my advise is from experience and actual real life experience. Hope this info helps u or anyone else reading it.

Sound advice. I've been trying to keep my battery charge between 80 and 20% and not play while charging. Lately I've gotten bad about that.

The Quest 2 gives a low battery warning at around 16% or less. I've suggested to Meta that the warning be set to 20% or they give as a HUD overly showing the battery level like the HUD overlay in Move. No action on Meta's side. I guess Meta would rather make money off repair/replacements that could have been postponed and lowering the customers satisfaction.

I've had my quest 2 for a decent amount of time (probably like 4 years), but I've barely used it more than like 35 hours in total. I decided to give it a shot again recently to play contractors showdown, it lasts for less than an hour before hitting 16% battery life. Is this normal? I remember when I used to play Onward it used to work for close to 2 hours before getting low battery. Before I started using it again, I left it fully charged almost, but when I went to use it again after not playing it for over a year, it was at like 40% charge. Is this just the battery degrading over time? Is there anyway to fix this? Or do I need to get the battery replaced. I was considering getting a Quest 2 elite headset with a battery, but I've also seen some reviews saying they don't work for long or they break. (Also not sure if this would do anything if its just that the battery has degraded) So I'm trying to decide on what to do. Any help would be appreciated.
